3 Course Development_ In all our course development we evaluate training needs with Heads of Department and senior staff. Course design and content aim to engage the participants actively and use the knowledge gained as quickly as possible to cement learning. Our ethos is to provide stimulating, interactive learning modules that engage the Audiologist and leave them with valuable skills. At Starkey Laboratories we are committed to delivering the highest levels of training and have an on-going commitment to continuously improve the training environment for our customers. Internally we regularly hold coaching and brainstorming meetings to create new ideas and materials to ensure training is effective and enjoyable for delegates. Evaluation from our delegates and their managers plays a significant part of in the design process. Course Development 5
4 Examples of Training Sessions_ Departmental Introduction A 1 hour introduction delivered in departments often as a lunchtime informal session. This session would provide an overview of the Starkey product range. An introduction to the unique feature set and benefits of Starkey products and include a software overview. Half day product introduction training After introducing Starkey as a company we will describe how we will work in partnership to support the department. This session will focus on the details of the product range, specifications, and how to best select a product from our range to suit your patient s needs. During these sessions we will use live products to allow audiologists to connect to the instruments and put their learning into practice immediately. By employing case studies and workbooks we will allow the team to work through the software and product range at their own pace but with the support of the Starkey Training team on hand to assist with any queries or clarification that may be required. Supported Fittings These will be booked as convenient for the department with the aim of supporting the introduction of the Starkey product with each audiologist. Booking supported fits after training enables early implementation of the knowledge acquired and cements learning. Starkey staff like to also allocate time at the end of the fits for immediate questions and one to one feedback on the fitting. Supported fittings are often used after initial fittings to further develop skills in fine tuning and troubleshooting. Repair clinic support These sessions are aimed at the support staff such as receptionists and Assistant Audiologists who may be involved in the maintenance and instruction of the patients wearing the products. The sessions focus on the best way to replace faulty products, troubleshooting and providing a basic understanding of the product range and accessories that are supplied with the product. Web Based Training Using Adobe Connect software, we can rapidly create and deploy training content using an online virtual classroom. Our training team author materials and complete courses, creating content and publishing it so that future elearning sessions can be repeated using the recordings of the virtual classrooms. Additionally Adobe Connect is a learning management system which allows Starkey to keep track of individual and learner group activities and progress if required to report back to heads of service. Starkey can provide tailored web based training sessions to supplement face to face training and to rapidly implement upgrade and new staff training. Audiology on Demand based session We cover an on demand service that allows audiologists to press a button in the Inspire fitting software and be connected to one of our training or technical support team immediately during our standard office hours. These sessions can also be pre-booked to support staff with the Starkey products and fitting software. The sessions allow the Starkey Staff member to connect live to the audiologists PC and take control of the mouse within our software to demonstrate and clarify issues they are discussing. The sessions allow remote one to one support. 5 Detailed Example of a One Day Training Session including Supported Fittings_ This training day has 3 distinct sessions to allow audiologists to understand the new products, practice fitting them in a case study and then implement their knowledge with live patient fittings all whilst being supported by Starkey staff. 1. Aims & Objectives of Product Introduction Introduce all products in the Starkey NHS range Understand the unique features of the product range Introduce the Starkey Microtech software Content Overview of the product range Technical specification of each product Introducing Starkey feature sets and how they are utilised to optimise patient outcomes Software overview Overview of counselling tools Overview of support tools e.g. Audiology on Demand 2. Aims & Objectives of Supported Fittings Build on the initial training and put new knowledge to use in a clinical setting Utilise new technology in clinic at an early stage Ensure early implementation of training knowledge to cement learning Allow Q&A session with Starkey staff as questions occur Content Starkey staff onsite to offer immediate support during initial product fittings. Try to offer each audiologist the opportunity to do one fitting as a minimum during the initial training event. Question time alloted at the end of a fitting if issues arise for audiologist during the fitting. Prodiuct Introduction_ Hands on Training_ Supported Fittings 9
