Why vaccinate cats? To prevent severe diseases with high mortality: panleucopenia, FelV To prevent disease with high morbidity: calicivirus To prevent disease with high contagiousity: herpesvirus To prevent a disease with a zoonotic risk: rabies

Ajuvanted free vaccine range Component specifically designed for cats Updated strains to face field pressure Short onset of immunity Long lasting efficacy Compliance with vaccination guidelines recommendations for core vaccination An opportunity to give confidence in vaccination

PUREVAX ADJUVANT FREE VACCINE RANGE

WHAT IS AN ADJUVANT? Adjuvant = to help An adjuvant is a substance that can be co-administered with a vaccine to accelerate, prolong, or enhance the quality of an immune response to the antigen.

EFFECTS OF ADJUVANTS To induce a local reaction that mimics a local infection. The subcutaneous irritation induced by adjuvants local inflammation, Lymphocytes migration from the blood vessels Migration of dendritic cells and macrophage Increase of the lymphatic flow

ADJUVANTED VACCINES IN CATS Major concern about rabies vaccination, mainly in cats suspected link with fibrosarcoma Injection procedures, not only vaccination, induce chronic inflammation which may turn into fibrosarcoma Despite Vaccination Induced Fibrosarcoma (VIS) remain quite rare (>1 case per vaccination), risk is present Consequently: experts / vaccination guidelines recommend the use of non-adjuvanted vaccines whenever possible

BACKGROUNDS Many scientists / publications are supporting the possible link between adjuvanted vaccines and fibrosarcoma

BACKGROUNDS FeLV and Rabies adjuvanted vaccines and repeated vaccination appear to be particularly at risk for the development of fibrosarcoma

BACKGROUNDS Non-adjuvanted vaccines, particularly the Canarypox vectored vaccines, are much less likely to induce chronic inflammation which could lead to fibrosarcoma

KEY POINTS Vaccine-associated fibrosarcoma remains the single most significant vaccine adverse event facing veterinarians today. Chronic inflammation in skin and muscle, associated with tissue trauma as well as the administration of adjuvantcontaining vaccines, is the current working hypothesis in the pathogenesis of these tumors. The use of non-adjuvanted vaccines have been shown to reduce or, typically, to eliminate inflammation associated with injection

ADJUVANTED-FREE VACCINE RANGE Objectives Limit inflammation due to vaccine components keeping the best efficacy against feline core pathogens agents It requires specific strategies for some vaccines components where live vaccines strains may be dangerous to use: Feline Calicivirus (FCV) Feline Leukaemia (FeLV) Rabies

ADJUVANTED-FREE VACCINE RANGE Reaction limited to lymphoid cells (immune response) No significant histiofibroblastic or myofibroblastic reaction

ADJUVANTED-FREE VACCINE RANGE Confirmed in a multicentric comparative trial

ADJUVANTED-FREE VACCINE RANGE

ADJUVANTED-FREE VACCINE RANGE Take away messages Use non-adjuvanted vaccines when available Practice SC injection in an area poor in fat sub cutaneous tissue Modify injection site between PV1 & PV2 Remove vaccine from the fridge few minutes before utilization

PUREVAX INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES

CANARYPOX TECHNOLOGY PUREVAX: specific and unique technology Canarypox vectorized virus Effiacy of a live virus, without adjuvant Combining safety of an inactivated vaccine & efficacy of a modified live vaccine

WHY? CANARYPOX TECHNOLOGY It is not possible to use a modified live retrovirus as vaccine candidate Such a vaccine would integrate the provirus into the cat s genome. Anti retroviral immunity needs a strong «Cellular immunity component» (cf. Oswald Jarett), and a good humoral immunity to destroy circulating virions Inactivated vaccines against FeLV need to be strongly adjuvanted to induce immunity.

CANARYPOX TECHNOLOGY

PUREVAX FeLV The preventable fraction obtained with canarypox-felv is superior to that obtained with an adjuvanted inactivated vaccine

PUREVAX RABIES Rabies = still a threat in Europe Vaccination is the best way to protect animal and human populations

PUREVAX RABIES Strong serological response soon after one injection of primary vaccination Efficacy with 3 years duration of immunity demonstrated by challenge

CALICIVIRUS STRAINS The scientific community strongly requires: > Newly adapted strains > Stable vaccines ( Killed / inactivated)

CALICIVIRUS STRAINS OBJECTIVES Update vaccine vs field strains Not using a live attenuated strain to avoid any risk of mutation from a vaccinal strain (risk linked to any RNA virus) Not use of adjuvants Inducing at least 1 year duration of immunity validated by challenge

CALICIVIRUS STRAINS

CALICIVIRUS STRAINS

CALICIVIRUS STRAINS Significant decrease in clinical symptoms when vaccine strains are combined

CALICIVIRUS STRAINS Bivalent synergistic strains for powerful crossprotection Inactivated reversion to virulence not possible Licensed claim for reducing viral shedding

