2 18 July 2017 E-Paper Govt launches low-cost screening device to detect congenital hearing loss in newborns New Delhi: The ministry of science and technology launched a low-cost indigenous screening device on Monday to detect congenital hearing loss in newborns. The portable Sohum hearing screening device measures auditory brain waves via three electrodes placed on the baby s head. When stimulated, they detect electrical responses generated by the brain s auditory system. If there is no response, the child cannot hear. The battery-operated device is non-invasive, which means babies do not need to be sedated, which is the current, and risky, testing in process at present. Another key advantages over other testing systems is the patented, in-built algorithm that filters out ambient noise from the test signal. This is important becausee health clinics can be incredibly crowded and noisy, a statement by the Department of Biotechnology said.

3 Delhi July 17, 2017 Last Updatedd at 00:20 IST Made in India for Global Health Sohum"- An innovative Newborn hearing screening Device The indigenously developed newborn hearing screening device SOHUM was formally launched by the Minister of State for Science and Technology & Earth Sciences, Shri Y.S.. Chowdary, in New Delhi today. The newborn hearing screening device developed by School of International Biodesign (SIB) startup M/s Sohum Innovation Labs India Pvt. Ltd. This innovative medical device has been developed under Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India supported (SIB). SIB is a flagship Program of the DBT aimed to develop innovative and affordable medical devices as per unmet clinical needs of India and to train the next generation of medical technology innovators in India, it is a valuable contribution to the Make in India campaign of the Government. This Program is implemented jointly at AIIMS and IIT Delhi in collaboration with International partners. Biotech Consortium India Limited manages techno-legal activities of the Program. Sohum is a low cost and unique device which uses brainstem auditory evoked response, the gold standard in auditory testing to check for hearing response in a newborn. As of now, this technology is prohibitively expensive and inaccessible to many. Start-up Sohum has made the technology appropriate for the resource constrained settings and aims to cater to nearly 26 million babies born every year in India.? One of the most common birth disorders congenital hearing loss is a result of both genetic and non-genetic factors. These factors are mostly associated with resource-poor economies such as India where, unlike advanced healthcare systems, hearing impairment goes undiagnosed. Thus, when it is discovered at 4+ years, its too late to reverse the damage and this leads to a host of problems such as impaired communication skills and even possible mental illness; all of which have a deep impact on the child, emotionally and economically life-long. Globally, 8,00,000 hearing impaired babies are born annually of which, nearly 1,,00,000 are in India. And all this preventablee damage needs is early screening, which can facilitate timely treatment and rehabilitation. Sohum team has come up with a screening device to facilitate the routine screening of newborn babies with the potential to help children at a key stage of their development.

6 NEW DELHI, JULY 17: Screening newborns for hearing impairments will now be easy with a start-up launching a lowcost device that can monitor auditory brain waves. The device developed by Sohum Innovation Labs India Private Limited was formally launched here on Monday by the Minister of State for Science and Technology YS Chowdary. The device was developed as part of a Department of Biotechnology project to develop new medical technologies. 7 Times of India Vishwa Mohan TNN Jul 17, 2017, 08:27 PM IST Govt launches low-cost indigenously developed hearing screening device for newborns NEW DELHI: The science & technology ministry on Monday launched a low-cost indigenously developed hearing screening device - called Sohum - for newborns with an aim to make this battery-operated non-invasive device available across the country to cater nearly 26 million babies born every year in India. Early screening will help in minimising or reversing the damage. The Sohum uses brain-stem auditory evoked response technology which is recommended as best screening choice by the American Association of Pediatrics and the National Health Services of UK. Since the battery-operated device is non-invasive, it doesn't require babies to be sedated. "The Sohum is a perfect product to be given to the Public Health Centers across the country. Local manufacture of such products is crucial to further bring down costs", said Y S Chowdary, minister of state for science and technology, after launching the device which is developed by the School of International Biodesign (SIB) startup Sohum Innovation Labs India Pvt Ltd. At present, most of the hospital-born babies could not be tested in absence of cost-effective device. Globally 8,00,000 hearing impaired babies are born annually of which nearly 1,00,000 are born in India.

9 DH News Service, New Delhi: Jul , 2:44 IST Biomedical engineers from Bengaluru have developed a new and inexpensive medical device to screen hearing defects of the babies so that doctors can take necessary corrective measures at the earliest. Every year, close to 100,000 children with varying degrees of hearing defects are born in India. If detected early, a majority of them can recover from these defects. But most hospitals don't do the test, because the existing diagnostic technology is prohibitively expensive. This is where a young team of researchers chipped in. With support from the Department of Biotechnology, Stanford University and Union Health Ministry, they developed and perfected a hearing screening device with high sensitivity and specificity for mass screening of newborns. Sohum is a low-cost and unique device, which uses its unique algorithm to analyse brain signals that trigger auditory responses, the gold standard in auditory testing to check for hearing response in a new born. Testing with our device would cost the parents anywhere between Rs 600 and 1,200. In contrast, a few private hospitals offer the tests at a price of Rs 4,000 for every test. They also need to create a sound-proof room for the test whereas our tests can be conducted in field conditions, Nitin Sisodia, Stanford India Biodesign fellow and founder of Sohum Innovation Lab, Bengaluru, who developed the instrument, told DH.
