Solar radiation Don t penetrate the ozone layer Cause of skin reddening and sunburn, tends to damage the skin's more superficial epidermal layers Penetrates the skin more deeply than UVB, play a major part in skin ageing and wrinkling (photoaging)
What does this mean for Vitamin D? The sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the main cause of skin cancer and the best source of vitamin D. We need to balance the risk of skin cancer from too much sun in summer, while at other times of the year getting enough vitamin D from our diet and sun. Images taken from our IOSH funded app
Attitudes and Beliefs Theory of Planned Behaviour When it comes to taking sun-protective measures, how much do you want to do what your health and safety advisor thinks you should do? My employer s support for working out of the sun, will make it easy for me to take sunprotective measures, in the next three weeks. I tried to increase my Vitamin D intake, every day, over the last three weeks. True or False? Stages of Change Pre-contemplation Contemplation Planning Action Maintenance
Occupational Health 25 years history of occupational sun exposure The New England Journal of Medicine, 2012 Gordon and Brieva
Intervention Images taken from our IOSH
Intervention Daily text Smartphone App Vitamin D supplements in winter intervention Images taken from our IOSH
Recruitment and Participants Central Scotland N=30, Sites=5 London city N=36, Sites=4
Design: RCCT Wave 2, n=61 High UV : Apr 17-/Sept 17 Intervention Wave 1, n=56 Control Wave 3, n=61 Low UV : Jan 17-/Mar 17 Low UV : Oct 17-/Dec 17 Control Intervention Intervention Control
Measures Vitamin D UVB radiation sensor TPB (attitudes and beliefs) Stages of change Demographic
Protocol Study start Measures Vitamin D TPB Stage of Change Demographic UV sensor Intervention 3 weeks daily text Control Study end Measures Vitamin D TPB Stage of Change Collect UV sensor or record of Vitamin D intake
Results: Vitamin D Vitamin D levels at start of each wave
Results: Vitamin D Change in Vitamin D levels during each wave
Results: UV Exposure Sum of SED North/South Sum of SED Indoor/Outdoor
Results: Behavioural change Independent samples t-tests at baseline for Wave 1 = no significant differences in any of the direct measures of the TPB constructs (i.e. attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control and behavioural intentions) between groups Independent samples t-test determined differences between the direct measures between the control and intervention groups post intervention Behavioural intentions to take measures to increase their Vitamin D levels was significantly greater at time two (post) in the intervention group (M=5.71, SD=1.20) than in the control group (M=4.06, SD=1.97; t=-3.329, df=15, p<0.01, two-tailed)

Summary The impact on Vitamin D was most successful in the low UV periods Vitamin D levels in high UV period did not change significantly in the expected direction Limitations Carry over of knowledge from wave 1 Investigate further attitudes/beliefs UV exposure (as measured by SED) appeared to be in the opposite direction than expected Limitations Carry over of knowledge from wave 1 Unable to alter work patterns Psychology of the sample
Next steps Explore associations between Vitamin D and UV (SED) Consider demographics in respect to Vitamin D and UV (SED) i.e. skin type, occupation type etc. Investigate behavioural outcomes from theoretical framework (TPB and SoC) Finally Delivering information via text and App support can be an easy, low cost and effective method to deliver complex health information
Thank you
