WHAT BEATS MAKING THE GRADE? TRY SAVING A FEW LIVES IN THE PROCESS.

In this Central Blood Bank Drive Manual, we ll cover why blood donation is critical. We ll talk about your role, our role and the basic rules of the road. We ll pass on a few Quick Tips for driving better performance. We ll take you through the process from start to finish. And we ll give you details on anything else you want to know.

QUICK TIP 1 THE NEED IS EPIC. Put the power in their hands. Create an easily accessible drive bulletin board or info center to let students inspire each other. By teaming up with Central Blood Bank, your school can save hundreds of lives here in the Pittsburgh area in a single day. Surprised? Here are some more things you might not know about the need for blood donation and the movement to meet it. WHAT WE RE UP AGAINST: Every 2 seconds someone needs blood. 4.5 million Americans would die each year without life-saving blood transfusions. About 3 gallons of blood supports the entire nation s blood needs for 1 minute. 37% OF THE POPULATION IS ELIGIBLE TO DONATE. ONLY 5% ACTUALLY DO. Car accident victims can need 40 pints of blood or more. A family member with cancer can need up to 4 pints of blood every day for 2 to 4 weeks to tolerate certain treatments. Severe burn victims can need about 20 units of platelets during their treatment. Blood drives throughout the school year are needed to meet the ongoing need for blood in the community.

YOU HAVE THE POWER TO DO SOMETHING. how the drive works 1 registration BE THE DIFFERENCE. Your school can help ensure the blood supply is there whenever students, faculty or their families require medical attention in the local area. To maintain accurate records, donors are asked to present a form of proper identifications and asked to read about donor requirements. Schools are one of our best hopes of reaching large groups, rallying support and saving lives in our community. Central Blood Bank needs to collect 200,000 units annually to meet the demands of the region. There is no substitute for blood. Donations are the only way hospitals and trauma centers accumulate blood supplies for patients in need. Your school can lead by example. Inspire other schools to save lives in our community. If all blood donors gave 2 to 4 times a year, it would help prevent blood shortages. QUICK TIP 2 Donor ambassadors offer critical support. Find out if anyone has donated before, is passionate about blood donation or has even been a recipient. Ask them to help recruit others. 2 free mini-physical Donors meet with a Central Blood Bank expert to review their medical history and take a mini-physical. This will give donors free health information, like blood pressure, cholesterol and more. A blood test will confirm donors have enough iron-carrying blood cells to donate. 3 donation The actual donation takes about minutes during which one pint of blood is collected. All medical materials used are sterile and disposable. 4 refreshments & relaxation After donation, donors will be asked to rest for about 15 minutes while enjoying light refreshments.

QUICK TIP 3 What s the easiest way to drive people to donate blood? Ask them. READY. SET. There are a few things every blood drive needs, including the right space, scheduling and support. Here are the basics you need to get started, and we re here to help you every step of the way. Create a donation goal How many lives do you want to save? Your Central Blood Bank expert will work with you to determine the number of donations possible for your school over the year. You ll also work to establish goals for each drive. Choose a date and time for the event Try to work with other school program leaders to find a time that works for everyone. It s important to get as much involvement in each drive as you can to better your chance of meeting your goal. Reserve a donation area The drive is not solidified until a room is chosen and reserved. The goals you set up with your Central Blood Bank expert will guide the type and size room you need.

TALK IT UP. The secret to getting people to the drive is not keeping it a secret. The right on-site posters and event signage will help keep people informed, educated and excited. IT ONLY TAKES 10 MINUTES. BUT IT LASTS A LIFETIME. s We offer templates that will let you get the word out to your school in style. Use them for event details, promotional messaging and encouragement from school leadership. Posters, etc. Depending on your school s needs, we offer a variety of promotional materials to help advertise the event and get people involved from posters to flyers and more. Event signage For the day of the event, choose from hallway directional signs, in-room signage designating donation area, refreshment station, etc. Your Central Blood Bank expert can help advise you as to what will work best.

GOOD HEALTH. Sure donating blood is good for local patients in need. But it s also good for the donor. For starters, Central Blood Bank ensures every student that shows up to donate gets a free mini-physical that gives them important health information. It s quick. It s easy. And it s totally confidential. INSTANT BLOOD TEST RESULTS: 3 ways your blood saves lives Temperature Blood pressure 1 Red Blood Cells are administered to replenish blood loss and are only good for 42 days. Pulse Iron (anemia/iron overload) BLOOD TEST RESULTS UPON REQUEST: Total cholesterol Sickle cell 2 Other blood disorders Platelets give those with leukemia and other cancers a chance to live, and can be stored for only five days. 3 Plasma is mainly used for burn victims and can be kept frozen and stored for up to one year. QUICK TIP 4 Never donate hungry, thirsty or sleepy. Remind students to get adequate nourishment and a good night s sleep before donating blood.

GOOD SPIRIT. What if the life of someone you know depended on it? Giving blood can be so much more than just a community service project. It can be an opportunity for students and teachers to work together, inspire each other and save lives. RALLY AROUND THE CAUSE. Get everyone involved. From the drama club to the football team to the student council, student groups are the lifeblood of your school and can set the tone of your blood program. Be a part of it. Connect your blood donation program to premier events, whether it s the school dance, homecoming game or a spring break sendoff. So it s not just a one-day thing; it s part of your culture. Lead by example. When teachers and staff donate blood, it has a huge effect. It is one more way teachers can make a difference in the lives of their students and their community. BY DONATING REGULARLY FROM THE AGE OF 17, 1 STUDENT COULD SAVE OVER 1,000 LIVES WITHIN THEIR LIFETIME.

