2 Background: Dental care is an important aspect of general health care. The burden of oral disease and needs of populations are in transition and oral health systems and scientific knowledge are changing rapidly.

4 World Health Organization (WHO) aims to reduce the impacts of oral diseases on general health and improve the general heath care of the community by 2020 (1). WHO has assigned top priority to oral health as a part of general health care which in turn leads to the integration of general heath and oral health (2).

5 Methods: In this descriptive study, information system of 5 dental faculties in Tehran, Shahid Beheshti, Isfahan, shiraz,tabriz were assessed. Data were gathered through observing and questioning by checklist and questionnaire tools. The analysis of data was conducted based on descriptive analysis in SPSS10.

6 Results: The study revealed that in order to optimize the present dental information system of Iran, it is necessary to data elements, information gathering techniques, Storage and retrieval system, process, data analysis. Information dissemination of the exciting system must be modified.

11 Conclusion: The existence of a high quality and dynamic dental information management system is critical. Therefore, the processes and rules on dental information management systems require more attention.
