Portion Control Size Up Your Portions Along with proper meal planning, it s important for people with diabetes to practice portion control. The fact is, how much you eat is as important as what you eat. Learning to determine portion size is one of the most important and long-lasting skills one can learn in helping control diabetes. We often underestimate the amount of food on our plates, which can result in extra calories and carbohydrates. Always try to follow the suggested serving size within your meal plan. Weighing and measuring foods at home will help train your eyes to estimate portions and serving size when eating out. Here are several easy ways to estimate portions: One fist is approximately 8 fl oz of cold and hot beverages, or 1 cup of broccoli or mashed potatoes. One hand cupped is about 1/2 cup of pasta, rice, polenta, hot cereal, grits, fruit salad, beans, okra, tofu, or cottage cheese, or 1 ounce of nuts. Two hands cupped is about 1 cup of cold cereal, soup, salad, and mixed dishes like casseroles. = = = 1oz Two thumbs together is about 1 Tbsp of peanut butter, salad dressing, sour cream, mayonnaise, or dip. = Portion Control A medium apple or other fruit is about the size of a tennis ball A deck of cards is about 3 ounces of cooked meat, such as hamburger patty, chicken breast, or fish filet = = 16 17

Basic Nutrition Tips Tips for Healthy Eating There will be times when you may find that it s difficult to stick to your meal plan. Here are some basic tips to help you fit healthy eating into your busy lifestyle: Use sugar substitutes instead of regular table sugar Reach for diet soda instead of regular soda, and watch for added sugar in juice and powdered drinks Grab a piece of fruit as a tasty and sweet alternative to cookies, candies, and cakes Choose low-fat dairy and meat products Stop eating when you re satisfied, not stuffed Incorporate portion-controlled foods, like Glucerna Shakes, Cereal, and Bars, into your meal plan Keep in mind that eating healthy doesn t just happen. It takes time and effort. But you can do it! Importance of Physical Activity Getting enough exercise is another important factor in diabetes management. Physical activity is key to obtaining many health benefits, including better blood glucose control, weight loss, and prevention or delay of diabetes complications. Along with improved strength and endurance and a greater enjoyment of life, here are some other benefits of becoming more physically active: Lowered risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer Prevention of bone and muscle loss Lowered blood pressure Reduced stress Active Living 18 19

Active Living It may seem daunting to take that first step toward an exercise program but you don t have to change your entire lifestyle in one day. Building up gradually to improve your fitness level is a way to ease into activity. Here are some general exercise tips: Start slowly don t push yourself too hard. The activities you do should make you feel energized, not exhausted. Just 30 minutes of physical activity a day can make a difference. Your physical activity plan doesn t have to be high-tech or complex. Except for investing in a good pair of shoes, walking is free, takes no special skill or equipment, and can be adapted to your level of fitness and lifestyle more easily than other kinds of physical activity. Active Living Set modest short-term goals that will help keep you moving and motivated. These smaller successes can spur you to your ultimate success such as getting to your goal weight. Drink plenty of water and have a carbohydrate snack handy, like a Glucerna Snack or Meal Bar. Keep in mind that individual blood glucose response to exercise varies. Checking your blood glucose levels before and after physical activity can help you determine how to prevent low or high blood glucose levels, as well as showing you the advantages of exercise. Before beginning, or making any significant changes to, any exercise plan, consult with your health care professional. Think of what will motivate you to get on your feet and become more active. Your health care professional and the Glucerna Diabetes Control for Life Program will support and advise you, but you are in control

Active Living Tools for Active Living Whether you re planning to do an aerobic workout or a strengthening activity, DiabetesControlForLife.com allows you to choose from a variety of exercises and record what you did in your workout. Diebetes Control for Life has customizable activity plans allowing you to: Pick and choose activities that are right for you, to personalize your routine Read articles structured around your chosen Activity Plan, with messages about starting slowly, setting goals, tracking daily s teps, and gradually increasing activity levels Calculate how many calories you burn when participating in your favorite activities Monitoring Blood Glucose to Keep Tight Control For people with diabetes, it is very important to keep tight control of blood glucose levels, which means keeping the levels as close to normal as possible. Keeping tight control protects you against the beginning of diabetes complications, such as eye, kidney, heart, and nerve damage, and is one way to slow the rate of progression of these conditions. 1 Remember, monitoring also allows you to better gauge how certain foods affect your blood sugar levels. The primary goals of a diabetes care plan are to: Keep blood glucose readings at target levels: 90 to 130 mg/dl before meals Less than 180 mg/dl two hours after meals Maintain your hemoglobin A1C levels at 7% or less Monitoring Consult your health care professional before beginning any exercise program

Monitoring When to Check While each person s blood glucose testing schedule is slightly different based on his or her medications and lifestyle, many people test at common points during the day. Here are some examples of when people are advised to test: Fasting blood glucose testing: Test in the morning upon waking, before eating, drinking, exercising or taking any medications Pre-meal testing: Test just before eating, especially if using insulin or oral medications to help control glucose Postprandial (after-meal) testing: Commonly tested one to two hours after a meal Bedtime testing: Work with your health care professional to determine the best time for this test Tools for Monitoring Blood Glucose Levels The free monitoring tools at DiabetesControlForLife.com make it easy for you to track information about your glucose monitoring online. These printable logbooks can paint a picture of how food, exercise, medication, and/or insulin affect your glucose results, and help your health care professional determine if your diabetes care plan is working.
