1 Accel-Heal An effective treatment for healing leg ulcers Guide for Clinicians
2 Accel-Heal an innovative treatment for healing leg ulcers Leg ulcers are commonly slow to heal with many ulcers still remaining unhealed at six months or longer. Accel-Heal brings clinicians a tool that stimulates an ulcer to heal. Applied alongside standard care, Accel-Heal is a 12 day treatment delivered by a medical device that promotes healing in leg ulcers through the use of electroceutical energy. How does it work Developed and designed with ease of clinical application and patient comfort in mind, Accel-Heal delivers a sequence of pre-programmed, low level and sub-sensory electrical energy through the skin surface. This helps to reduce the inflammation and improve cell migration to the ulcer site resulting in tissue repair. Supported by a wealth of clinical evidence, Accel-Heal improves treatment outcomes and the quality of life and wellbeing for patients by: Promoting and stimulating healing 1,5 Helping to reduce pain 1,2,3,4 Reducing exudate 1,2,3,4 Reducing oedema 2,3,4
3 How to use Accel-Heal Accel-Heal is simple and easy to use without the need to change your patients treatment plan. The Accel-Heal 12 day treatment consists of six, 48 hour disposable units and connected electrode pads. The electrode pads should be applied to healthy skin either side of the wound and then connected to the Accel-Heal unit. The unit is then activated using a simple on/off switch, tucked into the external dressing and left to work for 48 hours. After 48 hours the unit will automatically turn itself off. A new unit should then be attached to the electrodes, with the used unit disposed of safely. The units should be applied consecutively during the 12 day treatment course. It is wearable and comfortable to sleep on, with each unit measuring 7cm X 4cm X 2cm, and can be placed underneath dressings and bandages. It is recommended that Accel-Heal is used on leg ulcers that will comfortably fit under a 10cm X 10cm dressing and that have not progressed satisfactorily after 6 weeks of treatment.
4 A cost effective solution for healing leg ulcers Caring for wounds and associated illnesses costs the NHS 5.3 billion a year. The annual financial burden to the NHS caused by leg ulcers, including diabetic foot ulcers, is 2.3 billion and the burden is increasing year on year as many ulcers do not heal. 7 Unhealed leg ulcers account for 75% of the annual cost of leg ulcers with each unhealed leg ulcer costing the NHS over 5,600 a year. 7 Accel-Heal is a 12 day, fixed cost treatment that is available for clinical prescribing with a reimbursable cost of 240. Patients typically experience a marked reduction in pain and exudate during the course of treatment and wound healing within 3 months. 1,2,3,4,5 1 Guest JF, et al.
