We have created a Members Area and really want to upload more online resources for our members. Please make sure you register on the website in order to benefit from these. Please allow about a week for the Honorary Secretary to check your membership status and to authorise your online access. Our Society has been invited to jointly organise the 31 st Annual meeting and Refresher course of the European Society of Head and Neck Radiology (ESHNR) in September The British Society of Head and Neck Imaging (BSHNI) will also co-host. The meeting will take place in central London. This is exciting news for us and reflects the increasing impact of our small specialised field amongst the wider medical imaging community. It is hoped that members of all three societies will benefit from this cross-border European network. Public Health England has recently published some guidelines on the safe use of hand held X-ray machines. Please see the section e-links to guidelines. BSDMFR Spring Scientific Meeting, March 2016, Cardiff The BSDMFR Spring Scientific meeting took place on Thursday and Friday 3 and 4 March 2016, at Park Plaza Hotel in Cardiff. There were many excellent speakers, speaking on diverse topics. Saty Bhatia talked about vascular malformations. Head and neck swellings were discussed by Andrew Cronin and Rhian Rhys. Professor Stephen Richmond spoke on 3D imaging. Andrew Cronin did a second talk, on orthognathic planning. Emma Hingston gave an interesting insight into the management of non-vital immature permanent incisors. Imaging in facial trauma was described by Salman Qureshi. Professor Jonathan Shepherd transfixed the audience with his talk on the social aspects of facial trauma, where police knowledge of Cardiff nightlife 1

2 coupled with Emergency Department data assisted with targeted policing and ultimately reduction of facial injuries. The Cardiff model of violence prevention, first implemented in Wales in 2001, has since been emulated in other parts of the world. The meeting also included members case presentations and a presentation by Niall ONeill, who won the BSDMFR Travel Bursary. Peer Review was an interesting and unusually calm session. The meeting dinner was enjoyable and a great chance to catch up with acquaintences. BSDMFR Autumn Study Day, November 2016, London The BSDMFR Autumn Study Day was held on Saturday 12 th November 2016 and took place in New Hunts House at Guy s Hospital, London. The programme was organised by Stephen Goss and focussed on the role that CBCT played in dental radiology. Bruce Walmsley talked about the physics of computed and direct digital radiography. Once again his use of water in multiple cups helped to illustrate how storage capacitors work. Jonathan Davies, Kirstyn Donaldson and Rosalyn Clarkson talked about the use of CBCT in maxillofacial radiology. After lunch, Rebecca Goulson gave a systematic review of CBCT. Stephen Goss then gave a very lively talk about the practical aspects of performing CBCT scans. His bold and direct description of techniques has given the audience a lasting memory of what to do and what not to do! The study day ended with a talk from the President Nick Drage on dosimetry. The meeting was attended by a bigger crowd than usual. Perhaps the topic and the timing (on a Saturday) made it popular. Certainly, the feedback showed that most of the audience had enjoyed the study day. Society matters Radiographer benefit - Due to the success of the CBCT courses run by the Society in , Council has agreed to use some of the income to help member radiographers to attend the annual scientific meeting. For one dental radiographer from each dental hospital, the registration fee for the meeting will be waived. The person must be a paid-up member of BSDMFR. Each respective dental hospital is responsible for deciding who the person should be. The superintendent radiographer from each dental hospital should notify the BSDMFR Honorary Secretary no later than three weeks prior to the annual scientific meeting as to the name of the individual. The Society s logo has been redrawn and now shows less of the orbits. Thanks to Paul Nixon, the Society s new website is up and running. This will help to showcase the various events that the Society organises, and also help to disseminate Society news and information more quickly to members. We are keen to make greater use of this valuable resource. Please make sure 2

