1 Updates on the New Chinese Hospital Project Major construction activity of the new hospital project now centers on excavation for the new hospital s basement. This fall, we will be laying the rebar and pouring the basement concrete slab, which will serve as the foundation for the new hospital building. Once the slab cures, a large tower crane will be brought to the site to erect the steel beams for the new hospital. The steel frame and floor decking will be installed floor-by-floor, and by late spring 2014, the new hospital building will be visible from the street! By now, many people know that Covered California is the state s health insurance marketplace where residents can buy quality, affordable coverage. For more information, be sure to contact CCHP Member Services at Importance of Breast Cancer Screening for Women Did you know that breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in women? A woman living in the U.S. has a 12.3% chance risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer.. Some of the things can increase a women s risk for breast cancer include: Family history of breast cancer Age over 50 years old Having a first child at an older age Hormone therapy for menopause Alcohol use Obesity Most women do not show symptoms for early detection to occur. For example, some lumps may be too small to feel during a self-examination of the breasts. This is why getting regular mammograms can help find problems early, increasing the chances of successful treatment. Women years of age should have at least one check-up every 2 years. 3 How to Use the Preventive Care Passport Preventive screenings are an important part of staying healthy and well. Keeping up all your preventive screenings is one of the best ways to identify and treat potential health problems before they worsen. The new CCHP Preventive Care Passport is enclosed in this newsletter to help members record screenings and tests for future reference. Chinese Community Health Plan uses the latest preventive screening recommendations released by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and put them into a user-friendly chart format for our members. To use the chart, find your age range in the Passport, then read down that column to see which services or screenings you should complete. 4 Chinese Medicine and PMS Do you or anyone you know suffer from PMS? What is PMS? PMS stands for Premenstrual Syndrome. Some women suffer from PMS for one to two weeks before the menstrual period begins. It is believed that PMS is caused by a combination of hormonal changes, genetics, nutrition and psychological factors. PMS symptoms can be physical, mental and emotional. Physical symptoms can include cramps, breast tenderness, bloating, water retention, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, headache, lower back pain, joint pain, muscle ache, and acne. Mental and emotional symptoms include poor concentration, poor memory, irritability, mood swings, anxiety, depression, feeling anger and frustration, and having difficulty sleeping. Each woman may have different symptoms, and symptoms can also vary from one cycle to the next. What can I do to cope with PMS? From the Chinese Medicine perspective, PMS arises from disharmony in the body. Acupuncture treatments and herbal medicine can help relieve PMS symptoms effectively. Ongoing weekly acupuncture and daily herbal therapy can help your body to regain its natural balance and relieve or prevent PMS symptoms from reoccurring. Diet changes can also help with PMS symptoms. For example, eating more complex carbohydrates, like whole grains and vegetables, may increase levels of serotonin and help stabilize mood. It may also help to reduce simple carbohydrates, like sugary snacks and processed white bread. Simple carbohydrates can cause blood sugar levels to fluctuate, which may make PMS symptoms worse. It may also help to eat less spicy foods, strong spices, and stimulants like coffee and alcohol. Instead of coffee, try enjoying herbal teas such as chamomile or chrysanthemum. Although stress is not a cause of PMS, it can make PMS symptoms worse. Take special care to manage your stress by lessening work and social activity, doing gentle exercise like walking, tai chi or yoga, and making sure you get enough rest. 5 Vitamin D in the Winter It is important to maintain your Vitamin D level year-round! Vitamin D is beneficial in building and maintaining your bone density, strengthening your immune system to fight against colds and the flu, decreasing fatigue and muscle aches, and protecting you against conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Our skin produces Vitamin D from sun exposure. During the winter, we receive less sun exposure because daylight hours are shorter and we have less skin exposed to the sun in cold weather. A normal Vitamin D level is ng/ml. Many people living in the Bay Area have levels lower than this, especially in the winter. For everyone over 1 year old, you need at least 600 IU of Vitamin D daily. If your Vitamin D level is low, you will need more than the recommended dosage. Here are three tips to keep your Vitamin D level up this winter: Eat foods rich in Vitamin D these include egg yolk, seafood, mushrooms, and fortified dairy products, soy products (such as tofu), and cereals. Take a supplement daily with at least 600 IU of Vitamin D this can be a multivitamin or Calcium + Vitamin D pill. You can purchase this over the counter. Sun exposure on sunny days most people need about 15 minutes of sun exposure on their arms and legs when the sun is at the highest, typically between noon and 2pm. However, this amount of exposure alone is not adequate in the winter. Please keep this tip in mind for the summer months! Choosing what to eat and what to buy at the grocery store can make a difference in your health and the health of your family, especially during the holiday season. Here are some tips to help you keep a healthy diet: Eat a low fat snack such as fresh fruit before a holiday meal so you won t be tempted to overeat. Chew slowly and enjoy each bite of food, and you ll be less likely to go for seconds. Extend the time and frequency of your exercise routine to burn off the extra calories. Center your holiday get-togethers around friends and family instead of eating and drinking. Avoid crowded places to limit your exposure to secondhand smoke and germs. Don t mix alcohol with medication. Remember to bring enough medications and keep them in your carry-on luggage when you travel. Reduce last minute anxiety and stress by shopping early and making a list ahead of time. 6 Eat Well, Live Well Recipe Steamed Egg White, Soymilk and Tofu with Shrimp Makes 4 servings Ingredients: 8 oz. soft tofu, diced into small cubes 5 oz. egg white (about 4 large eggs) 8 oz. unsweetened soymilk ½ tsp. salt 8 shrimp, deveined and peeled but keep the tails 1/8 tsp. salt and dash of white pepper Sauce: 4 oz. organic chicken broth 2 tsp. cornstarch, mixed with 2 tbsp. water 1 tsp. low sodium soy sauce ½ tsp. sugar ½ tsp. sesame oil 1 tbsp. chopped scallion 1 egg white 4 ramekins Nutrition information per serving: Calories: 96 Total fat: 4 g (1 g saturated) Cholesterol: 18 mg Sodium: 569 mg Carbohydrates: 3 g Protein: 13 g Instructions: 1. Season shrimp with 1/8 tsp. salt & dash of white pepper, refrigerate for 10 minutes. 2. In a steamer pot, bring water to boil; steam tofu for 5 minutes over high heat, drain excess water. Set aside. 3. Divide tofu into 4 portions, and put on the bottom of each ramekin. 4. Mix egg white and soymilk with ½ tsp. salt. 5. Fill ramekin ¾ full of the mixture, using a spoon to remove the foam; cover with plastic wrap. Steam over high heat for 3 minutes, and then lower to medium heat for 4 more minutes until solid, remove from heat. 6. Meanwhile, heat 1 tbsp. oil, sauté shrimp until cooked through and pink in color. Arrange 2 shrimp on the top of each ramekin. 7. In a small pot, bring chicken broth, soy sauce, sugar to a boil, add cornstarch mix to thicken. Add sesame oil and scallion. Remove from heat, stir in egg white. Pour onto the steamed tofu.
