1 Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy PACT PROGRAMME OF ACTION FOR CANCER THERAPY
2 Since 1980 the IAEA has invested US $202 million to establish safe and effective radiotherapy capacity, providing higher quality treatment to cancer patients worldwide. A global cancer crisis is looming. PACT is the IAEA s umbrella programme for combating cancer. PACT builds on the IAEA s expertise in radiation medicine and technology essential in cancer diagnosis and treatment to help developing countries fight cancer by integrating radiotherapy into sustainable comprehensive cancer control programmes. By 2020, more than 100 million people could die of cancer, the majority in low- and middle-income countries
3 Beyond radiotherapy To save lives, the world must increase the resources dedicated to cancer prevention, early detection and treatment. Cancer kills more people than HIV/AIDS, malaria, and TB combined THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW... Comprehensive national cancer control programmes including prevention, early detection, coupled with a combination of treatments such as surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy now result in increased health awareness and prevention, the cure of 45% of all cancers, and improved quality of life for cancer patients in developed countries. Developing countries deserve the same. PACT donors include: Albania, Canada, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, India, Japan, Republic of Korea, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, the United States, MDS Nordion (Canada), Best Medical International Inc. (USA/Canada), the US National Cancer Institute, the OPEC Fund for International Development, and support from the IAEA 2005 Nobel Peace Prize and individuals from around the world.
4 Full or preliminary impact* Reviews have so far been conducted in: * Integrated missions of PACT (impact) are joint interagency comprehensive needs assessment reviews. Albania, Georgia, Ghana, Madagascar, Moldova 1, Montenegro, Nicaragua, Peru, Sri Lanka, Syria 2, Tanzania 3, Vietnam and Yemen. PACT Model Demonstration Sites (PMDS) are active in: Albania, Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, Tanzania 3, Vietnam and Yemen. PMDS projects combine the individual strengths and resources of the Ministries of Health and their national counterparts, IAEA/PACT, WHO and other partners and stakeholders to achieve maximum impact on the cancer epidemic. For a period of 3 5 years, the partners will assist national authorities in the design, funding, implementation and evaluation of each PMDS. This integrated approach focuses on building the sustainability of all relevant cancer services via timely, planned and balanced investments across the health system. It strengthens the PMDS country s resource mobilization capacity while encouraging donor support.