PUREVAX EFFICACY

PUREVAX EFFICACY Immediate efficacy and duration of immunity demonstrated by vaccination/challenge for all components Short onset of immunity (1 to 2 weeks) Duration of immunity: Up to 3 years for RCP and rabies Calicivirus component with updated strains Canarypox Vector technology

ONSET OF IMMUNITY PUREVAX rapid protection with 1 week onset of immunity for core RCP components

DURATION OF IMMUNITY Panleulocopenia and rabies already had 3 years duration of immunity PUREVAX got 3 years duration of immunity claim for Herpesvirosis and Calicivirosis components in February Demonstration that Merial supports vaccination guidelines and is a leader in feline vaccination. Reinforce the image of efficacy of the PUREVAX line

DURATION OF IMMUNITY

DURATION OF IMMUNITY

GUIDELINE VACCINATION PROTOCOLS FPV Adult Indoor Cats One immunization, boost every 3 years or more Adult Outdoor Cats One immunization, boost every 3 years or more Adult Rescue Shelter Cats Booster vaccinations at 3 yearly intervals Adult Breeding Cats Boost queens 3 yearly or annually before bredding if low MDA is a concern FHV One immunization, boost every 3 years One immunization, boost annually Annually Boost queens annually and before breeding FCV FeLV Chlamydophila felis Rabies One immunization, boost every 3 years One immunization, boost annually Annually Boost every 2-3 years after the age of 3 years Annually Depending on legislation Boost queens annually and before breeding Note: Even if Merial promotes these guidelines, supportive data are not currently available, explaining discrepancies in between PUREVAX SPCs on some recommendations.

PUREVAX RANGE - COMPLETELY ADJUVATED-FREE FOR BETTER LOCAL TOLERANCE - INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY - BIVALENT INACTIVATED CALICIVIRUS STRAINS FOR THE MOST UP-TO-DATE PROTECTION - RAPID ONSET OF IMMUNITY AND LONG DURATION OF PROTECTION - COMPLIANCE WITH GUIDELINE FOR CORE VACCINATION

PUREVAX HOW TO CONVINCE CAT OWNERS TO USE PUREVAX?

HOW TO CONVINCE CAT OWNERS TO USE PUREVAX? Positioning: for veterinary keen to offer the best in terms of safety and efficacy PUREVAX is the most safe innovative powerful vaccine among those available on the market Reassure cat owners that will give the best for their cat Confidence in vaccination Loyalty

1/ CONFIDENCE IN VACCINATION How many cats in your practice? How many cats are vaccinated? How many cats are vaccinated regurlaly?

VACCINATION: VARIATION IN FONCTION OF SPECIES AND AGE On % of average, vaccination out of dogs And out of 10 cats Young Adult Senior Young Adult Senior are DOGS vaccinated CATS Source : TNS France for CEESA-12/2002

WHY PET S OWNER STOP VACCINATION? Technicity? NO! Price? NO! Communication Information on diseases and vaccines available Exposition/ risk for his animal Quality and Security of vaccinal protection

VALUING PREVENTION S CONSULTATION AND VACCINATION Vaccination is the first reason for consultation Why have you visit your vet during these last 12 months? For Vaccination > 84% Dogs owners > 71% Cats owners Étude Bio sat, Juillet 2006

QUIZZ FOR WAITING ROOM The pet s Owner Is busy Feels listened Understand better Dicovers new needs The vet Better identified customer expectations Capitalise his time for maximum customer satisfaction Promote the increase of pets owner requets

EX QUESTIONNAIRE

2/ LOYALTY PRICE - COMMUNICATION Customer s affective answer or behavior, in the presence of competition "Fidelity = lack of opportunity! "

PRICE LEVEL AND LOYALTY Price level as perceive by pet s owner Indice de Fidélité Globale Mauvais Bon..is linked to vet s practice loyalty Niveau de prix tel que perçu par client Source : QUALIVET 3972 répondants

PRICING METHOD. Competition Cost + Margin Demand (Psychologic price) Positioning Positioning: for veterinary keen to offer the best in terms of safety and efficacy, PUREVAX is the most innovative powerful vaccine among those available on the market Reassure cat owners that will give the best for their cat

THE OBJECTION TO THE PRICE Directly Indirectly Doctor, it s expensive! I will think about that I will talk about that with my unsband Later It s axpensive for only one injection! He haven t done a lot for 30! Vets must earn a lot of money!.

THE OBJECTION TO THE PRICE Common reflex No it is not expensive! You don t understand! What we should do: 1. Welcome/Listen 2. Clarify 3. Answer 4. Check

THE OBJECTION TO THE PRICE Increase perceptible value by increasing perceptible quality Materialize service Itemized billing, checklist, open house, book, brochures Involve clients Follow-up call, new services

Results AAHA 2003 ( Answer I want my vet tells me about all treatment and options to treat my pet, even if I can not pay all 90% I want my vet tells me that on treatment options as it considers appropriate to my abilities 10%
