What questions do you bring today? What would energize you in thinking about this topic?

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeing new lands, but in seeing with new eyes. Proust

There cannot be true peace if everyone is his own criterion, if everyone can always claim exclusively his own rights, without at the same time caring for the good of others, of everyone, on the basis of the nature that unites every human being on this earth." Pope Francis

We will all grow old. Mental illness indirectly affects all Canadians at some time through a family member, friend or colleague.. 20% of Canadians will personally experience a mental illness in their lifetime. ( Canadian Mental Health Association)

Something that detracts from the character or reputation of a person or a group A mark that something is not considered normal or standard

Words that we use Lunatic Deranged Demon possessed Insane Crazy Weird Nuts

Bleeding bad blood Locking them up Submerging them in ice baths Putting them in restraints Giving them shock therapy Performing lobotomy Isolating in solitary confinement

What is the experience of mental illness? People are more than their illness whether that is cancer, heart disease, diabetes or mental illness.

Schizophrenia Bi-polar Depression Schizoaffective PTSD Personality disorders

Facts In Canada Approximately 8% of adults will experience a major depression sometime in their lives; 1% bipolar illness. Anxiety disorders affect 5% of population. Schizophrenia affects 1%. Suicide accounts for 24% of all deaths among year old and 16% among year olds.

Currently 35% of 13,300 inmates prisons have a mental illness 3x as many as in 2004 and this is higher than the incidence of mental illness in the general population. If you are severely mentally ill odds are you will be in a prison bed, not a state psychiatric bed.

77% of population claims to have an affiliation with a Christian community 16% claim no religious affiliation 80,000 are members of a Native American tribe

Within our organizations. If a person is diagnosed with cancer, diabetes, has a heart attack, what is the response of the organization? If a person is diagnosed with depression, bipolar illness, what is the response of the organization?

In 1998, cost of mental illnesses was estimated to be 7.9 billion dollars- 4.7 billion in care and 3.2 billion in disability and early death. An additional 6.3 billion was spent on uninsured mental health services and time off for depression and distress not treated by the system.

Youth Canada s youth suicide rates third highest in the industrialized world. Mental disorders in youth ranked as second highest hospital care. 1 out of 5 children who need mental health services receive them.

The spirit of the Lord has been given to me He has sent me to bring good news to the poor To proclaim liberty to captives To set the downtrodden free

Sense of isolation Hopelessness Stigma Poor self-esteem Loss of meaning and purpose Affects work, relationships Cost to society

In experience of isolation. create community In face of hopelessness. offer hope In face of stigma, shame offer acceptance In face of poor self-esteem offer self-worth In face of loss of meaning offer meaning, purpose

To act justly To love tenderly To walk humbly with your God

Roman Catholic - moral test of any society is how it treats its most vulnerable members.

Change our language Work toward the destigmatization of those who live with mental illness Examine policies within the organization. Work with other organizations

How does your faith community reach out to, include in ministry, visit in hospitals or prisons those who suffer with mental illness or their families? If your religious community has a peace and justice group, to what extent does it address the justice/injustice of those who suffer with mental illness? What does your organization do to attend to the mental health needs of the staff?
