3 YOUNG SURVIVORS GIVING HOPE $33,000 raised at inaugural event by Basser Young Leadership Council In 2014, Sean Sanchirico was diagnosed with an ependymoma, a rare brain tumor. He was treated by Penn neurosurgeon Donald M. O Rourke, MD, who after a grueling 8 hour surgery, was able to remove his entire tumor. Over the course of 30 rounds of proton radiation at Penn s Roberts Proton Center, and weeks of inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, his care team at Penn Medicine helped him regain his strength and obtain the confidence needed to fight through each day to get better and stronger. Sean recently ran in the National Brain Tumor s Race For Hope in Philadelphia, and played a round of golf at the Jay Sigel Invitational, a community event that over the course of 23 years has raised an astonishing $3.1 million for cancer research at the Abramson Cancer Center. 10 Awards given by Young Friends of the ACC My family at Penn Medicine taught me to be a fighter and how to believe in the path back to a healthy life! Sean Sanchirico, two years tumor free INVESTING IN YOUNG INNOVATORS Supporting junior investigators and clinicians today cultivates the medical leaders of tomorrow. The future of cancer research and care rests in the hands and minds of these brilliant faculty whose fresh and innovative ideas often go unrealized because of a lack in funding. The ACC s young volunteer groups programs create opportunities for learning and collaboration as well as a forum to discuss the challenges they face early in their careers.» 2016 Young Friends of the Abramson Cancer Center Recipient Ronac Mamtani, MD, MSCE, and Angela DeMichele, MD, MSCE Young faculty and investigators, graduates and post-graduates, and clinical fellows have the power to change the way we think about and treat cancer, but often lack the resources required to do it. As the recipient of the Carole P. and F. 4 BUILDING ON A LEGACY Round 2 of PHILLY FIGHTS CANCER 1,300 People attended Philly Fights Cancer Round 2 Philly Fights Cancer honored the legendary John H. Glick, MD, whose leadership single-handedly launched the Abramson Cancer Center to prominence and Sharyn Berman, a true champion, who knows the devastating effects of cancer all too well. Together, a tremendous $5.6 million was raised for clinical trials and translational research. The evening s celebratory atmosphere and spirit of generosity filled the air as guests were entertained by Lionel Richie, Jennifer Hudson, and comedienne and breast cancer survivor Tig Notaro.»John H. Glick, MD, with Nancy Wolfson»PFC Honoree Sharyn Berman, Madlyn Abramson, Amy Gutmann, PhD, Leonard Abramson, Kristy L. Weber, MD, and PFC Honoree John H. Glick, MD My parents helped to establish a place where people were cared for with humanity and passion and treated like an important member of the family. The outpouring of support for Philly Fights Cancer illustrates just how many people are part of our collective family. It was truly inspiring to see people from all generations get involved and give back to the fight to eradicate cancer. Nancy Wolfson COMMITTEE CHAIR OF PHILLY FIGHTS CANCER The MAKE THE BEST OF IT BASH Community events galvanize dedicated groups of supporters, champions, and advocates to raise critical cancer funding and awareness while honoring the journeys of loved ones who have faced cancer. And this is one inspiring example: Tara Miller lived her life by seeking out silver linings. And, if they weren t there, she created them. During her courageous battle with melanoma Tara created the Make the Best of It Bash and after her passing her family and supporters keep that legacy strong. The Miller Family and Tara Miller Melanoma Foundation s annual event provides a strong foundation and crucial seed funding for innovative melanoma research that brings hope for better ways to prevent and treat melanoma. In just 3 years, an incredible $1 Million has been raised for melanoma research.»» Lynn Schuchter, MD, and Tara Miller at The Abramson Cancer Center s 40th Anniversary Celebration Tara had a profound impact on my life, both as a person and a physician. Her lesson to make the best of any situation inspires me every day and will stay with me always. I am eternally grateful for the Miller family who took the tragic and untimely death of a loved one as a catalyst for action and hope. $1 Million raised to fund 11 projects over 3 years Lynn Schuchter, MD CHIEF, DIVISION OF HEMATOLOGY-ONCOLOGY C. WILLARD ROBINSON PROFESSOR OF HEMATOLOGY-ONCOLOGY PROGRAM LEADER, MELANOMA AND CUTANEOUS MALIGNANCIES PROGRAM The BREAKTHROUGH BIKE CHALLENGE» Team Mission Melanoma 2, Penn s top BBC fundraisers The Breakthrough Bike Challenge (BBC) brought together faculty and staff with patients, families, and friends to raise vital funds for early career physician-scientists through the Richard Buz Cooper Scholars program. More than a bike ride, the BBC is a movement to help find cures for cancer. Pedal towards cures with the Breakthrough Bike Challenge in the beautiful Oley Valley, PA! Sunday, September 17, 2017 I am honored and grateful to be a Richard Buz Cooper Scholar named in memory of the cancer center s second director and luminary figure in cancer care. Pursuing a career in medical research is a long journey, and awards like this are critical to my ability to focus on distinguishing deadly forms of prostate cancer from those that are indolent, and identifying innovative treatment strategies to end suffering from this disease. 5 The Translational Centers of Excellence Initiative has been a signature program of the Abramson Cancer Center for the past four years. The framework is a team approach with a clear goal in mind to bring discoveries to patients now. Chi V. Dang, MD, PhD JOHN H. GLICK, MD, ABRAMSON CANCER CENTER DIRECTOR S PROFESSOR DIRECTOR, ABRAMSON CANCER CENTER THE TRANSLATIONAL CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE INITIATIVE: THE VERY ESSENCE OF TEAM-BASED SCIENCE Personal philanthropy makes a substantial impact on the Translational Centers of Excellences efforts, allowing these teams to pilot studies, generate valid data, publish findings, and go on to obtain additional federal funding in order to take these promising results to the next level. 