1 Bloomer High School Newsletter Bloomer School District website: Chad Steinmetz, High School Principal From the Principal s Desk End of 1 st Trimester Final Exams November, 2017 Inside this issue: As we head into the month of November, we are approaching the end of our first trimester at Bloomer High School. We will have final exams on the last two days of the trimester Wednesday, November 29, and Thursday, November 30. Students will have final exams in periods 2 and 4 on Wednesday and in periods 1, 3, and 5 on Thursday. Report cards will be mailed home during the first week of December, and the 15-school day extra-curricular ineligibility period for students receiving a failing or incomplete grade will begin on Tuesday, December 5. It is important to remember that trimester grades are permanent grades that go on a student s transcript. Please reinforce the importance of preparing for final exams with your children. This experience helps students prepare for post-secondary success. In conjunction with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction s Agenda 2017, it is our goal to help all of our students prepare for post-secondary success. This includes students who will be attending some type of post-secondary education, students who will be entering the military, and students who will directly enter the workforce. 2 Blackhawk Notes 2 Jason Steinmetz, Activities Director Fall Sports Winding Down As we enter into the month of November, we want to recognize the accomplishments of all of our Fall Sports athletes and coaches. Coach Brian Flynn and the Girls Tennis Team continued to show great improvements this year and we look forward to a great 2018 season. Coaches Char Kelley, Jodi Aubart and the Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams had a memorable season that saw many PR s late into the season, including a 2nd place finish for the boys in the HON Conference meet for the third consecutive year. The boys cross country team placed 3rd out of 16 teams at the sectional meet, with Alex Conrad making it to state as an individual. Coach John Post and the Blackhawk Football Team finished another strong campaign winning the HON Conference title and qualifying for the playoffs for the 13th consecutive year. Finally, Coach Liz Bohl s Volleyball Team had a great year, winning the HON Conference title outright for the third consecutive year and making it to the Regional Finals. Best wishes to our senior athletes and thank you for your years of commitment to our athletic programs. Winter Sports to Begin Our winter sports teams will begin practice in the month of November. Our girls basketball teams begin practice on Monday, November 6th. Our boys basketball teams and wrestling teams begin practice on Monday, November 13th. A reminder to any student-athletes interested in winter sports in order to be eligible to participate and begin practice, the following items must be filed in the high school office: 1. Physical or alternate year card filled out by physician or nurse. 2. $50 participation fee. 3. Activities Code signed by student-athlete and parent. 4. WIAA Athletic Eligibility Information Bulletin signed by student-athlete and parent. 5. Athletic Emergency Form completed and signed by parent/guardian. 6. Concussion Information / Agreement Form signed by Parent / Student a new form must be signed for every sport. Wisconsin Sports Concussion Collaborative (WSCC) Bloomer High School will again be offering ImPACT testing for our student-athletes. This is a baseline test is used for evaluating and treating concussions. Fall sport athletes were offered this test in August at the start of the fall sports season. For our winter sport athletes, the test will be offered at Bloomer High School on Wednesday, November 1, 3:30. It will be run by Jeff Ehrhard, our athletic trainer. 3 Blackhawk Notes 3 Procedures for When Students are Absent 1. If a student will be absent from school, parent/guardian should call the main office ( , option 2, option 1) on the day of the absence to report and excuse the absence. 2. A student whose parent/guardian did not call the school must have their parent/guardian send a note or excusing the absence on the day he/she returns to school, between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. The office will issue a pass to that student to present to all of his/her teachers. 3. The written excuse must be presented to the office within 3 school days of the absence or the absence will be considered unexcused. 4. All unexcused absences will result in one (1) detention per class period. 5. Unexcused absence- The act of being absent from school for part or all of a school day without permission from parents/guardians or school administrators. Included are absences which do not comply with the School District of Bloomer s attendance policy. 6. The school will notify parents/guardians of unexcused absences by phone and/or State law empowers parents/guardians to pre-excuse their child from school for ten (10) days per year for any reason as long as the school is notified of such absence in writing and in advance of the absence. A pre-excused absence form is required for such absences. Attendance Infractions 1. Leaving campus without permission from the Principal or office secretary (except during lunch) will be considered an unexcused absence. If a student needs to leave school for any reason during the school day they must report to the office before leaving. 