4 Newsletter of the Singapore Pest Management Association Jul - Sep 2013 Singapore has seen a resurgence of dengue cases since late 1980s, after two decades of successful control that relied mostly on an integrated vector control program. Dengue transmission in Singapore seems to follow a 5 6 cycle with incidence rates increase within each cycle before collapsing into 1 or 2 lull years. A major outbreak of dengue was reported in 2005 where 14,209 cases were reported; another smaller outbreak occurred in After about 5-year period of low incidence, this year dengue has emerged again as a major public health concern. The Authority has forecasted that the no of dengue cases this year is likely to surpass 2005 and this will be the highest ever recorded in the dengue history in Singapore. Dengue Clusters A dengue cluster is formed when 2 or more dengue cases occur within 14 days and the homes of the dengue victims are within the distance of 150m. Up to 11 July, a total of 98 clusters were reported. While the bigger clusters remain in Tampines in the eastern part of the island, more clusters are now in the west and north. Of the 98 clusters, more than 35 were in areas beyond eastern Singapore. The dengue death toll this year rose to four when a 66-year-old died from multiorgan failure caused by the viral disease on Monday 8 Jul The death came as figures showed the number of people being infected by the virus taking a dive last week. Dengue Update Singapore s dengue toll has climbed above the five figure mark, up to 11 July 2013, 12,711 patients have been diagnosed with the disease since the start of the year and more cases may be expected. Dengue 2013 Dengue Clusters A dengue cluster is formed when 2 or more dengue cases occur within 14 days and the homes of the dengue victims are within the distance of 150m. Up to 11 July, a total of 98 clusters were reported. While the bigger clusters remain in Tampines in the eastern part of the island, more clusters are now in the west and north. The dengue death toll this year rose to four when a 66-yearold died from multi-organ failure caused by the viral disease on Monday 8 Jul The death came as figures showed the number of people being infected by the virus taking a dive last week. Aedes Breeding Habitats According to NEA statistics, less than 1 % of premises have been found to be breeding mosquitoes. 4

5 Newsletter of the Singapore Pest Management Association Jul - Sep 2013 Re-emergence of Dengue Possible factors include: 1. Declining herd immunity of our human population as result of effective Aedes management programme implemented over the years; 2. A change in the serotype of the prevalent dengue virus with a high epidemic potential; 3. Singapore s location in a dengue endemic region where there is a resurgence of the disease; 4. Increase in population and in international travels. Therefore, even with slight changes in the Aedes mosquito population will amplify the infection rates. NEA s Operation Strategies NEA s key strategy in dengue control is to tackle the root of the problem, which is to deny Aedes mosquitoes the place to breed (i.e. source reduction). The main thrusts in this approach are: a. Preventive surveillance and control; b. Public education & community involvement; c. Enforcement; and d. Research. This multi-pronged approach is necessary to deprive the Aedes mosquito of breeding habitats and to prevent dengue transmission. The integrated dengue control programme incorporates early warning of outbreaks through dengue virus surveillance, consistent mosquito reduction and active case cluster management to stop transmission. SPMA Roles As a professional PMO, we should as much as we can, adopt an environmental friendly integrated approach in Aedes mosquito management with emphasis in educating our clients on source reduction measures to eliminate breeding at homes and advising them to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites at home and working places. SPMA members who are actively involved in public health pest management should also take note of the following observations in current dengue epidemic: Dengue cases were reported mostly in public housing estates with less cases in landed properties as well as condominiums; Most mosquito breeding were detected indoors in premises in identified dengue clusters; NEA is determined to keep dengue under control and targeted to maintain at below 100 dengue cases per epidemiological week; NEA will continue intensifying preventive measures to ensure dengue is under control; Current strict enforcement action will be continued to curb Aedes mosquito breeding at homes and public places. As a professional PMO, we should as much as we can, adopt an environmental friendly integrated approach in Aedes mosquito management with emphasis in educating our clients on source reduction measures to eliminate breeding at homes and advising them to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites at home and working places. Also to intensify our ground and space treatment including larviciding, thermal fogging and motor-blow misting in our routine treatments. 5

7 BEDBUGS Newsletter of the Singapore Pest Management Association Jul - Sep 2013 Introduction Bedbugs are small blood-sucking insects, comprising less than 100 described species in the family Cimicidae. Hitherto, only three species are known to be associated with humans worldwide, i.e., Cimex lectularius present in both temperate and tropical regions, C. hemipterus in tropical regions, and Leptocimex boueti in West Africa. Generally, the former two are more important to humans than the latter one because of their nuisance biting. People who are highly sensitive to bedbug bites may develop allergic reaction, causing the appearance of small red welts on the skin followed by pruritus (intense itching), which may occasionally lead to secondary infection. However, sensitivity of the people may vary from one person to another. Apart from being nuisance, they have also been reported to contribute to mechanical transmission of Hepatitis B virus in some countries such as Africa.. Biology and life cycle Bedbugs undergo hemimetabolous development that consists of egg, nymphal, and adult stages (Fig. 1). Each female can lay eggs during their lifetime and usually deposit 6 10 eggs a week in batches on rough surfaces in dark and dry areas such as cracks and crevices in box springs, furniture, walls, ceilings, floorboards, mattresses, and beds. Eggs hatch after 8 11 days. The newly emerged nymphs take a blood meal and pass through five nymphal instars. It normally takes 5 to 8 weeks for them to complete their nymphal development before reaching adulthood. The adults can live up to 4 years in the laboratory and up to 1.5 years without feeding. Their lifespan is, however, influenced by temperature and humidity. Both males and females, and all the immature stages of bedbugs except eggs feed exclusively on blood. They require a blood meal to molt and reproduce. When their primary hosts are rare or absent, they will feed on variety of warmblooded animals such as rabbits, birds, and rats. Identification Adults are oval, wingless, flattened dorsoventrally, and about 4 7 mm in length. They appear pale yellow when unfed and dark brown when fully fed. The proboscis is slender and normally protruding forward and downward when they take a blood meal. They have reduced forewings (hemelytra) overlay the mesoand metathorax. Males can be readily identified by the presence of more pointed abdominal tip with small curved penis, while females possess mesospermalage (organ of Berlese or Ribaga) on the left side Spray the infested premises with insecticides (malathion, carbaryl, and propoxur). Pyrethroids (deltamethrin, permethrin, and cypermethrin) can be used to flush the bedbugs out from their hiding places to increase their chances of exposure to insecticides. 7 Management strategies Spray the infested premises with insecticides (malathion, carbaryl, and propoxur). Pyrethroids (deltamethrin, permethrin, and cypermethrin) can be used to flush the bedbugs out from their hiding places to increase their chances of exposure to insecticides. Blow dust formulations of insecticides on the mattress and beds. Fumigate the premises. This is the most effective way to eradicate the bugs because it kills all stages of bedbugs. Physical methods such as vacuuming, heating, freezing, and steam cleaning may also prove useful.

8 Newsletter of the Singapore Pest Management Association Apr Jul -- Sep Jun 2013 SPMA EGM 2013 SPMA held an EGM on Thursday, 27 June 2013 at the Temasek Club Conference Room at 4:30pm with 17 voting members present.
