3 High Rates of Satisfaction with Filtek Silorane Low Shrink Posterior Restorative News Recent surveys conducted in Germany and France indicate that a vast majority of dentists who utilized a trial kit of Filtek Silorane Low Shrink Posterior Restorative from 3M ESPE in practice are highly satisfied with this new composite. (This product is also registered as 3M ESPE Filtek LS Low Shrink Posterior Restorative [North America]; and Filtek P90 Low Shrink Posterior Restorative [Latin America/Asia]). In France, more than 900 dentists were contacted. Of those who had used the trial kit, 84 percent were satisfied with the product and will use it again. They reported an average score of 3.91 out of 5 for technical performance. The German study included more than 200 dentists and found that 94 percent of those who had tried Filtek Silorane restorative will continue to use it. As the world s leading adhesives manufacturer, 3M s understanding of adhesives dates back to 1902 when the company introduced its first product, sandpaper, which consisted of abrasive minerals and paper held together by an adhesive developed by 3M scientists. Global Impact Seemingly mundane in purpose to join materials adhesives actually comprise one of 3M s most sophisticated technology platforms. This platform has generated thousands of innovative and useful products that span the full spectrum of stickiness with applications in countless markets. In fact, 3M uses this technology in approximately 40 percent of its products, from Post-it Notes to 3M ESPE Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus Adhesive. Dental Adhesives Starting with the introduction of Scotchbond Adhesive in 1983, 3M ESPE has served the dental industry with new adhesive products to the market that deliver high-quality performance. Scotchbond Adhesive was followed by 3M ESPE s Light Cure Scotchbond Adhesive and then by Scotchbond Dual Cure Adhesive, which is cured both chemically and with light. Then, 3M ESPE Scotchbond 2 Adhesive was introduced, the first adhesive to employ an acidic primer material as the first step of the bonding process. Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus Adhesive was the next step in adhesive technology, using a polymer developed for Vitrebond Resin Modified Glass Ionmomer (RMGI) Liner/base to solve the variable dentin bond strengths seen with the Scotchbond 2 adhesive. Scotchbond multi-purpose plus adhesive established dentin bonding agents as clinically proven materials in the dental industry. In the years after the introduction of that industry-leading innovation, 3M ESPE continued to bring leading products to market. Primer and Adhesive in One In 1997, 3M ESPE Adper Single Bond Adhesive was introduced. A two-component, total-etch bonding agent, this generation of products combined primer and adhesive into a single composition. Then in 1999, the original 3M ESPE Prompt Self-Etch Adhesive was introduced and was one of the first self-etch adhesives on the market. It was the first product available in the convenient, unit-dose, L-Pop delivery system, allowing the customer to etch, prime and bond in a single step. The Next Step: Nanotechnology 3M s investment in nanotechnology has resulted in major breakthroughs in the dental restoration field. 3M ESPE was the first organization to commercialize true nanotechnology with 3M ESPE Filtek Supreme Plus Universal Restorative. Improving Self-Etch Technology Global adhesive trends show that self-etch adhesives are gaining popularity and growing at a faster rate than total-etch adhesives. More customers today want products that offer reduced postoperative sensitivity, fewer steps and easier procedures. IMTEC provides a more immediate solution with its mini dental implants. These are small-diameter, single-unit dental implants that don t require invasive surgery so bone trauma is minimal and patient discomfort is limited. Mini dental implants are primarily used for denture fixation and allow for immediate loading. 6

7 Imprint 3 Light Body VPS Impression Material Shown to Be Effective for Inexperienced Users Clinical Study A study being conducted at the University of Alabama at Birmingham seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of two impression materials when used by inexperienced clinicians in this case pre-doctoral dental students. It is a randomized clinical trial using a new Vinyl Polysiloxane (VPS) impression material 3M ESPE Imprint 3 Light Body and Aquasil Ultra LV, LD Caulk, another VPS impression material. To date, 110 patients at the University of Alabama in Birmingham School of Dentistry have been recruited. The patients were randomly assigned to two groups. The pre-doctoral dental students used one of the two products to create impressions for indirect fixed full-coverage restorations. Examiners evaluated the impressions based on the criteria of position of the tooth, type of preparation, preparation finish line, and gingival bleeding score. Researchers reported that Imprint 3 light body impression material produced clinically better first impressions compared to Aquasil Ultra LV. The study has yet to be concluded and further analysis will be completed, but they were able to confidently report the Imprint 3 light body impression material produced more clinically acceptable impressions with inexperienced operators. Burgess, University of Alabama at Birmingham Astra Tech Partnership Brings New Technology to Lava Milling and Design Customers News 3M ESPE and Astra Tech AB have created a global partnership. Now, 3M ESPE will offer Astra Tech s Atlantis patient-specific abutments to 3M ESPE Lava Crown and Bridges customers. The two companies have collaborated to develop an interface which will enable the 3M ESPE Lava Scan ST Design System to communicate directly with Astra Tech s Atlantis technology. This new development will make it possible for Lava Scan ST users to transfer digital scan information of the patients oral geometry to Astra Tech s Atlantis design and manufacturing facilities worldwide. Shipment of physical models will no longer be necessary, lowering the cost and reducing the overall turnaround time. This is an important step in 3M ESPE s strategy to enable end-to-end digital workflow for our customers, said Wayne Roen, Director of Digital Restorative Dentistry, 3M ESPE. The companies anticipate a commercial launch in the United States later in 2008 with other markets to follow. Working together, 3M ESPE and Astra Tech hope to further enhance the efficiency of dental laboratories with additional digital work flow, and to continue delivering innovation to the industry. 7
