3 LMSG Guidelines The Leicestershire Medicines Strategy Group (LMSG) acknowledges the benefits of having a Leicestershire Health Community-wide strategy for the prescribing of specialist medicines and the managed entry of new drugs and related technologies. Antibiotics are important medicines for treating bacterial infections in both humans and animals. Antibiotics are losing their effectiveness at an increasing rate. Antibiotic resistance is one of the most significant threats to patients safety in Europe. It is driven by overusing antibiotics and prescribing them inappropriately. To slow down the development of antibiotic resistance it is important to use antibiotics in the right way, to use the right drug, at the right dose, at the right time for the right duration. Antibiotics should be taken as prescribed, never saved for later or shared with others. The LMSH have requested Pharmacists to support this campaign ensuring the following ; Antibiotic prescribing is regularly monitored to ensure prudent prescribing and compliance to antibiotic guidelines. Department of Health s Standing Medical Advisory Committee (SMAC) advice is followed: No prescribing of antibiotics for simple coughs and colds No prescribing of antibiotics for viral sore throats Uncomplicated cystitis in otherwise fit women limit course to 3 days Limit prescribing of antibiotics over the telephone to exceptional cases Advocate patient education regarding the benefits and disadvantages of antimicrobial agent Links to the local guidelines are at; Antibiotic-Policy-and-Guidance-for- Primary-Care.pdf (1) PEG GPs are encouraged to indicate on the prescription if the the patient has an PEG/NG tube. However, you may become aware (e.g. after discussion with the patient or their carer) that they have an NG/ PEG tube in place. The attached leaflet does provide some guidance about factors that need to be considered. Within Leicestershire we have a medicines information service based at the LRI who can assist with queries and advise on the suitability of medicines and preparations via NG/PEG) To submit a query medicines.info@uhl-tr.nhs. uk or call BAPEN: Drug administration via enteral feeding tubes. A guide for GPs and community pharmacists. (2) MTX - community pharmacist should ask to see the patient s monitoring booklet at each dispensing and ensure that the dose prescribed corresponds to the details in the monitoring book. The pharmacist should check the dose that has been prescribed is within the target range and if there has been a dose change since the last prescription dispensed then this is in accordance with the monitoring booklet. A guide for GP s and pharmacists as indicated by the LMSG and_e/de_gp_guide.pdf

5 Morningside Pharmacy Wins Best All Round Pharmacy Chain Award Morningside Pharmacy was awarded the Pharmacy Chain award in the Pharmacy Business Awards 2015 on Wednesday 23rd September The announcement was made at an awards ceremony in London, attended by Ben Gummer MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Care Quality. The Pharmacy Chain Award is awarded to the best all round pharmacy chain and recognises an exceptional level of patient care and customer service throughout its chain, good management systems and a commitment to on-going staff development. The judging panel for the awards said this of Morningside Pharmacy: It s different, something I wasn t expecting. They are very enterprising. You expect this of the big boys. You expect the larger chains to be geared up like that. It s their company profile that engages with staff and gets results. They empower their teams to develop their own business strategy to deliver what s right for their local community. Danesh Gadhia, CEO, Morningside Pharmacy said: We have been serving our local communities for over 25 years and this is great recognition of what we have achieved over the years. We are thrilled to receive this prestigious award and I want to thank all our staff for the great work they do everyday and to our loyal customers.
6 Join Dementia Research Join Dementia Research is a new service that helps people to take part in dementia research studies. It aims to accelerate the pace of dementia research by allowing people with and without dementia to register their interest in studies, helping researchers find the right participants at the right time. The Join Dementia Research website offers a secure and easy way for someone to register their interest, discover studies that interest them, and ultimately connect with researchers to take part in their studies. Anyone aged 18 years or over can sign up themselves, or on behalf of someone else, either by registering online or by contacting the helplines of Alzheimer s Research UK and Alzheimer s Society. Join Dementia Research is a collaboration between the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Alzheimer s Research UK, Alzheimer s Society, Alzheimer Scotland and UCL Partners, and has been funded by the Department of Health and NHS England. All pharmacies in the county are being asked to display posters and leaflets. I ve attached copies of each. If you would like to display copies of the poster in your pharmacy or receive a supply of leaflets, please janice.strand@nihr.ac.uk. Janice is Primary Care Research Delivery Lead for the Clinical Research Network East Midlands. Please do not respond directly to this .
