William French Smith decides that there are no grounds for prosecuting national security adviser Richard Allen for accepting $1,000 in cash in connection with a Japanese journalist s interview with Nancy Regan. President Reagan issues an executive order expanding the power of U.S. intelligence (The CIA) to mount some kinds of covert operations inside the United States, to step up surveillance of American citizens abroad and to infiltrate organizations in this country. President Reagan and his top advisers brace for a deeper and longer recession than they anticipated but will stick by their plans without any relief programs. President Reagan rejects the denial by Col Moammar Kadafi that Libyan terrorists have been sent to the United States to kill government leaders. I wouldn t believe a word he says. We have the evidence and he knows it. The Federal Reserve Board lowers its lending rate to banks to 12% from 13%. The action wasn t taken to bring the discount rate into better alignment with sortterm rates that have been prevailing recently in the market. President Reagan tells Teamsters Union leaders that he is considering a change in policy to allow fired air traffic controllers to get other federal jobs. He is not considering putting the air controllers back in the towers. It s ruled that actress Natalie Wood slipped and drowned accidentally while trying to enter an inflatable boat to leave the yacht where her husband, actor Robert Wagner and her film co-star, Christopher Walken, were arguing. Ms. Wood had a blood alcohol level of.14 and it was assumed she was slightly intoxicated. It s the second major Hollywood death due to alcohol in recent weeks.

5 Radio news ABC Radio releases programming details for its new Rock radio Network set to hit the air January 4 with 50 radio stations. In its first year, Rock Radio Network plans to offer 16 two-hour rock concerts with the first to be broadcast in March. WLS-FM s Steve Dahl, well known for his anti-disco antics a few years ago, will host a weekly rock radio comedy show and there ll be a daily comedy show. Also, The King Biscuit Flower Hour which has been a part of the ABC FM Radio Network for the past year, will now be part of the new network. Other programs include Rocknotes hosted by WPLJ-FM personality Pat St. John, Rock and Roll Legends hosted by WPLJ jock Jimmy Fink and a Hollywood feature hosted by Gayle Murphy.
