2 Building a Community Partnership between Clinicians and Schools In 2015, AAAAI led an initiative with NASN to develop national recommendations for school based asthma care (SAMPRO TM) Wide endorsement (AAP, ATS, ACAAI, NASN among others) Whitepaper published in the September issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Whitepaper and toolkit are available at US Congressional Bipartisan support (Bill 4662)

3 SAMPRO TM : The Four Components 1. Establishing a Circle of Support 2. Developing and sharing standardized Asthma Management Plan with schools 3. Developing comprehensive asthma education plans for patients and all school personnel 4. Empowering schools to employ environmental assessment strategies to reduce asthma triggers

4 Establishing the Circle of Support Each member of the Circle of Support plays an important role in managing a child s asthma care. Important that the Circle of Support was broadly supported by NASN and medical professional organizations (AAAAI, ATS, AAFP, AAP, CDC, EPA, ALA) Advocacy groups (AAFA, NAACP) were invited to participate in 2015 summit meeting and draft of the whitepaper Checklists to standardize care are available via the toolkit

5 Component 2: Developing and sharing Standardized Asthma Management Plans with schools

6 The SAMPRO AAP SAMPRO developed an AAP with key features including asthma severity, asthma medications to be given at school and associated authorizations. All forms are available in English and Spanish. SAMPRO has also developed a supplementary school treatment form to be used along with an asthma action plan if needed Available for download within our toolkit in editable and noneditable pdf forms

15 The Roe-Hoyer Bill In March 2016, Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and Rep. Phil Roe, MD (R-TN) introduced the School-based Asthma Management Program Act (HR4662). This legislation will help ensure that students with asthma have assistance at school with managing their chronic disease and can excel in an asthma-friendly environment
