Exercise 4. Read and translate the following text into Russian: My Specialty is the Dentist One of the most important members of the health team is the dentist. He is responsible for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the teeth and mouth. He must have a deep Knowledge of the structure, origin, growth, function and disorders of the oral cavity which deal with the medical, surgical and mechanical treatment in this area. Today if a person wants to become a dentist he or she should enter the dental faculty of the Medical Institute or Academy. Training there takes five years. Each year is divided into two terms. During the first three terms dental students study the same general subjects as the students of other medical faculties: human anatomy, physiology, biology, biochemistry and others. More hours are spent studying the anatomy of the head and neck area. From the fourth term at the departments of therapeutically dentistry and oral surgery they start learning manual skills necessary for a qualified dentist and become specialists in a definite number of medical procedures. From the third year they study such general clinical subjects as therapy, surgery, or skin diseases. It is important because the dentist is to realize the relationship of the mouth to other organs and systems and how general body diseases can be reflected by oral diseases. In their fifth year dental students study dentistry in detail to acquire necessary theoretical knowledge and go through the so-called internship in one of many branches of dentistry: oral surgery, orthodontics, orthopedics, periodontics and others. Besides during their academic years they have more practical hours learning manual skills in treating patients. First, they work as dental assistants and then start treating patients themselves. After graduation from the institute young dentists must spend a year as interns. Then they pass state examination in one of the special subjects only and become specialized doctors. Modern dentistry includes four different specialties: Oral surgery- it embraces various procedures in the oral cavity from tooth extraction to major surgery on the mouth and jaws. Therapeutically dentistry- it is a branch dentistry dealing with diseases of the teeth methods of their treatment. Orthopedic dentistry- it studies the methods of prosthetic dentistry. Pedodontics- this branch of dentistry concerns oral diseases in children, including orthodontics to train specialist in correcting dental occlusion and teeth positions.

3 At present all kinds of dental service are rendered in two types of curative establishments. The first type is the state dental clinic which is staffed with experienced professionals and equipped with all necessary instruments and devices to carry out all kinds of the treatment required. The doctors there apply modern techniques and methods of treatment. Usually if a patient has a medical insurance he receives dental treatment free of charge. But some expensive and complicated methods of investigation, diagnostics and treatment are to be paid. If the patient does not want to visit state institution he or she can go to a qualified dentist in one of numerous private dental surgeries. As a rule one to three dentists work there, and the visit is certainly paid. VOCABULARY EXERCISES Exercise 1.
