7 RADO AND DESIGN Design is an integral part of what Rado does, and is one of the reasons the brand has been awarded over 30 international design prizes. Rado has always focused on the exterior of its products, choosing a range of unusual materials to craft its groundbreak ing timepieces. Since its beginnings, Rado has aimed to create watches of long lasting beauty. Starting with the iconic scratch resistant DiaStar 1 in 1962, the mission has evolved to find ever lighter, more durable scratch resistant materials for use in watchmaking. From its first foray into the use of ceramic in 1986, Rado has developed the technology to produce innovative new designs in an ever growing array of high tech ceramic col ours and finishes. Recent design achievements include the debut of ceramic timepieces in deep blue and British racing green as well as the introduction of touch technology in ceramic watches. 9 RADO MILESTONES RADO GOLDEN HORSE The first watch collection under the Rado brand name. With the new name the global market could be approached with a func tional, water resistant stainless steel model; a well designed watch with an accessible price tag RADO INTEGRAL The first Rado watch to use high tech ceramic on the bracelet and an invisibly affixed metallised sapphire crystal. The flamboyant bracelet made the watch a 1980s style statement that communi cates so much more than just the time RADO DIASTAR 1 During the height of the Cold War came the DiaStar 1, marketed as the world s first scratch resistant watch, a revolution in watch making history. A tungsten carbide (hardmetal) case and sapphire crystal production methods were pioneered to achieve an instantly recognizable watch with a wide bezel that could withstand the most extreme situations and still come out looking new RADO CERAMICA The first Rado watch to use black high tech ceramic for the case and the bracelet, which together form a single unit. 11 RADO CERAMICA The first Rado timepiece in plasma high tech ceramic. White ceramic is transformed through a plasma carburising process. The ceramic then takes on a unique warm metallic shine without the use of metal RADO HYPERCHROME The complex monobloc case of the HyperChrome represents a breakthrough in technology as well as a step forward in design. PLASMA HIGH TECH CERAMIC Known for its striking and mysterious metallic brilliance, Rado s plasma high tech ceramic is forged in an oven at high temperatures. Gases activated at 20,000 C trans form finished white ceramic into a unique material with an otherworldly metallic shine but without the use of any metal. Although only the surface colour of the ceramic is changed as the warm grey metallic colour emerges from each piece, it will not fade over time, instead retaining its naturally scratch resistant shine for years to come.

102 Centrix Open Heart A unique east-meets-west timepiece, the Centrix Open Heart features a dial with symbolic elements that represent the Chinese Valentine s story. According to legend, two lovers separated by a cruel fate are able to meet once a year, on the seventh night of the seventh moon, when all the world s magpies fly together and form a bridge to reunite the star-crossed lovers for just one night.
