2 Cambridge Isotope Laboratories, Inc. Cambridge Isotope Laboratories, Inc. (CIL) introduces several firsts in this new product guide. CIL has synthesized the first isotope-labeled standard for chlorinated paraffin analysis, a group of compounds that are being evaluated for inclusion in the Stockholm Treaty. CIL also has new hydroxy-pah mixes available, including a calibration set, labeled spiking solution, and native precision and recovery standards, as well as the individual standards that were used to formulate the mixes. Standards to study phenolic compounds are now offered, as are new standards for the study of polychlorinated naphthalenes. New dioxin and PCB mixtures, flame retardant, pollutant, and pesticide standards round out the list of new standards now available. Dioxin Mixes This new mix of native analytes includes all 17 2,3,7,8-containing dioxin and furan native congeners, as well as the first eluting dioxin and furan congeners (1,3,6,8-TCDD and 1,3,6,8-TCDF) and 1,3,7,9-TCDD. Laboratories analyzing many samples by US EPA Method 1613 will appreciate the value of the new, larger sizes for the Internal Standard Stock and Labeled Compound Stock solutions. The volumes of these two spiking solutions are matched to enable analysis of the same number of samples. EDF-5493 Dioxin/Furan Native Mix (unlabeled) 2378 isomers TCDD/F TCDD 1/2/5 µg/ml in nonane 1.2 ml EDF ML Method 1613 Internal Standard Stock Solution ( 13 C 12 ) 200 ng/ml in nonane 2.5 ml EDF ML Method 1613 Labeled Compound Stock Solution ( 13 C 12 ) 100/200 ng/ml in nonane 5 ml PCBs, Mixes and Metabolites PCB-182 is useful as a sampling/syringe standard. CIL now offers the unlabeled Certified Standard version of this PCB congener. EC ,2 3,4,4,5,6 -HeptaCB ( 13 C 12 ) 100 µg/ml in nonane 3 ml PCB-182-CS 2,2,3,4,4,5,6 -HeptaCB (unlabeled certified standard) 100 µg/ml in isooctane 1.2 ml PCB-118 is considered both a dioxinlike PCB (one of the 12 toxic PCBs given toxic equivalence factors (TEFs) by the World Health Organization (WHO)), and a marker PCB (one of the seven most commonly found PCBs in technical PCB mixtures). Many laboratories will analyze both dioxinlike and markers PCBs, so to avoid duplication the older marker PCB mixtures did not include PCB-118. For labs that analyze just the marker PCBs, CIL now offers both labeled and unlabeled mixtures of Marker-7 PCBs. EC-5375 Marker-7 PCB Mixture (w/pcb-118) ( 13 C 12 ) 1000 ng/ml in nonane 1.2 ml EC-5495 Marker-7 PCB Mixture (w/pcb-118) (unlabeled) 1000 ng/ml in isooctane 1.2 ml This mixture contains the unlabeled analogs of the Recovery Standard for OH-PAHs (ES-5474). EC-549 CDC PCB Recovery Standard Check Solution (unlabeled) 200 ng/ml in toluene 1 ml The WHO coplanar (IUPAC# 77, 81,126, and 169) and mono-ortho (105,114,118,123,156,157,167,189) PCB mixture contains all 12 of the dioxinlike PCBs at 5000 ng/ml. This represents a 5x higher concentration than previously offered, especially useful for high-volume testing laboratories or those requiring a higher concentration for mixing purposes. EC-4935-B WHO Coplanar and Mono-Ortho PCBs (unlabeled) 5000 ng/ml in isooctane 1.2 ml These PCB metabolites (at first appearance, metabolites of PCB-107 and -146, but actually rearrangements of the more predominant PCB-105, -118 and -153) are part of the new standards for analysis of phenolic compounds. The methoxy PCBs are derivatized versions of the hydroxy metabolites commonly found in human samples. MEOCB Methoxy-2,3,3,4,5-PentaCB ( 13 C 12 MEOCB Methoxy-2,2,3,4,5,5 -HexaCB ( 13 C 12 PAHs and Substituted PAHs CIL has developed a new pair of labeled and unlabeled chlorinated benz[a]anthracene standards. Several native PAH standards are now available in isooctane solvent, replacing existing solutions in methylene chloride. CLM Chlorobenz[a]anthracene ( 13 C 6 ULM Chlorobenz[a]anthracene (unlabeled ULM-2416-I-1.2 Benzo[b]fluoranthene (unlabeled) 200 µg/ml in isooctane 1.2 ml ULM-2417-I-1.2 Benzo[k]fluoranthene (unlabeled) 200 µg/ml in isooctane 1.2 ml ULM-2426-I-1.2 Indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene (unlabeled) 200 µg/ml in isooctane 1.2 ml
