Form Filling Registration Medical Screening (10 15 mins) Haemoglobin Check Blood Donation (10 15 mins) Rest and Refreshment (15 mins) How should I prepare for the blood donation? Should I fast or eat specific food? What should I do after a blood donation? No fasting is needed Postpone donation if you feel unwell Eat a light meal and have a good night s rest before blood donation Most people will feel okay after the donation. Some might experience slight giddiness. Rest on the donation bench for 10 mins Drink more water Avoid strenuous exercises for the day Visit redcross.sg for more tips on post-donation care!
4 EVERY blood donation can save up to 3 lives. How does my donated blood help? I lost so much blood during delivery that it took many bags of blood before I finally pulled through. Thanks to blood donors, my son has a mom. Blood Usage in Singapore General Surgery (such as Orthopaedic surgery, Heart and Chest surgery) General Medicine Haematology (blood diseases) Accident & Emergency where does my donated blood go? Screening Donation Processing Transfuse Store & Distribute Testing & Quality Control Myth If I donate blood, I won t have enough We re only taking about 8-12% of your blood volume, depending on your weight. As a healthy individual, you really won t miss it. Your body will replenish itself with fresh, new blood within a few weeks. The blood volume will be back to normal in about three days.
5 Eligibility to Donate Blood CAN I DONATE BLOOD? NEW Effective from 1 Jan years old Weigh at least 45kg Have a haemoglobin level of at least 12.5g/dl 13.0g/dL 12.5g/dL Be generally in good health (no symptoms of infection for at least one week, e.g. sore throat, cough, flu, diarrhoea, or no fever in the last three weeks) Have not travelled to any malaria affected area in the last four months (see for more information) What to bring on the day of donation? Identification document such as NRIC Donor Card Student Pass Work Permit A signed parental consent form, for donors who are 16 or 17 years old. Form can be downloaded at Myth Donating blood hurts. Actually, it s not really that painful. It s just a small prick in your arm and our trained nurses will apply a local anesthetic first, so you ll hardly feel a thing. Getting pricked by a durian, now that hurts!
