2 Title: Density Grade Level: 2 nd Time: 1 hour Legos (3) Popcorn Kernel (3) Cherry Tomato (3) Poster Board Food Coloring Worksheet Vocabulary: Materials: 3 Mason Jars Rubbing Alcohol Density: of material is mass per unit. It is the simplest way to compare weight of two or more objects. Things of less density will float and things of more density will sink. Mass: a coherent, typically large body of matter with no definite shape. Honey Corn Syrup Maple Syrup Vegetable Oil Dish Soap Ping Pong Balls (3) Paper Clips (3) Die (3) Marbles (3) Barbie Shoes (3) Learning Objectives: -Students will learn what density is -Students will understand that size of object does not affect weight of object -Students will learn to communicate orally and by using a graph to predict and discuss outcome -Students will work in teams to conduct experiment -Student will learn to make predictions -Students will learn to collect data.
3 Standards: NS Students will communicate as a class on the outcomes and use a chart to compare their findings Preparation: Time: 10 minutes Setup: Create three stations with all materials at each station to create the project with the groups of students. Procedure: NS Students will be divided into three groups to conduct the experiment NS Students will collect and compare findings NS Students will individually predict what order the liquids will separate into and where the objects will float. Background: The students should understand the difference between heavy and light objects. They understand that some things sink while others will float. Explain density to the students. Two objects can be the same size and shape but have a different weight or density. Have the students predict the order the liquid will fall. They will color their worksheet to show their hypothesis. We will split into three groups of seven to test out hypothesis. Have the students take turns pouring in the liquids in whatever order they desire. Once the liquids separate we will discuss our findings. Then we will predict where each object will sink or float. In our groups, we will take turns dropping the objects into the liquid. We will check our hypothesis and discuss what happened. Once we are finished in our groups, we will discuss the project as a class. We will create a group chart of the data we collected. We will take time to discuss the experiment and answer questions.
4 Safety Recommendations: Be aware of spills and possible wet floors. Lesson Reflection: Have students answer: Assessment: Collect the worksheets students created to predict the experiment. The final assessment will be a group assessment. We will create a chart to document our observations. -Things that are more dense will? (Sink) -Things that are less dense will? (Float) Have students list the layers of liquid they observed. Ensure students understand that density is used to weigh objects of similar size.
