In order to make your experience with LifeCore the best it can be, please review the enclosed user s manual prior to assembly and first use. 4 Safety Instructions & Warnings The LC-985VG Elliptical is designed and manufactured to meet or exceed all domestic and international safety standards. However, certain precautions need to be followed when operating any exercise equipment. General safety instructions: 1. It is important to consult your physician before any exercise program. 2. Pregnant women should consult with their physician before beginning any exercise program. He/she can help determine the exercise program that is the most appropriate for your age and physical condition. 3. If you experience dizziness, nausea, chest pains or other abnormal symptoms during exercise, stop the exercise session immediately. Consult your physician before continuing your exercise. 4. Keep your hands and feet away from all moving parts. 5. Keep children away from the equipment. Hands and feet may get caught in the pedals or other moving parts, which could result in serious injury. 6. Always wear proper clothing and shoes when exercising. Drink plenty of fluids when exercising. 7. Always stretch and warm up before starting any exercise program. 8. Never operate this unit if it is damaged or broken. Contact your authorized dealer for service. 9. Place your equipment on a solid, level surface when in use. 10. Place your unit in an area with enough clearance to operate the equipment. 11. Make sure all components are fastened securely at all times. Product safety instructions: 1. Start your exercise program gradually. Exercise only for a few minutes the first day to let your body adjust to the new exercise. 2. Slowly increase your exercise time and intensity over the first two weeks. If you increase your intensity too rapidly, or fail to warm up properly, you can increase the risk of injury. 3. Use of this machine with worn or weakened parts, may result in injury to the user. We strongly suggest replacing it immediately. Use only the accessory attachments recommended by the manufacturer. 4. Keep clothing free of moving parts. Keep children and fingers away from moving parts. 5. Perform proper maintenance as recommended in this manual. 6. Save this manual for future reference. Page 3

5 Assembly Instructions Step 1: Clear a big enough working space before unpacking your LC-985VG Elliptical. Step 2: a) Use a sharp knife, open the carton and lay it flat on the floor. b) Remove all loose components. Step 4: a) Assemble the Rear Stabilizer (003) with the same 2 bolts (308) and 2 washers (403) and tighten firmly. Note: To protect the Elliptical while assembling, we suggest keeping the protective packing Step 4: material until it is assembled completely. Step 3: a) Lift the rear of the machine off the floor and slide a polystyrene block under the rear end of the machine. b) With the rear end of the machine now raised off the floor, remove the protective polystyrene. c) Undo 2 bolts (308) and remove the transportation tube. Step 5: a) Remove all polystyrene blocks. b) With another person helping you, carefully lift the Upright Tube (004) until it is vertical while the other person joins the plugs of the Computer Cable (703) to Motor with Cable (701) as shown in the diagram below. Then slide the Upright Tube into the Main frame (001). Pay attention to the wires as to not cut or damage them while fitting the upright tube to the main frame. Page 4

6 Step 6: a) Loosely assemble 6 bolts (302) and washers (401) into Main Frame (001). Rotate the Foot Pedal Tube (011 & 012) at least two times to correctly align the Upright Tube (004), then firmly tighten 6 bolts. b) Slide down the Hat Cover (111) and push firmly. Step 8: a) Assemble the Front Stabilizer 9002) with 2 bolts (308) and 2 washers (403) and tighten firmly. b) Remove the polystyrene block and discard. c) Remove 2 bolts (301) from Upright Tube (004). Align Water Bottle Holder (401) and fasten with the same 2 bolts. Step 7: a) Remove the front polystyrene and place it under the front end of the machine to lift it off the floor. Step 9: a) Feed both the Computer Cable (703) and Hand Pulse Cable (733) out through the top of the Stationary Handle Bar (013) then slide the Stationary Handle Bar into the Upright Tube (004). b) Secure with 3 bolts (302) and 3 washers (401). Before tighten make sure the Stationary Hand Bar is correctly positioned. Page 5

