2 What is a skin cancer specialist nurse? Your skin cancer specialist nurse is an experienced nurse who specialises in the care and support of people diagnosed with skin cancer. This skin cancer specialist nurse is also your key worker. The skin cancer specialist nurses work closely with the dermatology team and are based at Salford Royal and Fairfield Bury. What does the skin cancer nurse service provide? If you have skin cancer or are having tests to confirm possible skin cancer it can be a worrying and frightening time for you, your relatives or carers. The specialist skin cancer nurse can offer support and advice at any time throughout your illness. Some areas where the skin cancer specialist nurse may be able to help: l Explaining your illness and treatment - answer your questions and provide information so that you can take part in discussions about your care. l Emotional support dealing with a diagnosis or potential diagnosis of cancer can be very difficult. The skin cancer specialist nurse is available to discuss any emotional worries or concerns you may have. l Helping to co-ordinate your care the specialist skin cancer nurse (key worker) can talk to doctors, nurses and other health care professionals involved in your care both in the hospital and the community. l Wound management you may have difficulty with wound care. The skin cancer specialist nurse will help find the best way for you to manage wound problems. How do I contact the skin cancer nurse specialist? You can contact the skin cancer nurse specialist yourself or give permission for others who are involved in your care to contact the specialist nurse on your behalf. Your skin cancer nurse specialists are Dianne Waters, Nicola O Callaghan (Salford Royal) Telephone number is: and Laura Armstrong (Fairfield Bury). Telephone number is: or Dianne.Waters@srft.nhs.uk Nicola.O Callaghan@srft.nhs.uk Laura.Armstrong@srft.nhs.uk We hold a monthly support group in the Mayo Building at Salford Royal - please contact us for details. When they are not available to answer your calls there is an answer machine to take your messages; they will be answered the next available working day. The skin cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT) The skin cancer MDT is made up of a group of people who are cancer experts. They understand how to recognise cancer and how it might behave. They are able to carry out tests and decide what the answers mean and they know what treatments are available. The skin cancer MDT meets on a regular basis where your case will be discussed; you will be informed of the treatment options available to you. There are lots of people in our skin cancer MDT who may play a part in looking after you. They may include: Dermatologist Dermatologists are doctors who specialise in diagnosing and treating skin disease including skin cancer. Plastic Surgeon Plastic surgeons are doctors who specialise in surgery for skin cancer and other conditions. 1 G W.
