ABOUT WORLD CANCER DAY BE PART OF THE BIG PICTURE World Cancer Day, every 4 February, empowers individuals and communities all over the world to make forward progress in the fight against cancer. Coordinated by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), World Cancer Day is the single initiative that unites and rallies the world s voices to raise awareness of cancer in a positive and inspiring way. The adoption of the UN s Sustainable Development Goals together with the Cancer Resolution resoundingly adopted by the member states of the World Health Organization, global health is entering a new era. Today, more than ever, a global commitment is needed to advance progress and inspire change. World Cancer Day is a powerful platform to amplify this message at a truly global level. #WorldCancerDay #WeCanICan 3
WORLD CANCER DAY THEME: WE CAN. I CAN represents the final year of the 3-year We can. I can. campaign. We can. I can. explores how everyone as a collective or as individuals can do their part to reduce the global burden of cancer. Just as cancer affects everyone in different ways, everyone has the power to take action to reduce the impact that cancer has. KEY CANCER FACTS 8.8 million people die from cancer every year - this number is predicted to rise to 13 million by One third of common cancers are preventable. Cancer is the second-leading cause of death worldwide. 65% of cancer deaths occur in low-to-middle income countries. Up to 3.7 million lives could be saved each year by implementing resource appropriate strategies for prevention, early detection and treatment. The total annual economic cost of cancer is estimated at approximately US$1.16 trillion. Click to download the World Cancer Day Infographic 4 World Cancer Day 2018 Press Kit
KEY MESSAGES WE CAN WE CAN INSPIRE ACTION, TAKE ACTION. We can all call on governments to step up their response to cancer by pushing for actions that we know will reduce premature deaths, and improve quality of life and cancer survival rates. WE CAN PREVENT CANCER. Equipping individuals and communities with the latest knowledge of the links between lifestyle and cancer can empower people to adopt healthy choices. Individuals and communities need to be informed that more than a third of cancers are preventable through adopting healthy behaviours. WE CAN JOIN FORCES TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Uniting around common goals will drive action on all fronts in prevention, early detection, treatment and care - catalysing progress towards achieving the World Cancer Declaration targets. WE CAN BUILD A QUALITY CANCER WORKFORCE. The cancer workforce can be equipped with the skills, knowledge and competencies required to meet the needs of individuals and communities across the cancer continuum. WE CAN CHALLENGE PERCEPTIONS. Governments, communities, schools, employers and media can challenge perceptions about cancer and dispel damaging myths and misconceptions so that all people are empowered to access accurate cancer information and quality cancer prevention and care. WE CAN IMPROVE ACCESS TO CANCER CARE. We can advocate for improved access to cancer treatment and services across the care continuum. All people have the right to benefit from these interventions on equal terms, regardless of geography and without suffering economic hardship as a consequence. WE CAN CREATE HEALTHY CITIES. Cities can take the lead in creating a quality urban environment that promotes and protects the health and wellbeing of its citizens. WE CAN CREATE HEALTHY WORKPLACES. Employers can implement measures in the workplace that will motivate and sustain healthy habits throughout a person s everyday life. #WorldCancerDay #WeCanICan 5
WE CAN CREATE HEALTHY SCHOOLS. Schools can be champions of healthy behaviours among children, staff, parents, families and the wider community by cultivating an environment that supports good nutrition and physical activity. WE CAN MAKE THE CASE FOR INVESTING IN CANCER CONTROL. Equipping individuals and communities with the latest knowledge of the links between lifestyle and cancer can empower people to adopt healthy choices. Individuals and communities need to be informed that more than a third of cancers are preventable through adopting healthy behaviours. WE CAN SHAPE POLICY CHANGE. Effective advocacy for policy change at all levels - local, national, and global can reduce exposure to cancer risk factors and improve access and availability of essential cancer medicines and quality cancer care. WE CAN SUPPORT OTHERS TO RETURN TO WORK. By providing the right support, employers and co-workers can foster a successful transition back to work for cancer patients. I CAN I CAN UNDERSTAND THAT EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES. Diagnosing cancer at its stages and seeking timely care can save lives. I CAN LOVE, AND BE LOVED. For a person living with cancer, strong emotional support and loving relationships with partners, friends and families can make a big difference in their life. I CAN MAKE MY VOICE HEARD. By making their voices heard, individuals can be powerful agents of influence and change for all people affected by cancer. We encourage you to make your voice heard and share your story at /share-your-story I CAN RETURN TO WORK. 8 QUOTES FOR WORLD CANCER DAY In the last year of the We can. I can. campaign for World Cancer Day, we hope to inspire real action from governments and civil society in addressing the inequities in cancer diagnosis, treatment and care, which unfortunately largely