7 Step 10: Slide the Adjustable Foot Pedal (115) onto the left and right Foot Pedal Tube (011 & 012). Secure with ADJUATBLE Foot Pedal Knob (116) and tighten firmly. Note: The Adjustable Foot Pedal can be adjusted to your personal preference, but we suggest that you start with the middle setting number 3. Step 12: a) Connect the Computer Cable (703) and Hand Pulse Cable (733) to the Computer (716). b) Feed the excess cables into the hold in the Stationary Hand Bar (013). c) On the top of the Stationary Handle Bar (013) is the computer plate. Position the Computer (716) on the computer plate and secure with 4 bolts 9310). Step 11: a) Insert the Top Pivot Cover (146) into Dual Action Handle (007). b) Insert the Dual Action Handle (007 & 008) into the top of Dual Action Arm (005 & 006) note stickers. c) Secure with 4 bolts (306) and 4 washers (401) and 4 nuts (200) and tighten firmly but DO NOT over tighten. Step 13: a) Connect the AC adapter (712) into the main power socket. b) Connect the Adapter into the Adapter socket at the rear of the machine. c) The Computer should now be working. If not, then re-plug all the Computer Cables as show in Step 5 & 12. Page 6

8 Setting Up Your Elliptical Height Adjuster Cap Important: Clear a workout area before setting up your Elliptical. Ensure the floor is solid and level. 1) To stabilize your Elliptical, make sure the Left and Right Front Stabilizer Wheel Caps (112 & 113) are touching the ground. 2) Determine which side of the Rear Stabilizer (3) is off the ground. To adjust the appropriate Height Adjusted Cap with Foot (114 & 119). 3) With the side of your foot, rotate the Height Adjuster Cap with Foot in a Clockwise direction = Down. Footpedal Adjustment Extra large fully Adjustable Footpedals with non-slip mat for different foot positions and workout intensities. 1) Loosen 2 Adjustable Footpedal Knobs (116). 2) Slide the Adjustable Footpedal (115) to your desired setting using the number labels as a guide. 3) Tighten firmly both Adjustable Footpedal Knobs. 9 Feet Position The Elliptical Footpedals are extra long allowing variable foot positions depending on your preference. The further back your feet are on the Footpedal, the greater the vertical height of the elliptical motion and the harder the workout. Begin with your feet in the most forward position and move your feet to the position that feels most comfortable and best suits your capabilities. Handlebars The Elliptical comes with two Dual Pulse Sensors on Stationary Handlebar. Important: Always hold the Stationary Handlebar when getting ON and OFF. First time users should familiarize themselves with the Stationary Handlebar first, and then progress to the Dual Action Handlebars. Once you have familiarized yourself with using the Elliptical, you can progress to using the Dual Action Handlebars to provide a total body workout. Hands can be positioned on the Dual Action Handlebars at the most appropriate position for your height and arm length. Page 8

10 Transportation & Storage 1) Move the front of the machine and ensure Dual Action Arms (007 & 008) are parallel with one Foot Pedal at the top of Elliptical Disk and other at the bottom. 2) Grasp the Stationary Handlebar with both hands and pull back, tipping the machine towards you. 3) Once balanced, wheeling the machine is made easy with the special soft PVC Tires on the Wheels to protect your floors & carpet. Correct Exercise Guide Getting on Safely Important: Care should be taken when getting ON or OFF your Elliptical. Please follow the correct procedure below. 1) Ensure the Left Footpedal is in the lowest position. 2) Grasp the Stationary Handlebar with both hands. 3) Rotate your left foot on the Left Footpedal and get secured. 4) Lift your right foot over machine and place on right Footpedal. 5) Get balanced and begin your workout. 11 Correct Position Always try and use the Elliptical in a rhythmical and smooth motion. Your body should be in an upright position so that your back is straight. Keep your head up to minimize neck and upper back strain. 1. Forward & Reverse The Elliptical can be used in a forward or reverse motion. When going in reverse, bend your knees inwards slightly as this will put more emphasis on the buttocks and hamstrings. 2. Basic Upright Handlebar: Stationary or Dual Action Muscles used: Thigh, Calf, Hamstring and Buttocks This position utilizes all the major muscle groups. Keep your body in an upright position with your head up. 3. Hamstrings & Buttocks Handlebar: Stationary Muscles used: Thigh, Calf, Hamstring and Buttocks Leaning back in a sitting position concentrates the workout on the hamstrings and buttocks. 4. Thigh & Calf Handlebar: Stationary Muscles used: Thigh, Calf, Hamstring and Buttocks Leaning forward on the Elliptical, concentrates the workout on your thighs (quadriceps) and calves. Page 10

