Vocal Care & Hygiene

Your instrument the vocal cords / folds

Vocal cords so what are they all about? (1) S oft tissue not muscle! Composed C of twin in- foldings of mucous membrane stretched horizontally across the larynx (voice box) A dult males mm A dult females mm Controlled by the inner muscles of the larynx, surrounded by the outer muscles (used for swallowing)

Vocal cords so what are they all about? (2) They vibrate, modulating the flow of air being expelled from the lungs during phonation (sound production by vocal apparatus) Person's voice pitch is determined by the resonant frequency at which the vocal cords vibrate Adult males ~ 125 Hz, Adult females ~ 210 Hz Children > 300 Hz

Problems (1) Vocal C ord Nodules Like a callous S ymptoms: hoarseness, breathiness, a rough or scratchy voice, decreased pitch range, voice and body fatigue.

Problems (2) Vocal Cord C Polyps Like a blister S ymptoms: similar to Nodules

Problems (3) R einke s Edema S moke-induced swelling with excess fluid in the baggy mucosal layer S ymptoms: similar to Nodules

Problems (4) Causes? AB US E & MIS US E Allergies S moking Type A personality (person who is often tense or anxious) S inging / talking Whispering / throat clearing Drinking caffeine & alcohol dry out the throat and vocal folds Vocal Nodules occur more frequently in women between the ages of 20 and 50

Problems (5) Reflux Gastric juices irritate folds and surrounding tissues S ymptoms: similar to Nodules loss of voice

Do s & don ts (1) A void drying irritants Caffeine Chocolate Alcohol Antihistamines Diuretics Cocaine Vitamin C especially in large doses Cigarette smoke

Do s & don ts (2) A void mucous-inducing irritants Nuts Dairy products A llergens (dust, pollen, pet dander, etc.) Pollutants Clear throat by deep-breathing in over your cords or yawning to break throat tension

Do s & don ts (3) Drink LOTS of water 6 to 8 glasses a day as vocal cords need moisture to work effectively Avoid brown drinks (coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cola, root-beer, etc.) contain caffeine. However, even some non-brown drinks contain caffeine, e.g. green tea Food to avoid S picy food Fad diets Tomatoes!

Do s & don ts (4) B eware of certain environments! Noisy S mokey Outdoors Cold Dry Dusty Industrial

Remedies (1) Drink LOTS of water need to re-hydrate your voice Work in a humidified environment Inhale steam Inhale steam Portable steam inhalers Old technique still works well: boil a pot of water on the stove, once boiling remove the pot from the stove top, place your head over the steam, place a towel over your head and the pot and breathe deeply

Remedies (2) Do NOT use a throat-spray to stop the pain as it numbs the feeling, thereby allowing you to reap more damage Lozenges Lozenges Fisherman s Friends Meloids (no longer available) Larydol (homeopathic) Zinc lozenges (put under tongue for sore throat) Red Indians Ginseng throat drops Avoid lozenges containing decongestants (menthol) or analgesics (painkillers)

Remedies (3) Teas & drinks (just make you feel better) Hot water & lemon (clears mucous) Herbal Teas Ginger & Ginger Tea Pure Ginseng Tea B e quiet!

Techniques for singing better (1) B reathing / singing from your stomach, i.e. like squeezing toothpaste from the bottom of the tube Takes strain off vocal cords Expanding your diaphragm S tomach muscles should hurt after singing

Techniques for singing better (2) Reciting AUM Early in the morning For as low, long & loudly as possible Getting progress sively lower, longer & louder

Techniques for singing better (3) S peech Level S inging, the correct way to sing Developed by S eth Riggs (famous vocal coach) for Grammy award winners like Michael Jackson, Madonna, etc. Controls the inner muscles of the larynx by disengaging the muscles located outside the larynx Refers to head and chest registers, i.e. where the sound most generally resonates, having different tonal qualities Allows the singer to bridge between registers, avoiding tension and therefore cracking If you want to know more then check out:
