Introducing Filtek LS Low Shrink Posterior Restorative News 3M ESPE announces its latest innovation in composite material technology, the Filtek LS Low Shrink Posterior Restorative System. This composite and dedicated adhesive is based on ring-opening silorane chemistry rather than methacrylate chemistry and provides a fundamental solution to the long-standing customer need for low shrinkage and minimum stress. The Filtek LS restorative system will be available in North America in April, Filtek Silorane Low Shrink Posterior Restorative was launched in Europe, Australia and New Zealand in October of Silorane Volumetric Shrinkage <1%* fig. 1 As silorane-based composite polymerizes, ring-opening monomers connect by opening, flattening and extending toward each other. The result is significantly less volumetric shrinkage compared to methacrylate-based composites. * <1% volumetric shrinkage tested by bonded disc method. fig. 2 As methacrylate-based composites cure, the molecules of these linear monomers connect by actually shifting closer together in a linear response. 2 Espertise Experts News Source A New Approach to Measuring Contact Angles for Hydrophilic Impression Materials Case Study An article recently published in the Journal of Prosthodontics revealed the results of a study conducted using a new method for investigating hydrophilicity of impression materials. The research was supported by a grant from 3M ESPE. Contemporary impression materials have a number of properties that contribute to clinical success. Hydrophilicity is critically important during working time, when the material flows and is in contact with moisture on the preparation and in the oral cavity. For this reason, most state-of-the-art impression materials claim to be hydrophilic. fig. 3 The Drop Shape Analysis System DSA 10 (Krüss GmbH, Hamburg, Germany) was used to analyze the hydrophilic properties of the unset polyether and VPS impression materials through contact angle measurements. Water contact angles are commonly used to test hydrophilic properties of impression materials after they have set, but not in the unset stage since it is difficult to measure on plastic surfaces. This study investigated the initial water contact angles of seven unset impression materials using commercially available equipment in an effort to determine whether polyether impression materials (3M ESPE Impregnum Impression Materials) have lower contact angles and are therefore more hydrophilic than VPS impression materials. The authors of this study developed a technique using commercially available equipment. This study was done with the Drop Shape Analysis System (DSA) 10 (Krüss GmbH, Hamburg, Germany), which was used to analyze the hydrophilic properties of the unset polyether and VPS impression materials through contact angle measurements. All impression materials were prepared according to manufacturer instructions. All were tested with variations of time, water volume and thickness of material. For each of the three variables, five trials were conducted for each featured material. The polyether impression materials tested were significantly more hydrophilic before, during, and after setting than that of VPS impression materials. Regardless of the amount of water in contact with the impression material, the polyether impression materials showed a significantly higher hydrophilicity in the unset stage than the VPS materials. The initial contact angle was not dependent on the thickness of material. All parameters, including variation of time, volume of water droplet and thickness of material, resulted in different absolute contact angles, but did not lead to a dramatic change in the ranking of the material with regard to this hydrophilic behavior. 3 Vanish 5% Sodium Fluoride White Varnish from OMNI Case Study Vanish 5% Sodium Fluoride White Varnish from OMNI, the first white varnish available to the dental profession, was recently evaluated by ADA Professional Product Review newsletter. The study involved 698 dentists who evaluated 12 different desensitizing products including fluoride varnishes, glutaraldehyde/hema and methacrylates. Participants scored products against six attributes: application method, directions for use, packaging, patient acceptance, treatment frequency and application time. Vanish, now the number one selling fluoride varnish, received extremely favorable responses and one of the highest overall scores. OMNI and 3M ESPE have brought a number of firsts to the market including the first unitdosed fluoride varnish, CavityShield, in The convenient packaging overcame product uniformity issues and potential contamination issues that plagued bulk-packaged fluoride varnishes for decades. Recently, 3M ESPE had the privilege to host a professional service team talent development meeting in St. Paul, Minnesota. Sixteen professional services colleagues from 14 countries in Latin America and Asia/Pacific met for intense business skills and technical training. The first week focused on strengthening business, sales and presentation skills. The second week s curriculum helped develop more in-depth knowledge about the categories of products in the division. Since more than 85% of the attendees were registered dentists, the discussion about products was detailed. Attendees interacted with product development experts from the laboratory to gain an even deeper understanding of 3M ESPE products. Brad Sauer (Executive Vice President for Health Care) and Jeff Lavers (3M ESPE Division Vice President and General Manager) brought their insights to this unique experience. Each attended luncheon meetings with the group. Participants had a chance to hear about plans for the future of 3M ESPE and to ask questions. Conversations like these keep vital information and new ideas flowing between 3M ESPE leaders, colleagues and our customers. 3

