2 Introduction Information provision has been found to help patients with cancer: with decision making cope with the adverse effects of cancer treatment reduce anxiety and depression increase satisfaction with treatment improve communication with family improve the quality of life be an active partner in their care 2
3 Aim & Method 3 Aim: Instrument: To determine the information sources and the preferred information sources and Online information seeking behaviour of cancer patients in order to guide practice A self-administered questionnaire (Pilot tested on 11 patients) Sampling: Convenience sampling over a 5-month period from Site: Inclusion Criteria: Ethical Consideration: A large ambulatory cancer centre in Singapore Diagnosed with cancer and receiving treatment Not cognitively impaired Able to understand and communicate in English/ Mandarin 21 years and above Approved by the Centralized Institutional Review Board of the Singapore Health Services Written informed consent was obtained from all respondents

9 Results Physicians, healthcare specialists and written information materials were the main sources and most preferred sources for cancer information 59.1% of the respondents used the internet to search on cancer related information, namely diagnosis and treatment options, side effects of treatment, and complementary and alternative therapy; demonstrating the importance of the above information Younger and more educated were statistically significantly associated with online information search Female patients are more likely to go online to search for cancer information 9
10 Practice Implications Develop a tailored individualized information treatment toolkit Enhance information delivery through the Institution s website Provide patients a list of trusted information sources that match their information needs Establish guidelines on how to evaluate health information on the internet Continuous evaluation to ensure that information and mode of delivery best match patients needs 10
