Web and mobile based alcohol interventions can rapidly increase treatment access 99% of young people are online daily and own a mobile phone Leanne Hides, Lake-Hui Quek, Oksana Zelenko, Stoyan Stoyanov, Wendall Cocksaw & David Kavanagh 89-99% of young Australian s own a smartphone 80% check phone within 15 min of waking & have it with them for all but 2 hours of their day Real-time standardised BIs to young people in their natural environment. Interventions with small effects could result in population level changes Appotential. 2 User Feedback on Existing Apps Alcohol monitoring apps difficult and boring to use Liked fun, interactive and youth-friendly apps Non-stigmatising and non-judgemental apps Drinking alcohol in moderation can increase positive experiences Harm minimisation approach to promote safer drinking practices and increased awareness of drinking limits. Ray promotes harm minimization and controlled drinking strategies Aims to increase asafe drinking behaviours and awareness of alcohol use limits. 2

ENGAGEMENT Is the app fun, interesting, customisable, interactive, well-targeted to audience? FUNCTIONALITY Is the app functioning well, easy to learn, with good navigation, flow, logic? Max drinks on at least one occasion 86% (n = 166) > 3 drinks 22.3% (n = 43) > 11 drinks 2.1% (n = 4) > 20 drinks AESTHETICS INFORMATION QUALITY SUBJECTIVE QUALITY Does the app have good graphic design, visual appeal, colour scheme, stylistic consistency? Does the app contain high quality information (e.g. text, feedback, measures, references) from a credible source? Star rating, # of times rater would use it, would they recommend it, pay for it? Objective App Quality User Feedback MARS scores: Mean (SD) Interpretation Engagement 3.2 (.63) Acceptable Functionality 4.0 (.73) Good Aesthetics 4.1 (.60) Good Information 4.0 (.56) Good Total 3.8 (.52) Good Subjective App Quality Increased awareness of drinking: 68% made them think about their drinking 37% may influence them to drink less 31% motivated them to change their drinking. Support for alcohol control: 46% helped identify their stupid line 80% gave helpful hints on safer drinking 77% think about how their drinking goals. 85% rated the app > 3 stars Alcohol Knowledge Alcohol Use p<.001 time x group interaction at 1 mth scores steadily increased over time in both groups Mean number of drinks consumed on one occasion significantly decreased from baseline to 2 (p <.001), 3 (p =.002) and 6 (p =.002) mths Mean maximum number of drinks consumed on a single occasion decreased at 2 (p =.010), 3 (p =.059) & 6 mths (p =.013), AUDIT scores decreased significantly between baseline and 6 mths (p =.007) 4
