1 UFCD Faculty Committee/Workgroup Annual Report Form 1) Indicate type of committee: Steering X Standing Workgroup/Ad hoc/sub- Committee Final Report X 2) Committee name: Curriculum Committee 3) Charge and/or responsibilities of the committee or workgroup Standing committee charge (as given in the UFCD s Constitution): As stated in the Constitution and Bylaws, it is the responsibility of the committee to evaluate, revise, and recommend policies to implement the pre-doctoral curriculum. As dean, I have empowered the committee to oversee all pre-doctoral curricular issues in the college. Additional charges from the Dean for (list all charges given by the Dean): 1. Participate in the Accreditation Self-Study including a review of current competency certifications. 2. Develop a detailed curriculum revision plan and timeline. 3. Appoint a Student Assessment Workgroup that aligns with the curriculum revision efforts. 4. Develop a completed cases clinical education grading model. 5. Complete evaluation of rotations and develop recommendations. 6. Finalize grading criteria for the Professionalism Stream Courses to include the faculty (TEAM leaders and al Course Directors) review of the student performance. Ongoing 1. Employ adult learning teaching and assessment principles including a greater emphasis on active learning strategies in and out of the classroom. 2. Continue to monitor Community-Based Program rotations and evaluations and review for any further action items. 3. Produce an annual report of committee activities and accomplishments. 4. Monitor proposed centralization of educational technology and support at the HSC IT services and identify potential integration of emerging UF technology resources, i.e. E-Learning, portfolios, etc. 5. Recommend potential programs for consideration by the Faculty Development Committee. Each standing faculty committee is charged with reviewing relevant outcome measures from the college s strategic plan. The measures which should be reviewed by the Curriculum Committee in include: D.M.D. students first time pass rate on NBDE Parts I and II D.M.D. students pass rate on Florida licensure exam DMD student confidence in 20 clinical competencies upon graduation (senior survey) Alumni periodic survey ( ) First time competency pass rate. DMD ADEA Senior Survey. Student satisfaction (Senior Exit Interviews). Number of DMD students accepted/applied to advanced education programs. Proportion of classroom clock hours in evidence-based practice and critical thinking/active learning.

6 The UF Office of the Provost and Warrington College of Business Administration present: FRIDAY, JUNE 13, 2014 Room 120, Hough Hall Dr. Larry Michaelsen [bio] Team-Based Learning ( Designing Group Work that Really Works 9:30 am 12:00 noon CAUTION: Group assignments can and, all too often, do more harm than good. The most common sign of trouble is when students (especially the better ones) feel like they have to choose between doing more than their fair share of the work or risk getting a bad grade. When that happens, the real cause usually isn t the students it s almost always what the teacher is asking them to do. In addition, even if they turn in a high quality product, many students will leave the experience with negative attitudes about group work that are likely to limit their ability to adapt to today s team-oriented workplace environments. In this session, you will engage in a series of activities that demonstrate why most problems with learning groups are caused by poorly designed assignments. In addition, you will learn about four keys that will enable you to design group assignments that: 1) are effective for developing students application and critical-thinking skills, 2) promote positive student attitudes about group work, 3) can be graded easily and fairly and, 4) can be used with any level of students and in classes of up to several hundred students. Getting Beyond Covering Content: A Key to Student Motivation and Success 1:30 pm 4:00 pm Teachers often face a dilemma based on two realities most students are: 1. Far more motivated (and successful) when they see how course content applies to their real world. 2. Bored by lectures but, unable to apply course content unless they know what the content is. This workshop will begin with a demonstration of a Readiness Assurance Process that is an effective approach for dealing with this dilemma by creating conditions that motivate the vast majority of students to complete pre-class reading assignments. This enables teachers spend most of the class time focusing on content applications without reducing the number of concepts that are covered. Following the demonstration, we will explore additional issues and concerns about using learning groups including: Building groups into self-managed learning teams with norms that promote high levels of individual preparation, content engagement and class attendance. 9 UF College of Dentistry Baseline Critical Thinking and Evidence-Based Dentistry s Spring 2014 The ECO database for Critical Thinking and Evidence Based Dentistry s was developed in Summer 2013 and is linked to the Course Schedule. Course director baseline information was gathered in Summer 2013, Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 in preplanning meetings. Attached is a complete list of courses by method.