2-PREVENT TRANSLATIONAL CENTER OF EXCELLENCE Angela DeMichele, MD, MSCE 41 papers published The 2-PREVENT TCE addresses one of the greatest challenges in breast cancer treatment the high rate of relapse and late treatment effects among breast cancer survivors and aims to prevent recurrent breast cancer altogether. Researchers have identified dormant cells that remain in bone marrow after treatment in some women as a potential cause of recurrence. The TCE has taken this information and launched a first-in-kind clinical trial for high-risk women aimed at detecting and treating dormant cancer before it recurs. They are also testing both targeted drugs and novel immunotherapeutic vaccines to prevent recurrence in women who are at high-risk, including those with BRCA mutations. Lewis Chodosh, MD, PhD 9 Open Trials screening, treating, and following breast cancer patients and survivors The TCE s four premier programs execute a vision of better diagnoses and treatments:» SURMOUNT: a blood or bone marrow screening study that identifies markers that could potentially predict the patients at increased risk for recurrence who would benefit from additional targeted treatments.» METAMORPH: a study of recurrent, metastatic breast cancer patients whose blood, bone marrow, and tumor tissue were genetically profiled at Penn s Center for Personalized Diagnostics and matched with targeted therapies.» COMET: an education model for communicating risks, benefits, and utilities of genomic tumor profiling.» ACE: a study that documents breast cancer survivors post-treatment symptoms and concerns, quality of life, and health behaviors after receiving treatments. LUNG CANCER TRANSLATIONAL CENTER OF EXCELLENCE The Lung Cancer TCE focuses on offering better treatment options for people facing this difficult diagnosis. The TCE team was a very early believer in the promise of immunotherapy for lung cancer, predicting what has now become the standard of care for hard-to-treat lung cancers. In addition to helping people with lung cancer benefit from immunotherapy, the TCE team seeks both to understand why immunotherapy works better for some patients than others, and to explore other targeted approaches. The Lung Cancer TCE is at the forefront of expanding chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CART) therapy a personalized immunotherapy developed at the ACC to treat mesothelin expressing Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). This breakthrough therapy aims to give a patient s native immune system the lasting ability to fight their cancer. NSCLC patients are currently undergoing screening for the CART clinical trial, slated to begin early patients enrolled in several immunotherapy trials Steven Albelda, MD The Lung TCE has established project-based databases to track the response of patients to treatments, as well as acquired resistance to standard therapies and novel targeted immunotherapies. These databases will become the cornerstone of a permanent resource for future research endeavors involving thoracic malignancies. 17 papers published Corey Langer, MD

6 HEMATOLOGIC MALIGNANCIES TRANSLATIONAL CENTER OF EXCELLENCE Martin Carroll, MD 12 papers published The Hematologic Malignancies TCE builds on the recognition that the more we know about an individual s cancer, the more likely we are to treat it successfully. The main priority of the TCE is to analyze the genetics of the cancerous cells of all patients with leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma to ensure that each person receives the best treatment for their unique cancer. Members work with the Center for Personalized Diagnosis to streamline collection, analysis, and reporting of cancer patient samples. Built on a solid foundation of scientific and therapeutic discoveries in blood cancers, the TCE continues this legacy by offering patients the most advanced options in cancer care today. In a prime example of precision medicine allowing ongoing personalized care, the TCE is continuing to work to understand and target the FLT3 mutation in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). In an effort to determine which patients will respond best to FLT3 inhibitors, the TCE is studying other mutations in a patient s genetic make-up to better understand their impact on therapeutic response. Edward Stadtmauer, MD 5,000 samples from over2,500 patients banked Penn s Center for Personalized Diagnostics uncovers useful genetic information to personalize treatment plans so oncologist can identify drugs that have demonstrated success targeting their patient s particular genetic mutations. By integrating the CPD s next-generation, personalized molecular diagnostics into the TCEs, it has become a critical partner in directly accelerating the pace of discovery through a collaborative care system. PANCREATIC CANCER RESEARCH CENTER The Pancreatic Cancer TCE, which has evolved into a newly formed Pancreatic Cancer Research Center (PCRC), is answering the urgent call to establish new therapies for pancreatic cancer. With the goal of getting every pancreatic cancer patient on a clinical trial, the PCRC priorities are simple: capitalize on the multidisciplinary team s ability to work together, in real-time, to advance early detection and test new drugs in the lab and quickly deploy findings to the clinic. $942,594 raised in the TCE Matching Gift Campaign Accomplishments include: 25% of ACC s pancreatic cancer patients are on clinical trials compared to a national average of 4%. Opened a promising trial that found that supplementing standard treatment with high doses of vitamin D interfered with cancer cell growth in pancreatic cancer. Built a liquid biopsy to detect circulating tumor material in the blood. This non-invasive blood test will guide clinical decision-making, measure prognosis and response to treatment, and eventually provide early detection of pancreatic cancer. Using rapid assessment and navigation of newly diagnosed patients through medical intervention, surgical options, and/or enrollment into clinical trials, the PCRC is providing the immediate care so critical for pancreatic cancer patients. The PCRC s multidisciplinary team of medical oncologists, translational scientists, surgeons, gastroenterologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, and supportive services collaboratively brings discoveries from the lab to our patient s bedside. Peter O Dwyer, MD By 2020 pancreatic cancer will be the second leading cause of cancer death this emergent tide means that patients need options now. The Pancreatic Cancer Research Center is answering this urgent call by developing early detection methods, novel therapies, and clinical trials: giving hope to patients.