4 Espertise Experts News Source Lava Results Crowns and Bridges Marginal Fit Marginal fit is an important characteristic that can contribute to clinical performance. Having said that, the maximum tolerance needed to prevent damage of the pulp and/or development of secondary caries by intrusion of bacteria and toxins is still a matter of debate among many researchers. Nevertheless, the dentist and dental technician need to precisely control and optimize the fit of the restoration with the respective production technology used for fabrication. When using CAD/CAM technology, the fit can be set for each abutment tooth in the software (e.g., 3M ESPE Lava ), which customizes the marginal gap for the clinical situation. The accuracy and ability of all CAD/CAM technologies to implement the predetermined fit depends on the accuracy of the entire system from the scanning device, milling material and milling unit. In the case of pre-sintered ceramic (e.g., zirconia), the homogeneity of the material is especially important as it controls shrinkage during the final sintering process. The accuracy of the entire CAD/CAM system is a responsibility of the manufacturers. Different methods were used in the literature to determine the fit of a restoration, which made it difficult to compare the various studies. The first important step was done by Holmes et al. (1989) 1 who established uniform terminology including marginal gap, absolute marginal gap, vertical marginal gap, horizontal marginal gap, as well as over- and under-extension. (1989) 1 Several authors determined the gap of 3M ESPE Lava Crowns and Bridges restorations in comparison to other zirconia restorations fabricated with their respective CAD/CAM systems. Dr. A. Piwowarczyk and Prof. Lauer of the University of Frankfort published at the conference of the European division of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR, PEF) in a thorough analysis on the marginal gap and absolute marginal gap of four-unit zirconia bridges made out of Lava zirconia and by the Lava system in comparison to Cercon and DCS President bridges. Shannon et al., University of Iowa. 4 In summary, the 3M ESPE Lava CAD/CAM system in combination with the 3M ESPE Lava Zirconia results in an excellent fit of the restorations independent of the measure used. 7 The Future of Composites Symposium Heike Fürst, Marketing Communications Coordinator, 3M ESPE News The fifth 3M ESPE Espertise Dental Innovation Symposium entitled The Future of Composites was held in Munich at the hotel Bayerischer Hof from October 28 30, Over 240 dental opinion leaders attended the program, including 85 professors from Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The Symposium featured presentations by renowned European scientists on innovations in composite treatments as well as clinical results for 3M ESPE s newly launched composite material, Filtek Silorane Low Shrink Posterior Restorative. The most up-to-date research findings were presented in 15 lectures held by scientists from Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Iceland and Great Britain. The lecture program was rounded off with a thematic focus on dental adhesive materials for attaching dental crowns and bridges, with special emphasis on innovations, strategies and technologies. During the event, Symposium participants were given the opportunity to ask questions and collect information first hand. This provided a communication platform for dental professionals to exchange ideas on innovative technologies and materials in restorative dentistry. With programs such as the Espertise Symposium series, 3M ESPE continues to be a leader in the exchange of scientific information for dentists around the world. Lava Design Software 4.0 Upgrade Completed News Expanding the versatility of the 3M ESPE Lava System that integrates material science and advanced digital technologies, the new Lava Design Software 4.0 from 3M ESPE is a system upgrade that offers dental labs more CAD power to speed the design process and increase productivity. The intuitive, easy-to-use package now offers automation at several key stages, including automatic margin detection, automatic blockout function for undercuts, automatic correction of insertion path, virtual duplication for wax-ups and many other features. To boost productivity, scanning and design can now be done at the same time. The new nested scanning feature allows the user to scan multiple crowns, including bite registration, in one scan and then separate the individual cases into separate files, speeding up the scanning process, especially for simple coping cases. In addition, the new software allows the production of several more indications approved by 3M ESPE including implant abutments for a wide variety of implant systems *, inlay and onlay bridges, Maryland bridges, survey crowns, and 5 6 unit bridges with up to four pontics in the anterior region.
