1 PHONE: (972) Helen Maureen Logan March 29, April 15, 2015 Helen Maureen Logan of Allen, Texas passed away April 15, She was born in March 29, 1943 to Harry Edward Logan and Ruth Elizabeth (Nichols) Logan in Vancouver, Canada. Helen was a graduate of the University of Alberta, also holding BS and MS degrees of McGill and Concordia Universities in Montreal, respectively. Many years she taught nursing at Dawson College, Montreal. Before that she had been a practicing nurse in Canada, England, Germany and Switzerland. She also worked as RN in US. Her passion was gardening and she was an avid photographer and painter. She is survived by her husband, Andrej; daughter, Maya; step children, Spela, Miha and Domen; grandchildren, Klemen, Matej, Ella, Aydan and Emma; and other loving family members in Canada and Slovenia. A memorial service will be held 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, Texas. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross at

Memorials Dear Andrej, I was deeply touched by your telephone call, your recall of Helen and the written words by which you brought me news of her. Thank you for doing so. It is fully fifty years since I knew her and more than thirty years since I met her in Montreal on a visit which lasted barely an hour. On that occasion she spoke of you so fondly and was impatient to be reunited with you. I remember her beauty and her quiet dignity which made her stand out among people around her. Her voice had a gentle, musical quality. As a nurse, she brought peace, comfort and hope to her patients. More than half a century later, I still remember how, being in her company, one felt a sense of calm, a sailor finding port after a stormy voyage. This was a gift she bestowed on all who knew her, patients, friends, colleagues. I do hope that she will lead you to this safe haven where grief will end and only happy memories remain I am deeply saddened by Helen's passing and mourn her loss. By that I mean that I think she was my friend of longest duration. In many ways, she taught me how to be a friend. I think she had a rare talent for friendship; I was always impressed that, despite moving many times, she had managed to keep in touch with people

3 from every phase of her life, dating back to her childhood in Vancouver. We met many years ago when we were both on extended trips to South America. Traveling separately over different paths from Canada, we both happened to book tickets on an Ecuadorian government ship that ran trips to the Galapagos Islands. I long ago lost touch with everyone else on that trip, but my friendship with Helen endured. She wrote letters -- later, s -- remembered birthdays, and was always eager to chat on the phone. Once she wrote to tell me she was pregnant and I remember writing back that I thought she would make a wonderful mother. Helen was a deeply kind and gentle person, but also inwardly strong and resolute. She was a wonderful listener who encouraged confidences. You could always count on her calm counsel and sympathetic ear, whether you needed advice on a medical issue, a personal problem or a wilting houseplant. The first time I visited Helen in Montreal was for a job interview at the Montreal Gazette. When I got the job and moved there, she generously showed me her Montreal and introduced me to all her friends. Over the years, we took Maya on excursions, sat in Vietnamese and other ethnic restaurants, shared Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners. Helen was always organized, efficient and on top of things -- raising a young daughter, handling a challenging job, and maintaining an active social life. Not only did Helen love having friends in her life, she also loved to enrich her friends lives by introducing them to her other friends. When I lived in Hong Kong, she connected me with the daughter of an old Edmonton friend, who was traveling in Asia, and I was able to show her around Hong Kong when she passed through. More recently, when I was in Vancouver spending time with my mother, Helen connected me with two of her old Vancouver friends and I found myself on a evening cruise on a salmon fishing boat on the Fraser River, seeing Vancouver from an entirely different angle. Helen, I will forever miss your calming presence and your staunch friendship. I like to think of your beautiful spirit hovering over the magical garden you created in Texas, and being at peace there. To Andrej and Maya: I share your tears and your sorrow, and my heart is with you.

4 JANET RAE BROOKS, MAY 4, 2015 I find it hard to control my emotions as I think of Helen and the person I remember. Helen was so serene and calming but at the same time exhibited an inner strength and honesty. One knew you could share a problem with her and know you would get a sympathetic response. Helen was a grand Lady and we share your loss. I'm sure Helen would concur with the sentiments of the poem "Remember" by Christina Rossetti who died of cancer too. Remember me when I am gone away, Gone far away into the silent land; When you can no more hold me by the hand, Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay, Remember me when no more, day by day; You tell me of our future that you have planned; Only remember me; you understand. It will be late to counsel then or pray, Yet if you should forget me for a while, And afterwards remember, do not grieve; Fore if the darkness and corruption leave A vestige of the thought that once I had, Better by far you should forget and smile, Than that you remember me and be sad. Andrej our tears and love and thoughts are with you and all the family, Yours aye John, Vida, Diamond Harbour, New Zealand JOHN WATSON, APRIL 28, 2015 I am writing this letter on behalf of the many friends who knew Helen in Montreal. We are far away in physical distance but our thoughts and hearts are in Texas now. Helen lived here in Montreal for many years and she touched many people during that time. She taught with many of us at Dawson College. She was an excellent teacher. She was such an organized person that it helped us all to have her around! Helen hated smoking and years before anyone else had decided to put their foot down about second hand smoke, she wouldn t let us smoke in her apartment. We would sit on the fire escape outside. She was a great traveler so good that I hitched hiked out west with her one year and stood for ages on the highway in northern Ontario waiting for rides and being bitten by mosquitos, but she never complained! She loved animals and a person who loves animals has to be very special! Helen had cats and dogs and was very good to them. She even gave fluids interstitially to

5 her very ill cat. She was anxious to get home from the hospital at the end of her life partly to see Lily her cat. We all knew her animals here. One animal in particular was Beauty the cat who was like a dog in some ways because when we would go for a walk on Ile Bizard, Quebec with the dog, Beauty would follow along! Whenever any of us had a worry about our animals we could call Helen. She was concerned about the welfare of animals. We got our cat Leo from Helen because she thought that he would die in the little shack where he was found. She buried our cat Edward on Ile Bizard. Helen loved her family. She followed Andrej to Slovenia and was very fond of the country and very attached to Andrej s family. And of course, Maya s birth was wonderful for her. We all got to love the dark haired and dark eyed little girl. Then some years later, through letters and pictures that she would send us, we got to know Aydan, her grandson. Helen never lost touch with Edmonton where she spent much of her early life and did her nursing training. She lived in a lovely little house then with her mother and brother which Helen and I went to see about two years ago when we spent a week in Edmonton together. She got to go in to see the house again after many years and she talked about her memories of living there. Helen was an excellent cook. I am using some of her recipes to this day. We used to go to Ile Bizard and have wonderful meals! Many of us spent New Year s Eve on Ile Bizard with Helen and Andrej and ate like kings! She loved eating out, was always ready to try new restaurants and she liked all kinds of different foods. Every time Helen came to visit us in Montreal, she and a group of former nursing colleagues would get together for Dim sum. She knew everything about flowers and plants and her garden here was beautiful as it is in Texas. Anna and Betty and I got to see how pretty the garden was around her Texas home when we were there in February of this year. The flowers are starting to pop out here in Montreal. There are little scilla which come out first and they are now starting to make the lawns look blue. In the past Helen and I would look for these little flowers on our way up to teach at the hospital and then being excited to find them out again, would stand and rave about them! Helen listened to NPR and even in Texas kept up with the news here on the

6 CBC. She followed politics and knew what was happening in Canada probably before us. Sometimes when I called her, she could tell me the temperature here. She cared about the environment and Andrej could tell you of the methods she used to try to help save it. She sent beautiful cards on our birthdays and some of us are still wearing scarves that Helen knit for us. She was very good at keeping in touch with all of us, because a friend for Helen was a friend for life. Helen was always there if one needed to talk and she was always very understanding.
