The Oncology Global Medical Affairs (GMA) group supports this overarching mission and goals and is responsible for all medical aspects of the Global Oncology business. Richard Nieman, MD, Head of the GMA Organization, confirmed that building the Oncology GMA group has a been a top priority. We have focused a lot of energy in putting together a high-performing team to support the Global Oncology group and are now ready to support the global launch of Nexavar HCC and other medical activities worldwide. The U.S. Oncology group is responsible for the marketing and communication of cancer products in the United States, which includes everything from understanding patient needs and market demands to training, product development and maximizing product value for patients. According to Craig Philips, head of the U.S. Oncology group, We work collaboratively with the Global Oncology and Global Medical Affairs groups to facilitate viable and appropriate lifecycle management for each product and ensure the organization is communicating key therapeutic product benefits to the medical community and patients. The contest and survey included in the last two issues of IntegrationDynamics provided employees with an opportunity to win prizes and, additionally, offer feedback on the newsletter. While the contest winners have been featured in subsequent issues, we also wanted to give a quick recap of the survey responses from the hundreds of employees who responded. IntegrationDynamics was created to deliver news about the integration of the Berlex and Bayer organizations. It was designed to be the U.S. source for the driving force. Results: Overall more than 80 percent of survey participants said they read every issue of Nexavar becomes first and only approved treatment of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Europe Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals and Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. recently announced that the European Commission has granted marketing authorization to Nexavar (sorafenib) tablets for the treatment of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common form of liver cancer. Nexavar, an oral anticancer drug, is the first approved systemic therapy for HCC and the only one shown to significantly improve overall survival in patients with the disease. Additional regulatory filings for HCC are under review in countries around the world including the United States and, most recently, Japan. Nexavar is currently approved in more than 60 countries for the treatment of patients with advanced kidney cancer. There were many other good ideas and thoughts for ensuring that the newsletter continues to focus on providing valuable and useful integration information, which is our primary goal. There s a collective feeling that we re contributing to the development and growth of drugs that have great potential for the medical community and patients with life-threatening diseases. Craig adds that much of the Oncology group s success is the result of extensive internal communications and discussion within BSP and with the U.S. Commercial partner Onyx. We maximize opportunities for collaboration, he says. There s involvement from all parties on how to effectively communicate at the brand level to best promote our products. We operate on the same guiding values and fundamental principles, says Craig. We all have the same endpoint, we just play different roles in getting there. But, at the end of the day, it s about meeting patient needs and enhancing patient outcomes. This past June, BSP received much recognition when it showcased its expanded oncology portfolio at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and when a Nexavar trial was selected for the main plenary session based on its breakthrough success in treating patients with liver cancer (HCC SHARP F study). Bayer and Onyx had a terrific showing at ASCO scientifically, organizationally and commercially, said Paolo. It was a great example of the collaboration, expertise and commitment that is apparent throughout our oncology organizations.
