2 Knowledge for HEALTH AND WELFARE The National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) is a Finnish expert agency that provides reliable information on health and welfare for use in decisionmaking and activities in the field. THL seeks to serve the broader society in addition to the scientific community, NGOs, actors and professionals in the field, and decision-makers in central government and municipalities. The ongoing THL reform has two main goals: facilitating more efficient use of THL s information resources, and providing decisionmakers with a stronger knowledge base for their work. Success in both relies on understanding the needs of our customers. 4 RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND OFFICIAL DUTIES are intertwined WE STUDY AND MONITOR THL studies population health and welfare, effectiveness of health and welfare policies and services, as well as environmental health and social problems. THL is one of the top research agencies in Finland. Around 800 scientific articles were published in THL s unique sample collections will be transferred to THL Biobank 45 ongoing projects are funded by the EU, 28 by the Academy of Finland, and five by the Finnish Prime Minister s Office WE MAINTAIN DATA RESOURCES THL collects and produces information on the state of health care and welfare, on social and health services as well as on diseases and their treatment. The Finnish Parliament consulted our experts on 81 occasions in 2014 THL issued 165 statements on request in 2014 THL provides its customers with increasingly diverse information resources. The most popular topics are infectious diseases, vaccination, as well as children, young people and families.
