3 Even though more people are getting cancer Fewer of them are dying from it! Cancer deaths are down 20% 1.2 million less deaths from cancer since 1991 That's more than 400 lives saved per day! What is Cancer? Bad cells that are growing out of control! Types of cancer are typically named for the organs or tissues where the cancers form. 3
4 Normal body cells grow, divide, and die in an orderly fashion. Cancer cells are damaged and do things they aren t supposed to do. Instead of dying, cancer cells make more and more bad cells, spread throughout the body and eventually take over. How do you get cancer cells? Body has trillion cells Not all of them will be perfect due to mistake or genetics Body s natural defenses rid body of imperfect cells When one or more of these imperfect cells aren t destroyed by body, they develop into cancer 4
5 Stages of Cancer Stage 0 In-situ In one tissue area Stage 1&2 Local Only in organ where started Stage 3 Regional Spread to surrounding tissues/nodes How bad the cancer is How far it s spread If it s in any organs Stage 4 Distal Spread to other organs/systems How does Cancer spread? Bloodstream and Lymph Nodes Metastasis 5
6 Cancer/Tumors A lump or bump is never normal; however, it s not always cancer! What should you do? Go to the doctor! Doctor will usually do a biopsy. Malignant tumors have cancer cells in them. Need to treat right away. Benign tumors are normal cells that forget to stop growing. Don t have to treat. Breast Cancer Second leading cause of cancer in women! 6
7 Breast Cancer 231,840 women and 2,350 men in the United States will be diagnosed this year Men have 1% chance usually a lump or rash that won t go away 40,290 women and 440 men will die from the disease this year Leading cause of cancer death for U.S. women between the ages of 20 and 59 In 1950, a woman had a 1-in-20 chance of developing breast cancer Today women have a 1-in-8 chance in US and 1-in-7 in Wisconsin How can you detect Breast Cancer? Self-Exams Mammogram Clinical Exam 7
8 Cervical Cancer 1 in 147 chance Symptoms: abnormal bleeding/discharge, something that s not quite right with normal cycle PAP test Age 21 or 3 years after sexually active Cervical cancer down 70% since PAP started 8
9 HPV Human papilloma virus #1 cause of cervical cancer Sexually transmitted virus Gardasil shots available to help prevent spread of virus Talk to parents/doctor to see if good choice for you Testicular Cancer 1 in 270 chance - Young man s disease age % treatable if detected early - 8,430 will be diagnosed this year and 380 will die 9
10 What s the most common type of cancer? Skin Cancer Skin Cancer Accounts for nearly half of all cancers in the United States More than 5 million spots diagnosed in this country this year 10

12 3 Types of Skin Cancer Melanoma is the deadliest because it spreads Types of Skin Cancer 5 million total cases of skin cancer this year Melanoma accounts for less than 5% of skin cancer cases but has the vast majority of deaths 12
13 Skin Cancer is like an iceberg. Must cut enough tissue out to get clean margins Being tan is your body s defense mechanism against the sun! Sun damages cells and over time can turn into cancer! (cumulative risk) 13
14 Risks Your risk doubles if you ve had more than five sunburns at any age one or more blistering sunburns in childhood or adolescence Class One Carcinogen Tanning beds are one of the most cancer causing things we have! 14
15 Tanning Bed Users 30 million people tan indoors in the U.S. every year 2.3 million of them are teens 74% more likely to develop melanoma than those who have never tanned indoors 15 Minutes in tanning bed=1 hour on equator Cancer Statistics 1.7 Million Americans will find out they have cancer this year 1,620 People die every day from cancer 30/day in WI 14.5 Million survivors Lots of hope we can beat it Early detection Better treatments 15
16 How is cancer treated? 3 main types of cancer treatment: Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation Surgery Remove the cancer cells/tumor 16
17 Radiation Just like x-ray at dentist but stronger Every day for 5-6 weeks REALLY strong x-ray beam Same spot every time Kills cancer cells Side effects Really tired Sunburn type reaction Radiation could be cancer causing Chemo Used when cancer spreads IV liquid in vessel by heart Kills fast dividing cells Cancer cells Healthy cells Side effects: Hair loss White blood cells Nausea/vomiting 17
18 One in every 4 deaths is from cancer. Are you at risk? Lifetime Risk for Developing Cancer One out of every two (2) males One out of every three (3) females 18
19 Is cancer contagious? No, cancer is NOT contagious. People with cancer need to be around other people. Can cancer be prevented? There is no sure way to prevent cancer, but there are things you can do to reduce your chances of getting it. Do everything right, you can still get cancer do everything wrong and you may never get cancer! 19
20 What causes cancer? Controllable Smoking Alcohol Lack of exercise Obesity Poor diet Stress Sleep Sun Uncontrollable 5% are hereditary Know your family history Talk to your doctor If you are concerned that you may someday get cancer Obesity is now #1 cause of cancer If all American s were in shape 1/3 of cancers in US could be avoided 400,000 less people/year STAY IN SHAPE! 20
21 Reduce your risk Exercise! #1 Thing to Reduce Risk EXERCISE 5 days/week for ½ hour, decreases risk by up to 40% 2% of our time Less technology time! 20 ounce Coke = 1 hour 15 minutes of biking 1 cookie = 20 minutes of jogging 21
22 What happens over time if you don t burn up these calories? Stored as fat overweight/obese 1 out of 3 American adults are overweight 1 out of 3 American adults are obese Raises our risk of diabetes, heart disease & CANCER! Reduce your risk Eat healthy! Serve up a healthy plate 2/3 of plate veggies, fruit, whole grains, beans Less than 1/3 of plate animal protein Eat 5 servings of COLORFUL fruits and vegetables every day bioflavonoids which slow cancer Only 20% of Wisconsin adults/teens get 5 servings ½ c in one serving Low calorie prevent weight gain Choose whole grains instead of refined white foods Eat right portions Drink 4 bottles of water a day 22