2.. Reporting late (up to 5 minutes) or unprepared for class will result in a tardy. The following consequences will be applied on a trimester basis. Students will receive a verbal warning for the first tardy in each class of a given trimester. Additional tardies in all classes will apply toward the consequences below: 2nd-4th offense- One (1) detention 5th/subsequent offenses- one-half (½) day in school suspension Reporting absence via SKYWARD APP New to Skyward and the Skyward APP at the High School level is the ability to report a student absent instead of a phone call or . This option allows you to log in, report the absence and have it excused without further communication needed. The report not only adds it to Skyward but it sends a confirmation to both you and Mr. Jason Steinmetz as notification. To report a student absent thru this APP, please do the following: *Log in *Under student s name, click on ATTENDANCE *Click on ADD ABSENCE REQUEST *Enter the following: start date End date All day? (Check if yes) Reason: drop down box with options Comment: if needed *SUBMIT Challenge Empower Achieve

4 Blackhawk Notes 4 From the Student Services Office Senior Planning Conferences are now being held at BHS. These conferences are specifically designed for students and parents to prepare a postsecondary plan for the student. Please contact Mrs. Luzinski at ext to schedule your conference. Juniors and Seniors can now register for Chippewa Valley Technical Colleges Career Tour in student services. The tour will take place on November 14 th and students should plan to leave school at 8:30am and return at 1:30pm. Career tours will run from 9am -12:pm and the bus will be stopping for students to get lunch on the way back to BHS. Representatives from the following colleges will be available to meet with interested BHS students in November: Marines November 7 th UW- Superior November 15 th UW Eau Claire November 16 th Army November 16 th UW River Falls December 13

7 Cold and Flu Season is here Do you or your child feel under the weather? Can you tell if it is a cold or the flu? Here are some guidelines that might help you to figure it out. You may also wish to contact your health care provider and ask about an antiviral medication (which needs to be within the first hours of onset of symptoms). 8 Tis the Season for cough, sneezes, sore throats and runny noses. As you may be aware of, we here in Bloomer have seen a large number of cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease HFMD is moderately contagious viral infection. It is spread from person to person by direct contact with nose and throat discharges, saliva, fluid from blisters, or the stool of infected persons. A person is most contagious during the first week of the illness. HFMD is transmitted similar to a cold or flu virus. The best prevention is to do good hand washing and covering nose and mouth with sneezing and coughing. This behavior is taught and encouraged here at school and we hope that your family continues it at home and when out in the community. Adults don t usually show the symptoms of HFMD, but could still transmit it to others. Always wash hands before eating, avoid rubbing your eyes, picking your nose or otherwise putting anything in your mouth. This is a good habit to help prevent the spread of any viral or bacterial infection. Symptoms of HFMD are fever, sores in the mouth and a skin rash. HFMD begins with a mild fever, poor appetite, malaise (feeling vaguely unwell), and often a sore throat. One or 2 days after the fever begins, painful sores can develop in the mouth. They begin as small red spots that blister and then often become ulcers. The sores are usually located on the tongue, gums, and inside of the cheeks. The skin rash develops over 1 to 2 days, with flat or raised red spots and sometimes with blisters. The skin rash usually does not itch and is usually on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. It may also appear on the buttocks or genitalia and has also been seen on the legs, arms and torso. A person with HFMD may exhibit none to all of the symptoms. As with any illness, please keep your child home during and for 24 hours after he or she has been running a fever, or if they have poor appetite, feeling ill, sore throat, pain or open sores. Please be mindful of others as this and most infections are the most contagious during the initial onset and while they are running a fever or feeling sick. We have several children in or closely related to people in the district that do not have the immune system to battle even minor infections. If you feel that you or your child is showing these symptoms please contact your health care provider and follow their advice on how to ease discomfort and how long they need to be out of school. If you have questions or concerns, the CDC (Center for Disease Control) has good information on it at