12 Console Operation Instructions Please read the console operation instruction thoroughly and get familiar with the console layout. Practice using this console before you start in order to get a better understanding of the functions. Below is the console layout and detailed operation instructions. Make sure the console is powered-up before you start using this console. This product is powered by AC adapter. The LCD will be fully lit and ready for an entry. If the LCD display is illegible or only partial segments are displayed; then reboot the console. Disconnect the power for approximately 15 seconds and connect it again. 1. 13 2. DISPLAYS When it first powers up, you can set the current time and date. The information will be stored in the console and displayed during power save mode. The console will prompt you through the setting process; use UP/DOWN knob to adjust the setting and ENTER to confirm. Power save mode: If no key is pressed, no RPM or pulse is detected for 4 minutes; the console will shut down and enter power save mode to save power. The console will display current date, time and room temperature. To resume, simply press a key or pedal again. a. Dot matrix profile window: Displays program names and user setting during program setting and program profile during program executing. For resistance profile display: There are 20 columns of LCD representing 20 segments of time; each segment time = total program time divided by 20 columns. During exercising, a column of LCD will blink to indicate the time segment you are currently in and show your workout progress. There are also 16 rows of LCD representing 16 levels of resistance. Each row represents 1 level of resistance. The appropriated row of LCD will light up when you adjust the resistance level. b. Data display windows: There are 6 data display windows displaying Time, Speed/RPM. Distance, Calories, Watt and Pulse. During program setting, the appropriated data window will blink to indicate which data you are setting currently. Rotate the UP/DOWN knob to adjust the value and ENTER key to confirm the value. Note: 1. Speed/RPM data window will switch displaying each for few seconds back & forth. 2. Setting a number besides 0 in the data display, the console will treat it as target goal and will count the number down. It it s set at 0, it will count up. c. Big data window: All of above data will be displayed in this window also in a bigger format. It displays one at a time for few seconds before switch to the next one. 3. KEYS: There are 5 function keys for program operation. a. START/STOP key: Pressing the START/STOP key once will execute the programs and all data will start counting. Pressing the START/STOP key one more time will enter program pause mode and all data will stop counting. To exit pause mode, simply press START/STOP one more time to resume program. b. RESET key: If you are in the middle of a program, you will have to pause the program first before you can reset the console. Pressing the RESET key once will reset the program back to program selection function. You can select a different program under the same user profile. Pressing and holding the RESET key for a couple of seconds will reset the console back to the beginning of the setting sequence: user profile selecting. Page 12

14 c. ENTER key: Press ENTER key to confirm the program setting, selection or data entry. d. UP/DOWN knob: Rotate the UP/DOWN knob to go to the next user profile setting; next program selection; adjusting data entry during program setting or level adjusting during program execution. e. RECOVERY key: This is a function designed to see how much time it takes for the heart to recover after a workout and therefore recommends a fitness level. The program will take 60 seconds to figure out your fitness level and present a fitness score. Press RECOVERY key after a workout, the time display will start counting down from 60 seconds and pulse display will display your current heart rate. Do not press any key or row during the 60 second period. After 60 seconds, the dot matrix display will show your fitness score. Below is a chart for the fitness level vs. score. PROGRAMS a. User profile: Before picking a program to start; it s recommended to set up your user profile first. It will ensure workout data calculation is more accurate and future workouts are more convenient. There are 4 user spaces for saving user profiles: U1 U4; user information will be saved permanently unless user changes it. In power save mode, simply press ENTER key once to enter User selection mode. User number will be displayed at the dot matrix display. Rotate the UP/DOWN knob to pick a desired user number (U1-U4) and press ENTER to confirm. Once you pick out a number, the message display will prompt you the profile setting sequence. Use UP/DOWN knob to adjust the value and ENTER to accept. After setting is completed, the last ENTER key pressed will enter program selection. Program category select: There are lots of programs for you to choose: Manual, 12 Program Profiles, 4 Heart Rate Control Programs, User Profile and Watt program. The program name will be displayed on the message window and program profile will be displayed on the dot matrix window. Rotate the UP/DOWN knob to select a desired program category and ENTER to confirm. After user profile is set up, the 1st program category name will be scrolling at the dot matrix window. Rotate the UP/DOWN knob to select a desired program category and ENTER to confirm. To go back to the program category selection mode, simply press RESET key once; the console will reset back to selection mode. Page 13

