5 DIAGNOSIS If yur cat r dg is having difficulty breathing, this can be a life threatening emergency. It is imprtant t have yur cat seen by a veterinarian as sn as pssible. During the examinatin, the veterinarian will carefully bserve hw yur cat breathes, and will listen t its chest fr evidence f a heart murmur r fluid in the lungs. 13 What causes Hemlytic Anemia? AIHA may be primary r idipathic (e.g vaccine side effects), r it may be secndary. 18 Different Types f Anemia 1. Micrcytic (Irn Deficiency) Anemia: This is the mst cmmn type f anemia wrldwide. It is characterized by small, ften hypchrmic (pale), red bld cells in a peripheral bld smear. This type f anemia is mstly caused by an irn deficit; this deficit ccurs either because the bdy is nt getting enugh irn r it is nt absrbing it prperly. When puppies are very yung, they are prtected frm disease by ingesting their mther s first milk, called clstrum. This rich milk cntains maternal antibdies against disease, which the mther passes dwn t her puppies. The puppy s immune system is nt fully mature, r active until it is arund six mnths f age, s the maternal antibdies prvide passive immunity against the disease fr each puppy. When a puppy with a reasnable amunt f maternal antibdies is vaccinated, the maternal antibdies will essentially inactivate the vaccine, just as it wuld a real virus. By giving yur puppy a series f vaccinatins, nt nly are yu needlessly creating a greater txin lad and subsequent illness, yu are als expsing him t the envirnment in which he is mst likely t pick up Parv. Vanguard tested the Parvvirus respnse in their cmbinatin High Titer vaccine. They vaccinated puppies at 6 weeks, 9 weeks and 12 weeks f age and then measured their respnse t the vaccine by measuring their titers t Parvvirus. At 6 weeks, nly 52% f the puppies had sercnverted (develped an immune respnse). At 9 weeks, 88% f the puppies shwed a respnse t the vaccine. At 12 weeks, 100% f the puppies were prtected. The practice f vaccinating puppies at 6 t 8 weeks f age is a high-risk, lw-value prpsitin because the chances f the maternal antibdies blcking the vaccine are quite high, meaning yu are ptentially expsing yur puppy t Parv by taking him t the vet clinic, fr a limited chance f vaccine success. It wuld be a lt safer fr yur puppy if yu were t scialize him n the streets and keep him away frm the vet s ffice r dg park until he is ld enugh that yu knw the vaccine is likely t wrk. Vaccine failure can als result if the puppy is sick r stressed at the time f vaccinatin. Once again, it makes little sense t vaccinate a puppy at eight weeks f age. It is nrmally at this age when puppies are remved frm their dam and littermates, are thrwn int a different hme envirnment, a different rutine and fed different fds. The chances f the puppy being sick r stressed at this pint in his life are quite high, meaning that vaccine failure is mre likely t happen at this age. Vaccine failure can als happen in puppies with suppressed immune systems. This can ccur if yur puppy is n sterids r antibitics. Dewrming can als stress the yung puppy s immune system.
