1 Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated Zeta Zeta Chapter Post Office Box 599 Dolton, Illinois Web: Scholarship KAREN LYNNE HARRIS Memorial Scholarship ZETA PHI BETA SORORITY, INCORPORATED ZETA PHI BETA SORORITY, INCORPORATED was founded January 16, 1920 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. by five collegiate women on the ideals of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood and Finer Womanhood. This organization is the only sorority constitutionally bound to a brother organization, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was the first to establish the following: auxiliary groups for girls 4 17 years of age, chapters in Africa and a national headquarters with a full-time paid staff. A community conscious, action oriented organization, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is affiliated with the following nationally renowned organizations: the National Pan-Hellenic Council, NCNW, NAACP, National Urban League, and has a more than 30 year partnership with the March of Dimes. ZETA ZETA CHAPTER Zeta Zeta Chapter, originally chartered in 1926, was re-chartered on October 3, 1987 as the result of thirtythree graduate and professional women (with educational backgrounds that include: bachelors, masters, doctoral and law degrees) in the Dolton, Illinois area. These women brought a wealth of information and resources from their undergraduate Zeta experiences to assist in making this new chapter one to be reckoned with. Since its inception, Zeta Zeta chapter is proud of the following accomplishments: upholding a rich tradition of sisterhood, having members to serve in various elected and appointed positions on all levels in the sorority and to instill within our youth auxiliaries the importance of a quality education, having respect for others and oneself, and to be proud of our rich heritage. Zeta Zeta Chapter provides service to various charitable organizations and holds annual programs in accordance with the National Organization of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. KAREN LYNNE HARRIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP KAREN LYNNE HARRIS, a charter member of Zeta Zeta chapter held the sorority in a very high regard (and was an active and financial supporter of the organization) since joining on April 16, 1977 on the campus of Illinois State University. KAREN LYNNE HARRIS was born into eternity on September 22, 1998 and in her memory, Zeta Zeta Chapter awards annually a college scholarship to a female high school senior who holds a high standard for academics. Attached you will find an application for the KAREN LYNNE HARRIS Memorial Scholarship. Please photocopy and forward this application to members of the graduating class who meet the following criteria: 1) Female 2) Resident in the Chicago land area (Chicago and its surrounding suburbs) and 3) has a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better. The deadline for scholarship applications to be postmarked is May 2nd, The winners will be notified no later than May 30th and the scholarship will be awarded no later than June 28th. Applicants are under no obligation to become members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated or any of its auxiliary groups. Personal Statement Your personal statement should be limited to 2 pages, typed, double spaced, Arial, font size 12. Your personal statement shall reflect your thoughts regarding education, the state of the world today, why you should be selected to receive a scholarship and how you will make an impact on society. 2. Recommendation letters Two letters of recommendation that may come from a teacher or counselor, other professional adult (not a family member), or (preferred not required) an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. 3. Copy of Official High School Transcript 4. Copy of Intended College Acceptance Letter 5. A recent photograph of you Page 4 of 5