15 Note: After program is selected, you can press START/STOP anytime to jump start the program with preset value. The console will use default values or previous entered value to start the program. b. Manual program: After you enter Manual program, the next step is setting up resistance level. Dot matrix profile will light up the 1 st row; rotate the UP/DOWN knob to adjust the level from 1 to 16 and ENTER to confirm. You can also adjust the resistance anytime during program execution. After level entry, time window will flash with 00:00 or last entered time for adjustment. After time entry, the Manual program set up is now completed; press START/STOP to begin this program. Note: Manual program can also work as a goal training program for Distance; Calories & Pulse. (Pulse goal will work just like Target HR program). For the goal program set up; please make sure you only enter the value for the desired goal and enter 0 for other values. For example, enter 2.0 miles for Distance value and 0 for others; this will start the program as Distance goal program. The time will start counting up and the timer will stop when you reach the 2.0 mile goal. Please keep in mind, if you enter multiple values during set up, it will work as a multiple goals program and whenever a goal is reached, the timer will stop. c. Programs (Preset profile programs): After you enter the Program category; the 1 st program: P1 will be scrolling on the dot matrix window. Rotate the UP/DOWN knob to move through 12 preset programs, refer to program graphic below the main display for profile details. Press ENTER to confirm the profile. Below is the program profile detail: After you selected a desired profile; the next step is selecting a profile difficulty level. The dot matrix profile window will display the profile and big data window will light up appropriated level; rotate the UP/DOWN knob to adjust the level and ENTER to confirm. After level entry, time window will flash with 0:00 or last entered time for adjustment. After time entry, the program set up is now completed; press START/STOP to begin this program. Page 14

16 d. H.R.C. program: H.R.C. programs are based off of user profile information. Heart rate control programs are designed to keep you training at your chosen heart rate level. Console will adjust the resistance level automatically to ensure the target heart rate is achieved and maintained during the entire program. Note: A heart rate monitoring device must be used for the program to work. It is also important to consult your physician before performing any Heart Rate based training program. There is also a heart symbol ( ) inside the pulse window which blinks every time it picks up a heart rate signal from the heart rate device. There are 4 H.R.C programs: 55%, 75%, 90% and TAG (Target Heart Rate). After you enter the H.R.C category; the next step is to confirm your age. Rotate the UP/DOWN knob to adjust and ENTER key to confirm. After age confirmation, it s time to pick up your H.R.C program. i. TAG: Target heart rate program: After you select the TAG program, the next step is to set up your heart rate goal. The Pulse window will blink with the pulse value; rotate the UP/DOWN knob to adjust the value and ENTER to confirm. After pulse entry, time window will flash with 0:00 or last entered time for adjustment. After time entry, the program set up is now completed. Press START/STOP to begin this program. ii. 55%; 75% & 90% max heart rate program: These programs will calculate your target heart rate with your entered age & the percentages automatically; refer to Calculating Target Heart Rate for details. When the program name appears; its calculated heart rate will be displayed on the big data window and Pulse window. If you press the ENTER key to select one of these 3 programs; the next step is setting up program time. After time entry, the program set up is now completed. Press START/STOP to begin this program. Caution: While increasing your heart rate is an important part of exercise, it is also important that your heart rate is not too high. To be safe, we suggest that you start your workouts at the 60% gentle level and increase your heart rate levels as your fitness improves. e. User Profile program: This program is designed for users to build the program profile segment by segment before exercising. After you select the User Profile program; the next step is to set up the program profile. The 1 st segment LCD on the dot matrix window will start blinking and waiting for an entry. Rotate the UP/DOWN knob to adjust the level. Press the ENTER key to confirm and go to next segment and so on. Press the START/STOP key at anytime to start the program. The remaining segments will start with resistance level 1 or previous entered levels. f. WATT program (constant power program): Watt (power) is determined by speed & resistance. This program is designed to let you set up your watt goal. The console will automatically adjust the resistance level according to your speed to maintain your watt goal. Page 15

