Advantages: Helps to monitor & control diabetes daily Helps to respond appropriately to glucose level Many studies have proved beyond doubt that self monitoring of blood glucose was associated with decreased diabetes related complica:ons SMBG converts therapy compliance to therapy adherence. Increased Dr + Pa:ent partnership SMBG is an integral part of diabetes care regimen.

3 My meter doesn t match the laboratory s results. My test results aren t consistent. My test results o5en showed too high or low reading. Is my meter accurate?

4 There is a difference between Lab vs Meter reading When you Compare Meter & Lab results, The results you obtain from your meter may differ to an extent from lab results This is due to the fact that oxygen content in the capillary blood is higher than that of venous blood Thereby, the reading in a meter which uses capillary blood is always higher than that of lab results which uses venous blood. As per standards the difference between Lab & meter readings can be 20%

6 My test results are not consistent SMBG needs to be prac:ced as it is an art. And like any art form, you need to master it. 90% of variance in reading occurs due to improper technique in conduc:ng the test Ini:ally while performing the test, varia:on in reading may occur due to inaccurate usage or lack of prac:ce. However, over a period of :me with regular prac:ce & usage perfec:on would be achieved

7 Points to be considered a. Nature of diet: Low carbohydrate diet will show low level of BG, high carbohydrate diet will show high level of BG. b. Physical aclvity: Blood Glucose levels tested aser physical exer:on like even a brisk walk can change the blood glucose levels dras:cally. c. Overall health of the palent: An anemic pa:ent with low RBC count will show slightly higher reading and vice- a- versa d. Timing of blood glucose teslng: ASer food but before taking medica:ons readings will always be high in spite of being on proper medica:ons.

9 SOP that needs to be followed while conduclng a test Be calm, composed & relaxed while performing the test Wash your hands and dry them thoroughly ASer taking out the strip close the vial immediately When opening the vial for the first :me, write the day and month on the vial Once opened the vial has to be used within 3 months The blood drop is to be touched at the absorbent hole. En:re window has to turn red with blood Avoid touching other parts of the strip other than the handle

10 SOP that needs to be followed while conduclng a test Make sure the code number displayed on meter screen, matches with the code number on the test strip vial Massage the finger:p gently in an upwardly fashion to ensure proper blood circula:on and proper test Golden rule : Always wipe away the first drop of blood as it may contain Lssue fluids which might show wrong readings. Thereby always take the second drop of blood If you do not apply a blood sample within 3 minutes, the meter will turn itself off. You must remove the test strip and insert it back into the meter to restart the procedure

11 SOP that needs to be followed while conduclng a test If the finger is massaged vigorously aser a very light prick, the chances are more :ssue fluids will ooze out and give abnormal results. Do not smudge the blood drop, if this happens then the capillary ac<on will not be proper and thus consecu<ve readings will vary

13 Strip Storage Store the test strip vials in a cool and dry place Keep away from direct sunlight and heat ASer removing the test strip, immediately close the vial Touch the test strip with clean and dry hands Store the test strips in the original vial only Discard the test strip aser 90 days of opening the vial Do not bend, cut or alter the test strip in any way.

14 Factors that affect glucose meter performance Hematocrit: this is the amount of red blood cells in the blood. Pa:ents with higher hematocrit values will usually test lower for blood glucose Other substances: May interface with your tes:ng process. These include uric acid, glutathione and ascorbic acid Al;tude, temperature and humidity : Can cause unpredictable effects on glucose results.
