2 Special Interpreter Training (Interpreting Team Only) Wednesday, 4:00pm 6:30pm Depiction: Constructive Action/Constructive Dialogue (Sharon Lott) 2. This workshop will discuss the type of ASL depiction, and how to identifying depiction. ASL depiction involves the visual representation of aspects of an entity, event or abstract concept using components that are accessible in the immediate environment. ASL depiction is used to represent abstract ideas, or objects, movement, entities, actions or interactions, and people s words and thoughts. 8:00 AM 10:30 AM & 1:30pm 4:00pm For Deaf/Fluent ASL Users Workshop Presented in ASL Only Deafhood Experiences on Deaf Ministry (Donald Tinsley) This workshop is designed for Deaf and hearing people who need to know more about what s involved in Deaf ministry and need to recognize the value of Deaf Culture as it relates to the church community. It also emphasizes the significance of Deaf churches to the Deaf Community. It will help the participants to understand the principles of Deafhood and its long lasting impact on the Deaf Community. Information and training will challenge the participants to examine the ethical, moral, and spiritual issues that arise in dealing with a Deaf ministry as it relates to a hearing church..

3 Interpreter Beginners/Novice Religious Terminology (William Ross) One of the Toughest Interpreting Settings is my church. Religious or church interpreting is one of the most challenging settings interpreters face. Though frequently minimized, the complex and varied nature of the religious setting requires the interpreter to be competent in religious terminology. This workshop will address many of the components of the church service such as songs/hymns, prayers, sermons, and Bible verses; furthermore, participants will discuss their individual religious lexicons and how differing denominations influence the sign language choices and lexicons. During this workshop, the participants will have the opportunity to conceptually interpret religious terminology (sanctification, redemption) into ASL and also interpret scriptural passages into ASL. Lastly, participants will discuss scriptural content and contextual factors, addressing such concerns as bible translations, and antiquated language found in hymns. Interpreters Intermediate Interpreting Constructed Dialogues: Who Said What to Whom?! (David Evans) 2. One of the most common discourse features in ASL is constructed dialogue. Often referred to as Character Role Shifting, this form of discourse can be challenging for interpreters to recognize and render accurately in spoken English due to its complex use of space and subtle movements of the eyes and body. This workshop is a shorter, conference-length version of Shift Happens: Recognizing ASL Performatives, and will focus specifically on principles of constructed dialogues, steps to recognize and produce constructed dialogues in ASL texts, video examples of ASL constructed dialogues in context for analysis and interpreting practice. While not a quick-fix workshop, this session will enable interpreters at all levels to look at their work in a new, more effective way. Always know who s saying what to whom!

4 Interpreters Intermediate Face-Painting with Non-Manual Signals in ASL (Patricia Trix Bruce) 2. Non-manual signals (NMS) in American Sign Language enrich and clarify the meaning of manual signs. Come and learn the art of painting your face with a full spectrum of NMS colors and designs. Non- Manual Signals include: 1) Non-Manual Adverbs 2) Lexical Non-Manual Behaviors 3) Non-Manual Grammatical Markers 4) Emotional States / Evaluative judgments 5) Prosodic Structure 6) Discourse Structure 7) Turn Taking 8) Backchannel Feedback 9) Grammatical Sound Markers, and 10) Mouth Movements. This workshop will focus on developing accurate non-manual signals and markers as used in ASL. Demonstrations of each category of facial behaviors and head movements will be shown in context. Practice exercises will be offered. By the end of this workshop, you ll be an artist! Interpreters Advance Workshop Presented in ASL Only Preparing for the new NIC: Performance and Interview (Carol Tipton) This workshop will help participants prepare for the new National Interpreter Certification exam, interview and performance portions. It will cover testing information and new test format using the Candidate Bulletin and the CCBC NIC practice DVD. Practice exam scenarios, both the interview and performance, will be used. This is a 5-hour workshop. First Timer s Forum 4:15pm 5:00pm This introductory forum, led by IIDS, Inc. Founder and Executive Director, Paul William Ellis, will give a complete overview of International Institute of Deaf Services, Inc., its leadership, staff, and services. Participants will learn the history of Impartation and meet the staff behind the scenes. Paul, along with his staff, will entertain questions from 1 st timers and do everything possible to ensure each individual feels comfortable and welcome.

5 8:00 AM 10:30 AM & 1:30pm 4:00pm For Deaf/Fluent ASL Users Workshop Presented in ASL Only Deaf Leadership in the 21 st Century (Evon Black) This workshop examines many concepts of leadership from a Deaf perspective and looks to develop an understanding of leadership in this postindustrial era. The presenter will discuss the ethics of leadership that distinguishes leadership from management. Presenter will also make suggestions that can be immediately utilized in helping to transform participants' understanding of leadership. Interpreter Beginners/Novice A 21 st Century Deaf Ministry from a Biblical Perspective (Noah Butler) This workshop will address every facet of deaf ministry from its conception to its production of disciples for the Kingdom of God. While using the presenter s book, A 21 st Century Deaf Ministry From a Biblical Perspective as a point of reference, interpreters and deaf individuals will find insight on what is involved in setting up, maturing and maintaining a deaf ministry. This workshop will also cover the importance of ministry team selection, making the church a part of your team, and appropriate structure for a deaf ministry group. It is believed that if participants will apply the principles discussed, they will see their ministry move from survival, to stability, to success, to significance, and become a model 21 st Century (d)deaf Ministry.