3 Cambridge Isotope Laboratories, Inc. Industrial Chemicals 2-Butoxyethanol is used in lacquers, varnishes, soaps, cosmetics, and other household cleaners. Along with additives such as ethylene glycol, it has come under increasing scrutiny as one of the chemicals used in the process of fractional distillation ( fracking ) of natural gas and the potential for groundwater contamination. DLM Butoxyethanol (1,1,2,2-D4) 1000 µg/ml in water 1.2 ml ULM Butoxyethanol (unlabeled) 1000 µg/ml in water 1.2 ml Flame Retardants With brominated diphenyl ether (BDE) flame retardants being phased out or banned altogether, industry is turning to other flame-retardant options. Consequently, alkyl phosphate flame retardants are coming under increased scrutiny for health and environmental concerns as their use increases. CIL has begun to develop high-purity standards for select alkyl phosphate compounds and will continue to develop more in the future. DLM Tributyl phosphate (D 27 ) 1 mg/ml in acetonitrile 1.2 ml ULM Tributyl phosphate (unlabeled) 1 mg/ml in acetonitrile 1.2 ml DLM Triethyl phosphate (D 15 ) 1 mg/ml in acetonitrile 1.2 ml ULM Triethyl phosphate (unlabeled) 1 mg/ml in acetonitrile 1.2 ml Although Dechlorane Plus has been in use for over 40 years, it is only recently that it has become a compound of environmental interest. CIL is pleased to announce DP standards now in toluene as well as the nonane solutions we have produced for several years. Toluene is more miscible with certain solvents and can be used in a variety of applications to complement the more traditional methods utilizing nonane standards. CLM-8569-T-1.2 Dechlorane Plus syn (bis-cyclopentene- 13 C 10 ) 100 µg/ml in toluene 1.2 ml ULM-7886-T-1.2 Dechlorane Plus syn (unlabeled) 100 µg/ml in toluene 1.2 ml CLM-8588-T-1.2 Dechlorane Plus anti (bis-cyclopentene- 13 C 10 ) 100 µg/ml in toluene 1.2 ml ULM-7887-T-1.2 Dechlorane Plus anti (unlabeled) 100 µg/ml in toluene 1.2 ml Chlorinated Paraffins Chlorinated paraffins, or chloroalkanes, are industrial chemicals that have been used extensively for many years as coolants and lubricants, plasticizers, and flame retardants, among other uses. Short-chain (C 10 -C 13 ) chlorinated paraffins (SCCP) have come under increased scrutiny in recent years because of concern for long-range transport, persistence in the environment, bioaccumulation, and potentially toxic endpoints. CIL has been working diligently to synthesize a single-component SCCP standard to assist researchers in what is an extremely difficult analytical process. We are pleased to announce our first offering of labeled and unlabeled C 10 alkane standards containing six chlorines. Look to CIL for future developments of chlorinated paraffin standards. CLM ,5,5,6,6,10-Hexachlorodecane ( 13 C 10 ) 100 µg/ml in nonane 1.2 ml ULM ,5,5,6,6,10-Hexachlorodecane (unlabeled) 95% + CP 100 µg/ml in nonane 1.2 ml PCNs and PCN Mixes CIL has undertaken a new synthesis and formulation project for our polychlorinated naphthalene product line. These two labeled PCNs previously contained small but detectable levels of native impurities. A fresh synthesis has yielded labeled standards without interfering amounts of native analytes. ECN-5261-A 1,2,3,5,6,7-HexaCN ( 13 C 10 ) 10 µg/ml in isooctane 1.2 ml ECN-5270-A 1,2,3,4,5,6,7-HeptaCN ( 13 C 10 ) 10 µg/ml in isooctane 1.2 ml Polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) are a group of 75 compounds structurally similar to PCBs. Until the 1970s, PCNs were high-volume chemicals commercially produced as mixtures of several congeners, distributed under trade names such as Halowax. Owing to the harmful POP properties and risks related to continuing production, use and releases of PCNs to the environment, the committee members of the Stockholm Convention have listed PCNs as chemicals they are considering for inclusion in a future revision of the treaty. In a move to help researchers develop methods to clearly identify these compounds in various sample matrices, CIL has developed new calibration and spiking standards for analysis of many of the most important PCN congeners. ECN-5489 PCN Calibration Solutions (CS1 CS7) in isooctane ml ECN-5490 PCN Cleanup Solution ( 13 C 10 ) 0.5 ng/ml in methanol:isooctane 5 ml ECN-5497 PCN Native PAR Solution (unlabeled) 1000 ng/ml in isooctane 1.2 ml
4 PAH Metabolites CIL introduces new individual standards and standard mixtures for the study of hydroxylated polyaromatic hydrocarbons (OH-PAHs). These PAH metabolites have been of interest for many years as biomarkers for asphalt production, coal smoke, and aerosols, as well as other uses. The presence of these compounds in human urine is an indication of exposure to PAHs from industrial sources. