Department Overview Sociology and anthropology are complementary approaches to the study of society and culture. While sociologists usually study modern urban industrial societies, anthropologists take a broader perspective by focusing on non-industrial as well as fully industrialized cultures. Sociology is the scientific study of the processes and patterns of individual and group interaction, of the fms of social ganization, and of the influence of group pressures upon individual behavi. Opptunities are available f the application of sociological knowledge and the use of critical thinking to clarify social problems and evaluate policies of public and private agencies, particularly by field experiences in such areas as industrial ganizations, social change, intergroup relations, criminal justice, and social welfare. Anthropology is the scientific study of human life and culture, past and present. It is concerned with human biological and cultural adaptations to physical and social environment throughout time and in all parts of the wld. The basic themes of anthropology include adaptation, evolution, and change. Opptunities exist to apply anthropological knowledge to many problems of modern society, including the social impact of development, economic and political change, and cultural resource management. The sociology maj offers a breadth of exposure to subject matter in both sociology and anthropology, with grounding in the theies and methods of these disciplines. The curriculum includes an understanding of theies and methods used by sociologists and anthropologists, as well as substantive areas to which these theies and methods are applied. The student interested in studying and wking in such areas as social change, cultural resource management, museum wk, and fensic science may elect a fmal concentration in anthropology. Preparation f Graduate School Students who graduate with a bachels degree in sociology are qualified to enter graduate and professional programs in many fields such as public administration and social service administration. Those opting f the anthropology concentration are likewise qualified to enter a variety of fields, including histic preservation, cultural resource management, fensic anthropology, museum studies, global studies, and international development. Requirements f the Sociology Maj In der to be accepted as a maj in sociology, a student must have a 2.25 GPA overall, have demonstrated writing competency by completing ENGL 201 ENGL 202 with a grade of C better, and must have completed SOCA A maj in sociology consists of a minimum of 35 credits. At least 15 credits of upper-level courses in the maj must be completed at UW- Parkside. Under consultation with a faculty member, an advanced student may opt to design his/her own course as an independent study in sociology/anthropology. The student must wk with a faculty member whose expertise is in the selected topic. Together, they negotiate the focus and content of the course, materials to be examined, and so fth. The following ce courses, to be completed by the end of the juni year pri to the completion of 90 credit hours of study, are required of all students majing in sociology:

The concentration emphasizes the comparative study of society and culture. It uses a variety of analytical approaches to study human evolution, the ganization of traditional societies and cultures, and change in contempary societies and cultures. Students are required to gain first-hand exposure to &

The anthropology fieldwk requirement may be met by wking on a faculty research project by carrying out an independent research internship project. The following requirements are to be met.
