2 Use of Eye Drops Antibiotic, steroid, and lubricating eye drops greatly reduce a patient's risk of developing complications after LASIK and PRK surgery. HLVC will provide all the medications the patient will need to successfully recover from the laser vision correction procedure.

3 Pre-op Medications Dr. Ravi s patients start Vigamox and Maxidex QID one day prior to surgery On the day of surgery, prior to treatment, patients are offered Ativan 1 2 mg, depending upon their anxiety.

4 Intra-op Drops Alcaine is used prior to and during surgery. After LASIK, Dr. Ravi uses Vigamox and Pred Forte. Dr. Varma uses Zymar and Maxidex. After PRK, Dr. Ravi uses Vigamox and Flarex. Dr. Varma uses Zymar and Flarex.

5 Post-Op Drops for ilasik Maxidex to be started on the day of surgery Dr. Ravi 6 times a day for three days (including day of surgery), then 4 times per day for the rest of the week Dr. Varma hourly for first two days after surgery, then 4 times per day for the rest of the week Antibiotic drop to be started on the day of surgery Dr. Ravi Vigamox; tid for 1 week Dr. Varma Zymar; qid for 1 week I-Med I-drop PUR to be started on the day of surgery To be used at least 4 times a day but the patient can use more often if the eye feels dry up to every hour. After the first month, any preserved lubricating drop may be used

6 LASIK Post-op Pain Medication After LASIK, some amount of discomfort is common, though it s easy to manage with over-the-counter pain relievers. Patients usually will not require much pain medication as they recover.

7 Post-op Drops for PRK Antibiotic instructions Dr. Ravi - Vigamox tid for 1 week, starting on surgery day Dr. Varma - Zymar qid for 1 week, starting day after surgery Flarex is started the day after surgery. Patient to follow this taper: 1 drop 4 times per day for one month, 1 drop 3 times per day for two weeks, 1 drop 2 times per day for two weeks, then 1 drop 1 time per day for one week. I-Med I-drop PUR is started the day after surgery Use at least 4 times a day but the patient can use more often if the eye feels dry up to every hour. After the first month, any preserved lubricating drop may be used.

PRK Post-op Pain Medication After PRK, a bandage contact lens is placed on the eye to protect the cornea. The patient will experience some pain in the immediate post-operative period.

Dilute Tetracaine is provided for patient use if the pain is extreme on day one. Toradol or Tylenol 3 is prescribed for the 2-3 days following PRK for pain relief. Restoril for sleeping is provided for the patient.

9 Lubricating Eye Drops Horizon is now supplying patient with I-Med i-drop Pur, rather than Hylo. The delivery system for the i-drop Pur is easier for the patients to use. The drops are non-preserved and holds the same amount as Hylo in a smaller bottle. idrop Pur is preservative-free and sterile for 6 months after opening. Contains silver in the delivery system to kill any bacteria. idrop Pur contains Hyaluronic Acid as a lubricant, as does Hylo, but i-drop Pur has more HA, which means better lubricating/hydrating effect on the cornea. i-drop Pur ($11.25) is much less than Hylo ($28). Both clinics will carry Hylo for those patients that prefer that drop.

10 Questions for the surgeons? If you have any questions regarding the post-op course of your patient, please note it on the post-op form and send to HLVC. The surgeons will address the question and the answer will be sent back to you.

11 Pre-op Dry eye? In preparing your patient for refractive surgery, assess the cornea for dry eye. Dry eye should be controlled prior to surgery. Recommendations for treatment of dry eye may include lubricating eye drops, hot compresses, OTC nutritional supplements, humidifiers and/or punctum plugs.

12 The most current post-op instruction sheets your patients will receive on their day of surgery are included in your folders. Call the clinics if you have any questions about your patient s individual care.
