1 Mr Ased Ali Chronic UTI clinic FAQS Chronic UTI Info Factsheet Series
2 Mr Ased Ali is a Consultant Urologist at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals specialising in cystitis, urinary and biofilm infection, incontinence, pelvic floor weakness and urinary symptoms due to bladder problems (frequency, urgency, problems emptying, getting up at night, leakage, pain, etc.) He is also interested in male reconstructive urology, including treatment of erectile problems and incontinence with artificial urinary sphincter after prostate surgery. He qualified from The University of Manchester, with subsequent surgical training in the Northwest of England and Higher Urological training in Yorkshire and Northeast of England. He undertook part of his sub-specialty training in Female Urology and Urogynaecology at Duke University, North Carolina, USA as well as The Centre for Pelvic floor at University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. Additionally, he completed a Royal College of Surgeons approved fellowship in Female Urology and Reconstructive Surgery at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne. He is dual trained as both a surgeon (awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, FRCS) and as a scientist (awarded an immunology doctorate, PhD) and is very keen for patient to have access to the latest treatments and technologies available for bladder problems. He has numerous peer-reviewed publications and has published book chapters on urological infections. He also presents regularly at The European Association of Urology where he has won multiple awards. Additionally, he is a member of the Medical Advisory Panel for Bladder Health UK, the largest UK charity for bladder problems and serves as the President of the Yorkshire and Humberside Urostomy Association. He also holds academic positions at both Hll York Medical School and University of Newcastle with involvement in research and teaching for urologists and other healthcare professionals who help manage bladder problems. Location of clinics: Mr Ali has three private urology clinics as well as one NHS. The private urology clinics are located at: ü Spire Elland, Huddersfield (alternate Monday morning) ü Spire Longlands, Dewsbury (alternate Wednesday afternoon) ü Spire Methley Park, Leeds (alternate Tuesday evening) Private consultations will last 30 minutes. His NHS clinic is based at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield. Referrals to his NHS clinic can be done through a consultant or GP. The clinic code for referrals is: Pinderfields Neuro-urology clinic 1924A. Please ensure your GP or consultant specifically requests that you are seen by Mr Ali rather than one of his colleagues. 2
3 Diagnosis of patients with Chronic UTI Through his collaborative work with Dr Catriona Anderson at Focus Medical Clinic, Mr Ali can offer each private patient he sees a broth culture and will treat based on these results alongside the symptoms described to him and the patient s full medical history. For patients within the NHS, it is not possible to offer the broth cultures directly as it's a paid non-nhs service. Such a service cannot be offered or promoted to NHS patients as it's considered a conflict of interest. It prevents clinicians using NHS clinics to promote a non-nhs treatments. BUT if a patient has asked about a non-nhs treatment, it is possible to tell them about it and if 'separately' they wished to arrange a broth culture through one of the private clinics, the results can be brought to the NHS clinic. If necessary, patients need only see him for two private consults, one to discuss their history of infection and secondly to discuss the results following the broth analysis of the urine. He is happy for patients to keep costs down and then treat through their GP based on the test results provided and his recommendations by letter to their GP. If symptoms persist, repeated cultures however must be organized through consultation with him so that symptoms can be managed directly. Do I need to have investigative tests if I have already had these? No, provided you can bring to your first consult, letters from previous consultants outlining investigations and results then it will not be necessary to have further invasive tests unless he feels it is appropriate or there is a familial history of renal/bladder cancer. By knowing the name of previous consultants, it will enable him to contact that specialist for the clinical results of previous tests. It will also benefit patients to bring a brief written outline of their bladder symptom history and this can be sent in advance of the first consult. How are patients treated? He is happy to give high dose antibiotics to appropriate patients on recurring 6-week courses. This applies whether seeing him privately or on the NHS. However antibiotic prescription must be carefully monitored with repeat appointments (at least every 3-months) to check for efficacy. Patients must always advise of whether they have experienced any adverse reactions to medications in the past plus whether they have allergies/concurrent medical conditions. 3
4 In between consultations is it possible to contact him by ? Very limited resource will be available. This will be offered for failure of antibiotic therapy or adverse reactions and to make follow up or new appointments. His surgical work means that he has limited access to and will not be able to offer a comprehensive service. Will he be able to treat paediatric patients? Mr Ali is not a paediatric consultant and therefore cannot offer treatment to patients under the age of 16. If I have other gynaecological issues, can these be treated alongside a cuti? Yes. His subspecialty interest is female Urology so he also deals with other gynaecological issues. He also works very closely with local gynaecologists, particularly in relation to problems with endometriosis and more recently, mesh removal. Pinderfields hospital is a regional specialist centre for both. Can International patients be seen? Yes What are the costs? Charges are 150 for new patients and 110 for review. A broth culture is 60. He is registered with all the major UK health insurers.