affects the most vulnerable populations in every country. In Australia, while we maintain some of the best cancer outcomes in the world, national data shows that the gap between those in the highest and lowest socioeconomic groups is continuing to widen over time. These overlooked voices must be more forcefully represented in our discussions this World Cancer Day. Professor Sanchia Aranda, President, Union for International Cancer Control and CEO of Cancer Council Australia, Australia Today, on World Cancer Day, we honour the health care professionals all over the world providing quality care to those living with cancer. For us to ensure better outcomes for patients, we must build a quality cancer workforce of skilled oncology professionals to meet the current human resource gap which remains one of the biggest obstacles in delivering quality services across the whole cancer continuum. Prof. Dr. Tezer Kutluk, Immediate past- President, Union for International Cancer Control, Turkey On this World Cancer Day, we will rally and unite the world in a collective and urgent call for more to be done to save millions of lives from cancer. By translating global commitments into powerful actions, we can address the equity divide and in time reduce the global cancer burden. World Cancer Day is a reminder that progress can be made and we all have a role to play governments, cities, industry, and individuals. Dr. Cary Adams, CEO, Union for International Cancer Control, Switzerland World Cancer Day serves as a powerful platform to mobilise voices all over the world, including the most underrepresented. Jordan is a country facing a significant refugee challenge, with many marginalised cancer patients lacking equal access to cancer services. We are working hard to understand how to deliver cancer care to refugee populations to reduce this equity gap this World Cancer Day, we can all inspire and take action so that thousands and millions of lives can be saved. HRH Princess Dina Mired, President-elect, Union for International Cancer Control, Jordan 8 World Cancer Day 2018 Press Kit
World Cancer Day aims to save millions of lives through raising awareness, education and pushing for governments and individuals to act. In the last year of the We can. I can. campaign, let us show the world that we can take actions to improve cancer treatments for public health use, ensuring cancer patients under this healthcare aren t at an unfair disadvantage. Ann Steyn, Union for International Cancer Control Board Member, South Africa World Cancer Day helps to include cancer on the Government agenda, which is extremely important for institutions dedicated to fighting cancer, such as FEMAMA (Brazilian Federation of Philanthropic Breast Health Institutions) to be heard. It is an opportunity to increase the debate regarding the impact of cancer control and strive to improve access to diagnosis and to treatment for thousands of patients. Today, World Cancer Day, we call on leaders, communities and people to commit to changing the current reality of individuals living with cancer. In Brazil, this means appropriate diagnosis and treatment for everyone regardless of which health system - public or private - they can access, adopting new technologies, training for more health professionals, equipment upgrades, allocating of more resources to the health area, and providing more accurate data on the country's cancer scenario to address efficient efforts. We know what to do today is the time to act and make an impact." Dr. Maira Caleffi, Union for International Cancer Control Board Member and President, FEMAMA, Brazil Today, on World Cancer Day we are calling for a united effort to close the global equity gap so that every person, man, woman, and child has the same quality and access to life-saving treatment regardless of where they live and their ethnic background. In the United States, despite the progress made in reducing the overall racial disparity in cancer death rates between black and white Americans, the disparity remains. To make significant changes within this generation, we need the support of the US Government and health agencies to work alongside civil society organisations. Only by joining forces can we make a difference. Sally Cowal, Union for International Cancer Control Board Member and Sr. VP, Global Cancer Control, Amercian Cancer Society, United States In the UK, thanks to research, more lives are saved from cancer every year and many patients are now surviving for years after their diagnosis. But the situation is not equal across all cancer types, and there are a number of cancers where survival remains devastatingly low. This World Cancer Day, we need more research into new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat these cancers so that all patients have the best possible chance of long term survival. Nick Grant, Union for International Cancer Control Board Member and Executive Director of International Partnerships, Cancer Research UK "Cancer has reached epidemic proportions and is increasing at an alarming rate in developing countries. Nuclear techniques are key to addressing this global health issue, from prevention to palliation. The IAEA is firmly committed to helping its Member States to access high-quality radiotherapy and nuclear medicine services. On World Cancer Day, the IAEA will highlight advances in radiation medicine and outline its efforts to help make these available to patients throughout the world." Mr Yukiya Amano, IAEA Director General #WorldCancerDay #WeCanICan 9