6 Interpreters Intermediate Developing Receptive Skills (William Ross) Improving visual receptive language skills among sign language interpreters and/or users is the focus of this training. Many interpreters/signers for the Deaf today acquire American Sign Language (ASL) as a second language; the ability to understand sign language is critical to a comprehensive understanding of the signed message. Providing interpreters with the tools needed to identify areas of concern will aid them in acquiring the skills needed to comprehend the message and render an accurate interpretation. Attention will be given to various techniques that aid in developing greater receptive ability. Some topics addressed: contextual clues, numeric recognition, fingerspelling, regional signs, and techniques used to elicit repetition from Deaf speakers. [Participants will have an opportunity to practice voice interpreting in small groups] Interpreters Advance Workshop Presented in ASL Only A Linguistic and Semantic Tune-up for Interpreters: Does ORANGE-EYES mean amazing? (David Evans) Hearing accent: signing that marks people as second-language learners of American Sign Language. Hearing accent can affect not only the comprehension of a message being delivered in ASL, but also perceptions of interpreters as cultural outsiders. Interpreters should strive for natural-looking language in ASL, but what makes people look more or less native? Through the use of selected texts, this workshop will address common linguistic and semantic issues that challenge interpreters from production errors (specifically hand shape and movement parameters) to sign usage notes (denotative and connotative meanings of selected ASL vocabulary) including the usage of ORANGE-EYES ( to be shocked, an ASL verb) to mean amazing (an English adjective). Whether newer or veteran in the field, this workshop can reinforce how you already use ASL while also conveying new information about the language to help you tune up your interpreting work! CDI Forum 4:15pm 5:15pm If you are interested in becoming a Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) and are looking for guidance on taking the CDI test, or if you need information about mentoring opportunities or safe places to practice, then this forum will be perfect for you. During this one hour discussion forum facilitated by Pam Collins, you will have a comfortable environment as well as the opportunity to bring up questions and concerns about entering into the CDI profession

7 8:00 AM 10:30 AM & 1:30pm 4:00pm For Deaf/Fluent ASL Users Workshop Presented in ASL Only Developing Servant Leaders Who Impact the Deaf Community with the Christian Faith (Chad Entinger) While there are different models and styles of leadership, this workshop will focus on Jesus example of servant leadership and how you can be a servant leader like Him. Furthermore, you will be challenged and encouraged to develop servant leaders in your Deaf church or ministry. From the examples of servant leaders who have impacted the Deaf community with the Christian faith through the years, ideas, strategies, methods and applications will be given for current and future Deaf ministry outreach and impact. Interpreter Beginners/Novice Listening: Hearing Beyond Words (Bonnie F. Gibson-Brydon) In this workshop, participants will challenge in how they listen:* (comprehension skills) with group discussion on what and how we comprehend. The goal is to introduce listening skills and to understand how we block and/or comprehend auditory and non-visual information. Technology has opened the door to more knowledge globally, culturally effecting information around us, yet has our listening changed? Secondly, participants will be introduced to inquiry,* (developing memory techniques for message concept) the WHO/WHAT FACTOR! The presenter coined this term to establish a mind pattern of Inquiry! Finally, articulation,* (mapping) will be addressed The participants will be able to identify discourse (mapping). In the practice of listening, more often people distract rather than listen. There are measurements of listening and levels of information shared. In the group practice we have an observer (most powerful position for awareness development) watch listening, measuring the depth by a process taught in the workshop.

8 Interpreters Intermediate Words Easy to Say but Harder to Sign (Jean Plant) This workshop is for anyone looking to increase their ASL Vocabulary. The initial part of the workshop will be a lecture detailing expansion techniques (content to context analysis.) After a short lecture, this workshop will become a hands-on exercise with participants working in small groups. The participants will be given index cards with English words (which require expansion in ASL) and they will work together to create ASL equivalents to these English words. This workshop is fun, yet challenging. Interpreters Advance Workshop Presented in ASL Only Get a Grip on Fingerspelling (Sharon Lott) Interpreters often face barriers when their voice interpretation must include concepts that were originally fingerspelled in the source language. Fingerspelling is generally thought to have the same twenty-six letters of the English alphabet in manual form; this is not necessarily the case. Research has shown that there are upwards of ninety different fingerspelled letters/handshapes. This is possible due to sign assimilation among other elements including fluency, economy of motion, and rhythm of fingerspelled words. Such elements will be discussed and explained, and participants will have time allotted for application of the information and skills taught during this training. Plenary Address 11:00am 12:00pm A Ministry That Multiplies (Missions in Deaf Ministry) (Chuck Snyder) The scripture, Acts 6:7 states So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith. investing our lives in potential leaders - thus multiplying your efforts as they go on to have an impact.
