2 PROPORTION GAUGE The Proportion Gauge has the T-bar tip on one end and an In-line tip on the opposite end. The T-bar tip is used on teeth with normal alignment and the In-line tip is used for crooked or crowded teeth where the horizontal arm of the T-bar is obstructed by the rotated teeth. The instrument is used to measure the width and length of maxillary anterior teeth. The tip measurements have a predetermined ratio of about 78% (based on the study results on the average width, length ratio of the maxillary anterior teeth.) The gauges assist the clinician in diagnosing any tooth size discrepancies that require attention to correct and enhance patient aesthetics. All measurements are noted in millimeters. T-BAR TIP Vertical Bar: Length Measurement Horizontal Bar: Width Measurement 7 Incisal Guide: Starting point for measurements Measurements in mm On the vertical arm, the blue, red and black bands are 1.5mm wide and the two yellow bands are 1mm wide. On the horizontal arm, all the color bands are 0.5mm wide. T-bar tip is designed to measure the width (horizontal arm) and length (vertical arm) of a maxillary anterior tooth simultaneously. The instrument is color-coded with a preset width/length ratio of about 78%. A particular color band on the vertical arm should correspond to the same color band on the horizontal arm when placed on the tooth to help ensure that the tooth is in proportion. Measurements are as shown above. The most common width/length numbers for the central incisor (red band) /11mm, lateral incisor (blue band) 6.5/mm, and canine (yellow band) 7.5/9.5 mm. Occasionally clinicians may encounter small teeth, large teeth and extra large teeth. In such situations the recommended measurements will move down (one full band measurement) or up (one full band for large teeth and two full bands for extra-large teeth) from the normal measurements mentioned above. The instrument is linear in design and measurement.

3 T-BAR TIP IN USE Measure the central incisor first. Hold the Proportion Gauge using a pen grasp with the T-bar facing up. Once the incisal edge position is determined, rest the incisal stop of the tip on the incisal edge of the tooth to be measured. Center the tip on the tooth. For the central incisor, the length and width should be at the outer margin of the red band on the vertical and horizontal arm respectively. This ensures that the tooth is in correct proportion. Width and length discrepancies are evident if the corresponding color bands do not line up horizontally and vertically. 4 2) Canine measurements should be at the outer margin of the yellow bands between the blue and red bands. 7.5 Align the outer YELLOW markings 9.5 VARIATIONS IN TOOTH SIZE Small Teeth: The measurements move downward one full band from the normal measurements mentioned above on the vertical arm, and inward on the horizontal arm, respectively. Small central incisor measurements should be at the inner margin of the red bands both vertically and horizontally. Lateral incisors should be at the inner margin of the blue bands and canines should be at the inner margin of the yellow bands. CENTRAL CANINE LATERAL

5 Large Teeth: Measurements move upward one full band from the normal measurement on the vertical arm and correspondingly outward on the horizontal arm when compared to the normal recommended measurements. Large central incisor measurements should be at the inner margin of the black bands both horizontally and vertically. Lateral incisors should be at the inner margin of the red bands, and the canines at the outer margin of the red bands both horizontally and vertically. INNER MARGIN OF BLACK FOR CENTRAL OUTER MARGIN OF RED FOR CANINE INNER MARGIN OF RED FOR LATERAL Extra-Large Teeth: Measurements move upward 2 full bands from the central incisor upward and outward, respectively. Extra-large Central incisors should be at the outer black band both vertically and horizontally. Lateral incisors should be at the outer margin of the red bands and the canines should be at the inner margin of the black bands both horizontally and vertically. 6 IN-LINE TIP The In-line tip is designed to measure tooth width with its short arm and length with its long arm independently. It functions the same way as the T-bar except that the horizontal arm of the T-bar becomes the short arm of the In-line tip. The Vertical arm of both tips are the same. The In-line tip is indicated in cases of crowding or overlapping anterior teeth where the length and width cannot be measured simultaneously using the T-bar tip. Long Vertical Arm: Length Measurement Short Vertical Arm: Width Measurement Incisal Guide (Starting point for measurements) The tips are color coded with a preset width/length ratio of 78% A particular color band on the short arm representing the width corresponds to the same color band on the long arm representing the length. Measurements are indicated above. The width is measured first and then the corresponding color band on the longer arm is noted to make sure that the width and length are in proportion. IN-LINE TIP IN USE Measurements in mm On the long vertical arm, the blue, red and black bands are 1.5mm and the two yellow bands are 1mm. On the short vertical arm, all the color bands are 1mm. Measure the central incisor first. Hold the Proportion Gauge using a pen grasp with the In-line tip facing up. Orient the incisal guide as the starting reference to measure the width and corresponding length, respectively. Using the short arm, align the tip perpendicular to the long axis of the tooth to measure the width. In case of Central Incisor, the width should be at the outer margin of the red band.

7 Rotate the tip vertically and center the long arm of the tip parallel to the long axis of the tooth. Ensure the incisal guide is at the incisal edge. 8 VARIATIONS IN TOOTH SIZE Small Teeth: The measurements move downward one full band from the normal measurement on both arms due to the smaller size. Central incisor measurements should be at the inner margin of the red band on both arms. Lateral incisor should be at the inner margin of the blue band and canine at the inner margin of the yellow band. CENTRAL CANINE LATERAL Large Teeth: Measurements move upward one full band from the normal measurement on both arms. The central is recommended to be at the outer margin of the yellow band above the red band. Lateral incisor should be at the inner margin of the red band and the canine at the outer margin of the red band.

9 Extra-Large Teeth: Measurements move upward two full bands from the normal measurements on both arms. Central should be outer margin of the black band, lateral at the inner margin of the yellow band and canine at the outer margin of the yellow band below the black band. CLEANING AND STERILIZATION Color bands will wear with normal use; simply dispose the tip. Tips last for approximately 5-10 sterilization cycles. Replacement tips are available in packs of 3. For intended use only by dental professionals. Inspect, clean and sterilize before each use. Clean using an ultrasonic cleaner or thermo disinfector. Steam sterilize for at least 5 minutes at 273 F (134 C) or 20 minutes at 250 F (121 C). Do not heat above 302 F/150 C. Use recommended chemicals only. Do not disinfect with phenols. 10 CROWN LENGTHENING (CL) GAUGE: Crown Lengthening Gauge has the Biologic Periogauge (BLPG) tip on one end and the Papilla tip on the opposite end. The BLPG tip is used to achieve the proper clinical and biologic crown length during surgical crown lengthening procedures. Papilla tip is used to determine the aesthetically ideal position of the interdental papilla before the flap is closed and sutured.