Central Blood Bank thanks you for taking the lead in making your school s blood donation program something to be proud of, and for helping save lives in our community all year long.

A DIVERSE BLOOD SUPPLY When you make a blood donation with Central Blood Bank you could be saving the life of a family member, friend or neighbor in your community. Your blood is priceless to an individual in need of repeat blood transfusions. The more similar the blood is to their own, the more likely they are to avoid medical complications and live a healthy life. It may sound easy but finding someone with the same blood type can be difficult. And for people with rare blood types, finding a match can be like finding a needle in a haystack. Although we re fortunate to live in a culturally diverse community, not enough of us are donating blood to support everyone. For this reason, we need to come together as a community and be part of the effort to increase the number of available blood donors from all ethnic groups. GIVE LOCAL. THE BLOOD YOU DONATE COULD SAVE THE LIFE OF SOMEONE JUST LIKE YOU.

A DIVERSE BLOOD SUPPLY Be a hero you have the power to help patients in need in your community as each blood donation can save up to three lives. Please donate blood today. DID YOU KNOW? When repeated or large volumes of blood transfusions are needed to treat serious medical conditions such as sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, heart disease, kidney disease, cancer or trauma, finding someone with the same blood type leads to a better medical outcome. African American, Native American, Alaskan Native, Pacific Island, Asian, South Asian, Hispanic/Latino, East European, and Northern Europeans are just some of the ethnic groups that have a need for rare blood types and rely on matched blood to avoid serious complications. Less than 1% of eligible African Americans donate blood. Sickle cell disease is the most common inherited blood condition among African Americans. Sickle cell patients may need multiple blood transfusions. Sickle cell disease affects more than 72,000 Americans, primarily those of African descent, or about 1 in 500. Hispanics have a higher proportion of O negative blood than other groups. O negative is critical to saving lives in emergencies where many pints of blood are needed in a short period of time.. Additional information can be found at America's Blood Centers:

DONOR ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES. Types of donations: Whole blood: The most common type of blood donation, in which approximately a pint of whole blood is donated. Double red (2RBC): An apheresis donation that allows donors to safely donate twice the number of red cells than a traditional whole blood donation. Common medications that are acceptable: antacids, birth control, diuretics, pain medication (in most cases), thyroid medication and vitamins. Common medications that may require further questions: antibiotics (wait one day after taking), oral accutane (wait one month after taking) For the most current guidelines or for answers to questions about eligibility with respect to age, weight or medical conditions, contact the contact Central Blood Bank MEDICAL HELP DESK AT DONORS-1 EXT OR 7035.

GETTING READY TO DONATE It s important to us that donors have a pleasant blood donation experience. And to help make sure they do, here are a few easy ways to prepare: EAT: Two hours before the appointment, have a healthy meal that includes iron-rich foods (red meat, green leafy vegetables and iron-fortified cereals). On-site snacks are not a substitute. Avoid chewing gum, mints or candy before or during your donation. DRINK: One-hour before donating, drink plenty of noncaffeinated, non-alcoholic beverages such as water, juice or Gatorade. After the mini-physical, but before donation, drink at least another eight ounces of juice, water other beverages provided by the blood center. REST: The night before the drive, get a good night s rest (6-8 hours sleep are recommended).

EATING AN IRON-RICH DIET When a person s body is low in iron, their blood cells decrease and it can prevent them from donating. Eating iron-rich foods helps strengthen iron levels for safe and successful blood donation. It can also help you be less tired and more healthy. THE FOODS BELOW CAN HELP BOOST IRON LEVELS BEFORE DONATION: Red meat Liver Dark green, leafy vegetables Beans (e.g., dried, kidney, pinto, soy) Breakfast cereals with dried fruit Eggs Breads Poultry Tuna Dark molasses Peas Peanut butter Vitamin C-rich foods (e.g., dried fruits such as raisins, apricots, peaches) RECOMMENDED DAILY ALLOWANCE FOR IRON (MG.) Age Males Females years years years 8 8

ANSWERS TO A FEW FAQs. We know you ll get asked some questions regarding blood donation, health and wellness, and even Central Blood Bank. Here are some answers. For more, go to centralbloodbank.org or talk to your account manager. Q. How long will the actual donation process take? A. The actual donation takes about minutes. The entire donation process, from registration to post-donation refreshments, takes about 1 hour. Q. How will my blood be used? A. Blood donations are separated into 3 components: Red blood cells, Platelets and Plasma. Platelets are used for cancer and leukemia patients. Plasma is mainly used for burn victims. Q. How much time does it take for my body to replace the blood I donated? A. Not long at all. The volume of fluids will adjust within a few hours of your donation. The red blood cells will be replaced within a few weeks. Q. If I have a cold or the flu, can I donate blood? A. In order to donate, Central Blood Bank requires that you be in generally good health (symptom free) and recommends that you are feeling well. It is for the safety of you and the recipient. Q. If I just received a flu shot, can I donate blood? A. Yes. There is no waiting period to donate after receiving a flu shot.
