2 EBOLA FACTS STAY HEALTHY WITH AVMOR WHAT IS EBOLA? Ebola virus disease, is a rare and deadly disease caused by infection with one of the Ebola virus strains (Zaire, Sudan, Bundibugyo, or Tai Forest virus). EBOLA TRANSMISSION Ebola viruses are transmitted through: Direct contact with blood or body fluids of an infected person with symptoms. Exposure to objects that have been contaminated with infected blood or body fluids. WHEN IS THE VIRUS CONTAGIOUS? The virus is contagious when the infected person begins to show symptoms. Symptoms can take from 2 to 21 days to appear. The average incubation period is between 8 and 10 days. Initial symptoms include fever, weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. These are often mistaken for the flu, malaria, etc. The symptoms get worse including: vomiting, diarrhea, internal and external bleeding, skin rashes and purple spots on the skin Once the symptoms appear the person is contagious and has between 6 to 16 days to beat the virus. The death rate is high. 50 to 90% chance of death depending on the strain and access to medical care. If the person gets proper medical care, the chances of survival increase. HOW LONG DOES IT SURVIVE? Ebola virus can survive several hours on hard surfaces. If the fluid remains wet or at room temperature it can survive for days. 8 CLEANING AND DISINFECTING a) Daily cleaning and disinfection of hard, non-porous surfaces should be done. b) Pre-clean all surfaces prior to disinfection. c) As recommended by CDC: Select a disinfectant with non-enveloped virus claims (example: Norovirus, Rotavirus, Adenovirus, Poliovirus). *Non-enveloped viruses are more resistant to disinfectants. d) Use disposable cleaning cloths, mop cloths, and wipes and dispose of these in leak-proof bags. e) Use a rigid waste receptacle designed to support the bag to help minimize contamination of the bag s exterior Be sure to disinfect high touch areas including telephones, keyboards, desks, doorknobs, bed rails, call bells, faucets, flushers, elevator buttons, railings 6

10 EP63 Cleaning Procedure 1 2 Wear protective gloves, gown, goggles or face shield,. and mask or respirator. Dilute product using a dilution control system.. 3. Apply EP63 Lemon Neutral - Neutral Cleaner solution with mop, cloth, brush or spray bottle. or 4. Once soils are loosened, simply mop or wipe with a cloth. 5. Equipment and surfaces subjected to direct food contact must be thoroughly rinsed with potable water after cleaning with this product. 8

12 BALANCE PLUS Disinfection Procedure 1. Wear protective gloves, gown, goggles or face shield, and mask or respirator. 2. Dilute product using a dilution control dispenser. 3. Apply Balance Plus Cleaner Disinfectant solution with a mop or cloth to wet thoroughly. or 4. The treated surfaces must remain wet for 10 minutes. 5. Let air dry. 10

13 HAND HYGIENE Hand hygiene is essential and needs to be performed frequently: Before donning gloves and wearing PPE on entry to the isolation room/area; After any exposure risk or actual exposure with a patient s blood or body fluids; after touching (even potentially) contaminated surfaces, items, or equipment in the patient s surroundings; and After removal of PPE, upon leaving the isolation area. It is important to note that neglecting to perform hand hygiene after removing PPE will reduce or negate any benefits of the PPE. Either an alcohol-based hand rub or soap and running water can be used for hand hygiene Alcohol-based hand rubs should be made available at every point of care (at the entrance and within the isolation rooms and areas); running water, soap, and single use towels should also be always available. 11

16 7T GEL and Foam Procedure 1. Apply 7T (Gel or Foam) to palms of dry hands. 2. Entirely cover hands with product. 3. Rub hands together until product is dry. 14

17 BLOOD AND BODY FLUIDS PROCEDURE This procedure is applicable to spills on a surface such as a tile floor or concrete floor. 1. Notify others working in the area of the hazard present. 2. Prepare your biohazard spill kit and review spill procedure before proceeding with cleanup. 3. Remove spill supplies from kit and line bucket/container with a biohazard bag. (Retrieve a sharps container for disposal of sharps if necessary.) 4. At a minimum, wear two pairs of gloves and splash goggles. 5. If applicable, using mechanical means (i.e. dustpan/broom, tongs), pick up any contaminated sharp items (needles, broken glass, etc.) and place them in an approved sharps container for disposal. 6. Cover the spill with an absorbent material (i.e. Superfine, Clean-up Powder). Take care not to contaminate your shoes or clothing. 7. Remove the absorbent material by using a mechanical means (i.e. dustpan and broom, plastic scrapers) and deposit it along with the mechanical tool into a biohazard bag. Be careful not to contaminate the outside of your spray bottle. 15

Spray the spill area with disinfectant and allow the appropriate contact time, as recommended by the disinfectant manufacturer s instructions (i.e. 10 minute contact time, or as directed by the Technical Data Sheet) 9. Remove residual disinfectant with paper towels. Dispose of the towels in the biohazard bag. 10. Repeat steps 8 and 9 for sufficient disinfection of contaminated surfaces. 11. Remove outer pair of gloves only and dispose of them in the biohazard bag. 12. Remove splash goggles with inner gloves still on and clean the goggles with an antimicrobial towelette (dispose of goggles if contaminated) 13. Remove inner pair of gloves and place them in the biohazard bag for disposal. 14. Close the bag and dispose of as biohazardous waste 15. Wash your hands with soap and water as soon as possible. 16. Return spill kit to designated location. Ensure that the spill kit is restocked for next use. 16

19 BLOOD AND BODY FLUIDS PROCEDURE Treatment of contaminated items (solid, non porous items such as glassware, kitchen equipment, etc.): 1. Spray the item with disinfectant and allow a ten minute contact time (or as recommended by the disinfectant manufacturer s instructions as per the Technical Data Sheet). 2. Remove the contamination by wiping down the item with a paper towel. 3. Reapply the disinfectant and allow a ten minute contact time (or as recommended by the disinfectant manufacturer s instructions as per the Technical Data Sheet). 4. Remove excess disinfectant with a paper towel and allow to air dry. 5. If the treated surface is one that people will come in contact with (such as a toilet, faucet handles, etc.), ensure that ALL disinfectant is removed from the item. Disinfectants can be corrosive and may cause irritation if they come in contact with the skin. 17