3 you register on the website and set up your own password. If you have ideas for discussion boards or other items to go on the website, then please contact Paul Nixon or other Council members. In recent years, with the Society growing and becoming involved in more activities, the duties for the Honorary Secretary have expanded. Council has now agreed that a separate person, a meetings assistant, be co-opted onto Council in order to undertake the role of administering the annual scientific meeting and the radiographers study day. This will allow the Honorary Secretary to concentrate on matters directly relating to BSDMFR as detailed in the Society s Constitution. A recent survey on dental radiology workforce has shown an increase of x500% in CBCT scans and x300% in ultrasounds in the past 5 years. Eight consultants are likely to retire within the next 5 years. There is a clear requirement for more specialists to be trained. The survey data is being presented to the Workforce Group of Health Education England. BSDMFR bank details BSDMFR is a small professional society, and run by volunteers. In order for the Society to run smoothly, it is important that members do make sure they pay their annual membership fees on time, and to the correct bank account. Many members are aware of the Society s new bank details and have made the required change to their standing orders. Thank you very much to those members who have done so. The new bank for BSDMFR is Santander UK. This is separate business to Santander and is not affected by Brexit. For those members who have yet to change their standing order, this is a reminder that 1st February is the start of the membership year for the Society s members, and is the date when membership fee is due. BSDMFR s bank was changed just over a year ago from NatWest in Scotland to Santander in London. 4 Report from ECDMFR, June 2016, Cardiff, Wales By Suk Ng and Simon Harvey This year the European Congress of DentoMaxilloFacial Radiology took place in the beautiful historic building of Cardiff City Hall on June. Having won the bid four years earlier, BSDMFR was well prepared to host this biennial European congress for the first time in the UK. Opening ceremony, ECDMFR, Cardiff City Hall Dinner at City Hall There were 5 keynote lectures, from Rhodri Evans, Eric Whaites, Jackie Brown, Louise Matzen and Jim Thurston. Rhodri spoke on ultrasound imaging of the head and neck. Eric delivered an interactive session on radiological interpretation: which was entertaining and well received. Jackie, who obligingly stepped in at the last minute, gave a lecture on salivary gland intervention, demonstrating the minimally invasive methods which are now available in treating salivary gland disease. Jim was captivating in his talk on radiation protection. Louise stimulated debate with her excellent keynote speech about the use of CBCT in third molar exodontia, a hot topic and the most common reason for CBCT to be undertaken in many dental hospitals. This provoked a healthy discussion from the audience. There was a workshop on ultrasound imaging and sialoendoscopy, organised by Rose Ngu. Delegates learnt about anatomy seen on ultrasound; and delighted in tackling a number of vegetables with endoscopes. The workshop on digital dentistry, organised by Bart Vandenberghe, was very popular, and allowed delegates to, amongst other things, perform optical impressions of teeth using a hand held intraoral camera. Approximately 80 oral presentations were arranged in 3 parallel sessions. Over 100 posters were displayed. Several of the Specialist Registrars were involved with helping to run the hands on workshops, as well as giving oral presentations and presenting posters. Digital Dentistry workshop Social events included dinners at the City Hall, the National Museum and the Principality Stadium. The evening at the museum was memorable with drinks reception in the modern art gallery, a delightful space for aperifs, before walking into the grand hall to the wonderful singing by the Welsh Male Voices Choir, a truly spectacular experience. There was excellent food 4

5 and drink, with BSDMFR contributing to the wine. The Gala Dinner included a tour of the Principality Stadium (=Millennium Stadium), the proud home of Welsh rugby. When we were shown the Royal Box, nearly everybody wanted to hold the trophy and sit in the Queen s seat. After a traditional Welsh dinner in the Directors Lounge, some people visited the photo booth, which was great fun and may have given a few of us ideas for new hairstyles! Dinner at the Museum. The meeting was rounded off with a hearty farewell session. Fun in the photo booth. Nick Drage, Chair of Local Organising Committee, had worked tirelessly with many others in BSDMFR as well as EADMFR in order to put on one of the most successful European congress meetings that has ever taken place. BSDMFR CBCT Courses New hairstyles anyone? BSDMFR continues to work with the Royal College of Surgeons of England to organise CBCT training courses for dentists. A one-day course for Referrers was held in November 2016, followed by a one-day course for Interpretation of Dento-Alveolar CBCT. 5

6 The Society has also been invited by other organisations to run CBCT courses. In May, a two-day course was held at the British Orthodontic Society. In June, at the ECDMFR in Cardiff, a one-day Referrers course was held. To date, all CBCT courses have been successful and BSDMFR has received other invitations to run courses elsewhere, including Ireland and Italy.