6 Professional Development Courses_ Starkey Laboratories Training team run a number of scheduled professional development courses each year. The courses detailed below can all be tailored for NHS staff and provided in departments as lunchtime and half day training sessions free of charge. Otoscopy and Impression Taking Refresher This course will cover aspects of taking an ear impression and also includes detailed training on accurate case history assessment, identification of clues and referral criteria. Also covered in the course is a review of the basic anatomy of the external and middle ear, with a view to identification of possible problems and conditions. Impression taking training will start with correct use of the otoscope, according to best practice (BSA procedures), gaining experience for identification of healthy ears and also common conditions and possible contradictions. Hygiene and infection control will also be covered. Earmould Product Review This course is aimed at professionals who work clinically with earmoulds and earmould materials already. It aims to introduce delegates to a wide range of Starkey s portfolio of earmould product and reinforce the in house expertise we have. By using the delegates existing clinical experience but trying to discuss their decisions in an analytical way the delegates engage with others opinions of the use of materials and styles. By having materials, samples and a factory tour, (if on Starkey site), we break the day into hands on sessions with small amounts of actual lecture time. How to Fit Bone Conduction Devices This course is aimed at professionals who work clinically with conductive hearing loss where conventional air conduction is not an option. It aims to introduce delegates to Starkey s portfolio of bone conduction hearing systems. We discuss the physiology of conductive hearing loss and the application of Bone conduction systems for all ages. Delegates will be shown Starkey fit software and the product range will be available to view. Real Ear Measurements & Speech Mapping This course is aimed at hearing professionals who need to understand the procedures of Real Ear Measurement within their practice. The tuition provides hands on experience with typical equipment today and will ensure each delegate is confident to use typical equipment in everyday fittings. This course will also provide guidance on the use of Speech Mapping to help validate hearing aid fittings and provide valuable counselling to hearing aid wearers. 7 Working effectively with tinnitus patients Many patients with hearing loss also experience tinnitus. This course is aimed at audiologists to ensure they have an understanding of how tinnitus distress can occur and ways in which they can effectively work with patients who complain about tinnitus using hearing aids and noise generators. The course introduces easy relaxation and stress management techniques, as well as outcome measures related to tinnitus. High Frequency Hearing Loss This course is designed as a CPD event for audiologists in clinical practice. It covers definitions, testing and prevalence of high frequency losses. We will undertake a review of the conventional audiological approaches to fitting these hearing losses. An overview of the currently available frequency lowering technologies and the research behind them as well as how audiologists might verify the fitting of frequency lowering technology. Current Procedures in Audiometry This course will gain an understanding of the latest BSA requirement for pure tone audiometry and masking procedures. It is aimed at any audiologist who wishes to refresh their skills and be confident and competent about aspects of audiometry such as selection of the correct masking rule. During the course you will be taken through practical examples to enable you to interpret audiometric results and make decisions based upon them. BSA Otoscopy & Impression Taking (Chargeable Course) In addition we are an accredited British Society of Audiology (BSA) Training Centre for the Otoscopy and impression taking certificate. This course is aimed at none audiologically qualified staff, such as assistant audiologists, who want to take impressions of children over the age of 5 and adults and have a recognised certificate of competence. This course is chargeable but can be arranged at discounted rates for groups of staff in one location. Please speak to your area account manager to discuss this course. Learning Outcomes At the end of the course delegates will be able to: Working effectively with tinnitus patients_ High Frequency Hearing Loss_ Current Procedures in Audiometry_ BSA Otoscopy & Impression Taking_ Give clear instructions to patients with and without hearing loss Examine the outer ear without an otoscope Perform thorough and safe otoscopy on adults and children aged over 5 Recognise abnormal conditions and refer accordingly Perform correct and safe impression technique with both a syringe and a gun Arrange for manufacture of the correct earmould. _13