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention, as well as other health laboratories around the world, have been studying these compounds to determine human exposure to PAHs from combustion for many years. CIL has offered many of these over the years, but this is the first time they have all been available at the same time. The individual standards were formulated in toluene to improve stability, the labeled spike diluted in acetonitrile for miscibility in polar matrices. In addition, a new 1.2 ml size of CIL s popular ES-5164 PAH mixture has been added for the convenience of those researchers whose needs do not require 10 ml volumes. ES-5481 PAH Mixture (D) 2500 µg/ml in toluene 5 ml ES PAH Surrogates Standard Mixture (D) 200 µg/ml in 90% toluene:10% isooctane 1.2 ml Phenolic Mixes CIL has produced a number of individual standards to quantify levels of PCB metabolites found in the human body. PCBs are hydroxylated in the liver s attempt to metabolize aromatic chemical contaminants. Other compounds, such as Triclosan (5-chloro-2- (2,4-dichlorophenoxy) phenol or 2,4,4 -trichloro-2-hydroxydiphenyl ether) and PCP (pentachlorophenol) are structurally phenolic ubiquitous exposure biomarkers from various sources. The analytes in the calibration solutions are the derivatized analogues of the target analytes 4-methoxy-2,3,3,4,5-pentachlorobiphenyl for 4-hydroxy-2,3,3,4,5-pentachlorobiphenyl, 5-chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)anisole for Triclosan, pentabromoanisole for pentabromophenol, etc. The spiking solution consists of the parent (underivatized) hydroxy compounds, so the isotope dilution incorporates the derivatization process. The unusual concentration levels in the calibration solutions result from the correction of the molecular weights of the derivatized analytes. ES-5482 Phenolic Calibration Standards (CS1 CS6) in nonane ml ES-5483 Phenolic Spiking Standard (13C) 10/25 ng/ml in methanol 10 ml ES-5496 Phenolic Native PAR standard (unlabeled) 5000 ng/ml in nonane 1.2 ml
5 isotope.com Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) CIL introduces labeled and unlabeled standards for Diclofenac, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). CIL has also developed a new progesterone standard (D 9, 98%) replacing the previous standard (D 8, 96%). Although having greater isotopic enrichment (98% vs. 96%) and higher mass (D 9 vs. D 8 ) the price remains the same! DLM Diclofenac (phenyl-d 4 ) CP 96% 100 µg/ml in methylene chloride 1.2 ml ULM Diclofenac (unlabeled) 100 µg/ml in methylene chloride 1.2 ml DLM Progesterone (2,2,4,6,6,17a,21,21,21-D 9 ) 100 µg/ml in p-dioxane 1.2 ml Halogenated Aromatics 2,5-Dichlorophenol is a metabolite of 1,4-dichlorobenzene, an industrial chemical with many uses. Due to recent interest at the CDC (please see their recent biomonitoring summary), CIL is formulating this standard for release in the summer of This is an emerging contaminant expected to be targeted by more regulatory groups. Tetrachloro-m-xylene is commonly used as an internal standard. Pentabromoanisole is a metabolite of pentabromophenol, a common flame retardant. It is part of the new standards now available for analysis of phenolic compounds. CLM ,5-Dichlorophenol ( 13 C 6 ) 100 µg/ml in methanol 1.2 ml ULM Tetrachloro-m-xylene (unlabeled) 100 µg/ml in isooctane 1.2 ml CLM Pentabromoanisole ( 13 C 6 ) 100 µg/ml in toluene 1.2 ml ULM Pentabromoanisole (unlabeled) 100 µg/ml in toluene 1.2 ml Standards in Solvents Compatible with Polar Matrices CIL is expanding many of its standards into polar solvents, more suited to liquid chromatography and related analytical procedures. The goal is to remove the laborious solvent-exchange procedures needed to transition from GC-able solvents like nonane and isooctane into the preferred polar solvents. ULM Vinyl chloride (unlabeled) 50 µg/ml in methanol 1.2 ml ULM Methyl-1-naphthol (unlabeled ULM NNK (unlabeled) 100 µg/ml in nonane:ethanol (9:1) 1.2 ml ULM-6935-MT-1.2 2,4,4 -Trichloro-2-hydroxydiphenyl ether (Triclosan) (unlabeled) 100 µg/ml in MTBE 1.2 ml Phthalates Due to stability concerns in some of our phthalate mono-ester standards, CIL has started a program to develop standards in less aggressive solvents. One such compound, MCPP, has been reformulated in MTBE, switching from the previous offering in acetonitrile. CIL continues to expand its line of phthalate standards with the addition of new native standards for di-n-butyl phthalate and benzyl butyl phthalate. CLM-6847-MT-1.2 Mono(3-carboxypropyl) phthalate (ring-1,2-13 C 2, dicarboxyl- 13 C 2 ) 100 µg/ml in MTBE 1.2 ml ULM-6848-MT-1.2 Mono(3-carboxypropyl) phthalate (unlabeled) 100 µg/ml in MTBE 1.2 ml ULM di-n-butyl phthalate (unlabeled) 100 µg/ml in nonane 1.2 ml ULM Benzyl butyl phthalate (unlabeled) 100 µg/ml in nonane 1.2 ml Pesticides and Pesticide Mixes CIL has produced labeled 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCPy) and 2-[(dimethoxyphosphorothioyl) sulfanyl]succinic acid, metabolites of chlorpyrifos and malathion. While CIL has offered 13 C-labeled versions of endrin aldehyde and endrin ketone as dried down standards for years, the complementary native versions in the same form are now offered as well. Another project has generated several new pesticide mixtures, both labeled and unlabeled. Visit to see full descriptions of these new mixtures or contact us at CIL.
