18 ANNUAL DISTRICT-WIDE! WHAT ARE CAVITIES?: Carbohydrates from sugar and starch plus the bacteria in your mouth creates acid in your teeth. Over time this acid eats away at your teeth, forming holes known as cavities.! EAT WELL: Eating healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and fluoridated tap water keeps your teeth and body strong and healthy. Sugary and starchy foods promote bacteria that cause cavities, plaque and gum disease. ORAL HEALTH POSTER CONTEST THE L.A. TRUST 2016 Oral Health Poster Contest FACTS/TIPS Build your poster around ONE of these EIGHT ideas. Once you pick one, use at least some of these words and ideas to get your point across:! NO MORE DENTAL DISEASE: Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among American children. You can prevent tooth decay by following a daily oral health routine. Always brush your teeth two times a day for two minutes, floss between your teeth daily and see a dentist two times per year.! STAY FLOSSING!: Flossing is an essential part of taking care of your teeth and gums. Brushing your teeth without flossing is like only washing 70% of your body. To remove plaque and prevent gum disease, floss every day.! DRINK THE FROM THE SINK: Our community water contains optimally adjusted levels of fluoride, a mineral which occurs naturally in all water supplies. Fluoride is effective in reducing tooth decay so make sure to drink and cook with tap water from the sink or from water fountains.! DEVELOP A PARTNERSHIP: See your dentist twice a year. Regular dental visits will help you keep your teeth healthy and strong.! YOUR MOUTH IS THE GATEWAY TO YOUR BODY: The state of your oral health can be a window into your overall health. There are many ways your overall health is related to the health of your mouth, teeth and gums including heart disease, endocarditis, diabetes and others.! DON T USE TOBACCO Smoking significantly impacts oral health. Smoking cigarettes or using smokeless tobacco products increases the risk of oral and throat cancer; gum disease; bad breath; tooth discoloration; and so many more health problems. Smokers are three times more likely than non-smokers to lose all their teeth!
