Ask yourself these questions s you re pcking to mke sure you re prepred: Wht will I need if the temperture increses or decreses? How likely is this to hppen? Wht will I need if it is windy? Will I just need windbreker or extr wrm lyers? Wht will I need if it rins? Wht bout if it snows? Will I be moving between ltitudes or stying in plce? If I will be moving up or down mountin, wht will I need? Wht will I need if the humidity increses? Wht will I need if the sun comes out stronger or decreses? You wnt to be prepred for ny potentil wether chnge, but you do not wnt to overpck s you re crrying everything you need. Be sure to be prepred, but lso be relistic. He hoped tht the pledge would be used by citizens in ny country, so it originlly sid: "I pledge llegince to my Flg nd the Republic for which it stnds, one ntion, indivisible, with liberty nd justice for ll." In 1923, the phrse "the Flg of the United Sttes of Americ" ws dded, but it wsn't until President Eisenhower encourged Congress to dd the words "under God" to the pledge in 1954 tht the pledge becme wht it is known s tody: "I pledge llegince to the flg of the United Sttes of Americ, nd to the republic for which it stnds, one ntion under God, indivisible, with liberty nd justice for ll." Chpter 9 Physicl Fitness PO.9 Fitness, Helth, nd First Aid EO.1 Identify the definition, importnce, nd components of physicl fitness. EO.2 Commit to personl physicl fitness progrm. EO.3 Pss the Young Mrines Physicl Fitness Test. EO.4 Understnd the importnce of bsic first id. In the following pges you will find the bsic informtion you need to begin nd mintin personl physicl fitness progrm. These guidelines re intended for the verge helthy individul. Mke sure to check with your prents nd your doctor before beginning ny sort of fitness progrm. Also, be sure to work with Senior nd Advnced Young Mrines nd your unit stff members to mke sure the progrm you crete is just right for you. EO.1 Identify the Definition, Importnce, nd Components of Physicl Fitness Physicl fitness is to the humn body wht fine-tuning is to n engine. It enbles us to perform up to our potentil. Fitness cn be described s condition tht helps us look, feel nd do our best. More specificlly, it is: The bility to perform dily tsks vigorously nd lertly, with energy left over for enjoying leisure- time ctivities nd meeting emergency demnds. It is the bility to endure, to ber up, to withstnd stress, to crry on in circumstnces where n unfit person could not continue, nd is mjor bsis for good helth nd well-being. Physicl fitness involves the performnce of the hert, lungs, nd the muscles of the body. Since wht we do with our bodies lso ffects wht we cn do with our minds, fitness influences, to some degree, qulities such s mentl lertness nd emotionl stbility. As you undertke your fitness progrm, it s importnt to remember tht fitness is n individul qulity tht vries from person to person. It is influenced by ge, sex, heredity, personl hbits, exercise, nd eting prctices. You cn t do nything bout the first three fctors. However, it is within your power to chnge nd improve the others were needed. You need to consider those first three fctors though when choosing which components of physicl fitness you wnt to include in your own routine. The components of physicl fitness re: 24 YOUNG MARINES

27 Crdiorespirtory endurnce. This is the bility to deliver oxygen nd nutrients to tissues nd to remove wstes over sustined periods of time. Long runs nd swims re often used to mesure this component. Musculr Strength. Musculr strength is the bility of muscle to exert force for brief period of time. Upper body strength, for exmple, cn be mesured by vrious weight-lifting exercises. Musculr Endurnce. Though this lso reltes to your muscles, musculr endurnce is the bility of muscle or group of muscles to sustin repeted contrctions or to continue pplying force ginst fixed object. Pushups re often used to test endurnce of rm nd shoulder muscles. Flexibility. This is the bility to move joints nd use muscles through their full rnge of motion. The sit-nd-rech test is good mesure of flexibility of the lower bck nd bcks of the upper legs. Flexibility is importnt for proper movement nd to keep you from injuring yourself. Note: Body composition is often considered component of fitness. It refers to the mkeup of the body in terms of len mss (muscle, bone, vitl tissue, nd orgns) nd ft mss. The mount of ft in your body is n indiction of fitness, nd the right types of exercises will help you decrese body ft nd increse or mintin muscle mss. You should consider your body composition when setting fitness gols nd when choosing certin exercises. EO.2 Commit to Personl Physicl Fitness Progrm The decision to crry out physicl fitness progrm cnnot be tken lightly. It requires lifelong commitment of time nd effort. Exercise must become one of those things tht you do without question, like bthing nd brushing your teeth. Unless you re convinced of the benefits of fitness nd the risks of living n unhelthy lifestyle, you will not succeed. Ptience is essentil when developing physicl fitness. It s importnt not to try to do too much too soon, to slowly build up your strength nd endurnce, nd to not quit before you hve chnce to experience the rewrds of improved fitness. Physicl fitness is not something tht cn be gined over night especilly when you hven t committed to fitness progrm or routine in the pst. With ptience nd persevernce though, the helth benefits re worth it. Before strting ny fitness progrm or routine, mke sure you re in good helth. If you hve not done much forml exercise or if you hve helth problems, sk your prents whether you should visit doctor before beginning physicl fitness progrm. Setting Fitness Gol To begin creting fitness progrm, hve Senior or Advnced Young Mrine or Adult Volunteer help you set fitness gol: Set gol. The first step in creting fitness progrm is to set fitness gol. Think bout the things you do dily or the types of ctivities you would like to do better. Do you wnt to run fster? Would you like to be ble to do more push-ups or sit-ups? Do you need to increse your flexibility? A good plce to strt is the Young Mrines PFT or Physicl Fitness Test (see PO.2 for more informtion). Is there some re where you need to improve? Write your gol down on fitness trcking chrt so tht you cn lwys see it. When setting your gol, remember to be SMART: RECRUIT GUIDEBOOK 25

28 S: Is it Specific? Do you know exctly wht your gol is? M: Is it Mesurble? Attch some numbers to your gol. Exmple: decrese my run time by thirty seconds or do ten more push-ups. A: Is it Achievble? Bsed on your current level of fitness, is this something you cn ccomplishin the time you ve set for yourself? R: Is it Relevnt? Will this gol help you be better Young Mrine? T: Is it Time Limited? Cn this gol be ccomplished in resonble mount of time? Hve you set time limit? Exmple: By the next PFT.
