2 This toolkit is aimed at workplaces that have achieved or are working towards the Corporate Health Standard or the Small Workplace Health Award. It is designed to provide your workplace with essential information on the breast, cervical and bowel screening programmes. It also contains ideas and suggestions on how to promote the programmes effectively within your workplace. The information within this toolkit contributes to the General health issues criteria (gold level) of the Corporate Health Standard. The Screening Division of Public health Wales NHS Trust is responsible for: Breast Test Wales Cervical Screening Wales Bowel Screening Wales All those living in Wales who are eligible for screening will be routinely invited to participate. It is important that people living in Wales, are aware of these national screening programmes. It is essential that the public is aware of the screening programmes, and the workplace can be key in raising awareness, especially in the hard to reach areas of Wales.

4 Section One This section contains: Important key messages on NHS cancer screening programmes in Wales

5 Breast Test Wales (BTW) invites all eligible women aged between every 3 years. Women over 70 years can request an appointment by contacting Breast Test Wales. Breast Cancer 1 in 8 women living in the Wales will develop breast cancer at some time Breast cancer is more common in women over 50 and the risk increases with age Some breast cancers (5-10%) run in families Treatment is more successful if the cancer is found at an early stage Breast screening Women aged are invited every 3 years Women over 70 can ask for an appointment Breast screening has reduced the risk of dying from breast cancer by 35% BTW has the highest detection rate in the UK 1 in every 20 women will be re-called for further investigation. This does not mean that they have breast cancer, but further tests will need to be conducted For every 500 screened, one life will be saved Breast awareness Know what is normal for you Know what changes to look for Look and feel Report any changes to your GP without delay Attend for routine breast screening if aged over 50

6 Cervical Screening Wales (CSW) invites eligible women aged between every 3 years. Cervical Cancer The Smear test aims to detect abnormal changes to the cervix which left untreated can develop into cervical cancer High risk Human papilloma virus (HPV) has been detected in over 90% of cervical cancers Due to cervical screening, cervical cancer is now an uncommon disease in the UK Cervical cancer is the 2nd most common cancer in women worldwide Women who smoke have about twice the risk of developing cervical cancer than nonsmokers Cervical screening Cervical screening is not a test for cervical cancer, it is a test to detect cell changes All eligible women, including those in a same-sex relationship are invited for a smear Having a smear test reduces the risk of developing cervical cancer by 90%. Screening prevents around 3900 cases and 1000 deaths from cervical cancer each year in the UK All eligible women aged will be invited for a smear test every 3 years Women who are virgins are at low risk but not no risk Even women who have been vaccinated for HPV should still attend for their smear Cervical Screening Awareness You should see your doctor is you have: Unusual vaginal discharge Bleeding between your periods Bleeding or pain during or after sex Bleeding after you have gone through the menopause

7 Bowel Screening Wales (BSW) currently invites all eligible men and women aged between every two years. This programme differs from other cancer screening programmes: Bowel screening kits are sent through the post direct to the participants home Screening is every 2 years It is the first national screening programme to invite men as well as women Bowel Cancer Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in Wales for both men and women Around 1 in 20 people over 50 will develop bowel cancer in their lifetime 2,000 new cases are diagnosed yearly in Wales Bowel Screening All eligible men and women between 60 and 74 will be sent a bowel screening test kit A bowel screening kit is sent through the post direct to your home address. You complete the kit at home in private The FOB kit (Faecal Occult Blood) look for hidden blood in the bowel motion The bowel screening programme aims to detect bowel cancer at an early stage in people who show no symptoms Bowel screening has shown to reduce the risk of dying from bowel cancer by 16 percent Bowel Cancer Awareness You should see your doctor if: There is bleeding from your back passage or tiny traces of blood in your bowel movements A change in bowel habits, such as constipation or diarrhoea for six weeks or more Sever stomach pains which started recently and are continuous especially after eating Unexplained weight loss

9 Work Place Health Matters There are many benefits to promoting screening in your workplace: Opportunity for staff to find out more about breast, cervical & bowel cancer screening and breast awareness Opportunity to dispel myths surrounding breast, cervical and bowel cancer Employees are a captive audience for health promotion Complies with Corporate Heath Standard and Small Workplace Health Award Promotes caring employees Creates a safe environment to ask questions Encourages staff to take responsibility for their own health The awareness workshops are free of charge You will receive appropriate leaflets, handouts and promotional materials for staff

10 How to promote screening in your workplace Screening programmes can be promoted throughout the year or in line with national health campaigns. Below are possible suggestions of how screening programmes could be promoted in your workplace: What the Screening Engagement Department can do for you: Provide screening information leaflets and promotional materials for staff Deliver professional presentations on the NHS breast, cervical and bowel screening programmes in Wales, together with breast awareness advice Provide free publicity materials to promote the sessions: Posters/flyers/loan of display boards/article for staff news letter or intranet site Support any work place health events by providing a staffed or unstaffed screening information stand Provide a promotional screening DVD that can be played via workplace monitors or TV s A possible story/ photo in the local newspaper (if in agreement), demonstrating the Company s commitment to the health and well being of its staff A written evaluation of the session (s) What you can do? Tell as many of your eligible staff as possible about the service Continuous display of screening information posters on staff notice boards Promote screening in wage slips, staff intranet page, newsletter or on e-bulletins Organise staff health awareness days

11 Organise structured health information sessions for staff The Screening Engagement Department expects the following: Co-operation between all participating parties Liaison between Occupational Health & Human Resources to timetable staff into sessions for the appropriate length of time An agreed minimum number of attendees for workshop sessions We reserve the right to cancel an event if the number of attendees is below the minimum expected. Time out of work for staff to attend the sessions. Liaison between Occupational Health & Human Resources (if appropriate) to give suitable advance information/invitations to employees regarding the sessions The provision of a suitable room, equipment and I.T. support if possible. Room must have adequate ventilation, light, power sockets and ease of access Light refreshments to be provided for staff, if possible, at the start of each session. Parking close to venue, if possible Adequate internal promotion of sessions, encouraging staff to attend Materials for the screening programme can be obtained by filling in the Information Request Form, which can be found in Section 3. 12 National Health Campaigns Screening programmes can be promoted throughout the year or in line with national health campaigns. The table below suggests some of these campaigns. If you would like to receive a screening information pack to support any of the campaigns below, please register your interest by ing anna.henwood@wales.nhs.uk and state which campaign (s) you wish to support. A screening campaign pack will be automatically sent to your workplace four weeks prior to the campaign taking place.