17 After you select the WATT program; the next step will be to set up your watt goal. The Watt/Calories window will flash a number; rotate the UP/DOWN knob to adjust the value and ENTER to confirm. The range of watt is After watt entry, time window will flash with 0:00 or last entered time for adjustment. After time entry, the program set up is now completed; press START/STOP to begin this program. Calculating Target Heart Rate Your target heart rate, the intensity needed to improve cardiovascular fitness, depends primarily on your age and not your state of fitness. It is calculated as a percentage of your maximum heart rate, estimated as 220 minus your age. It is most effective to train at your target heart rate between 60% and 85% of your maximum heart rate; referred to as Training Zone. In order to get the most accurate reading, it is recommended to enter your age before your workout. Error Message Guide If the computer detects an error, it will display the text E2. If the following solutions fail to correct the problem, then contact your dealer for assistance. Problem: No motor detected. Solution: Reconnect all cable plug connections, refer to assembly instructions. Problem: Software failure. Solution: Reboot the computer. Disconnect the power for approximately 15 seconds by disconnect the plug-in adapter. Page 16

18 Care and Maintenance Your Elliptical is made of the highest quality materials, it is still important that you take care of your Elliptical on a regular basis. Your Elliptical is for indoor use only and should NOT be used or stored in damp area. Wipe all perspiration from your Elliptical after each use. For Safety, inspect your Elliptical on a regular basis, we suggest every 2-3 weeks. Special Attention to Components Most Susceptible to Wear Dual Action Handle Bar These parts are assembled by the consumer and should be checked regularly. Make sure that all nuts and bolts are tight and firm. Stationary Handle Bar These parts are assembled by consumer and should be checked regularly. Make sure that all nuts and bolts are tight and firm. Foot Pedals These parts are assembled by consumer and should be checked regularly. Make sure that all nuts and bolts are tight and firm. Stabilizers These parts are assembled by consumer and should be checked regularly. Make sure that all nuts and bolts are tight and firm. The 3 Pivot Points All Pivot Points are a special design, incorporating a space age plastic with lubricate greased by the Manufacturer & will last a lifetime under normal use. If you wish to grease the 3 Pivot Points, use good quality grease that is friendly to plastic (some greases destroys plastic). Disconnect the Foot Pedal Tube and the Dual Action Arms, grease the moving parts and reassemble. All Fasteners (Nuts, Bolts, Screws and Clips) Regularly check tightness of nuts, bolts, screws and clips etc. Page 17

19 Warranty Card LC-985VG Elliptical This Limited Warranty applies in the United States to products manufactured or distributed by LifeCore Fitness, Inc. under the LifeCore brand name. The warranty period for the original purchaser is (lifetime) on the frame against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and conditions (excluding expendable parts such as paint & finish). Home 5 years parts, 1 year labor warranty against manufacturer defects. This warranty does not cover wear and tear items such as, but not limited to, transportation wheels, foot pedals, rubber grips, plastic end caps, scratched parts, broken covers, and cosmetic damage. Wear items pertain to components that might need to be replaced due to normal wear and tear as a result of normal usage. Labor warranty does not cover improper installation, alterations and/or modifications, misuse, abuse, accident, improper maintenance, noises such as: squeaks, clunks, thumps from a result of poor or lack thereof preventive maintenance. LifeCore warrants that the product you have purchased for personal, family household use from LifeCore, or from an authorized LifeCore reseller, is free from defects in materials or workmanship under normal use during the warranty period. Your remaining warranty can also be transferred to another purchaser, as long as the original purchaser has previously registered their product with LifeCore, and submits a letter to LifeCore Fitness s warranty registration department to the address below, acknowledging the transaction and has the new owners name, address and phone number along with the serial number of the product, this must be done within 30 days of resale. During the warranty period, the original purchaser s remaining warranty is transferrable, only one transfer during the warranty period is allowed. In order to validate the warranty this product must have been registered through LifeCore Fitness Inc., and/or a copy of the proof of purchase, transferred warranty letter, and serial number must be presented at time of service. If these items are not presented at the time of requesting parts or service LifeCore Fitness Inc. will not cover any warranty set forth. During the warranty period LifeCore will at no additional charge, repair or replace (at LifeCore option) the part or product if it becomes defective, malfunctions, or otherwise fails to conform with this Limited Warranty under normal personal use as determined by a LifeCore technician. Any labor cost above the amount allocated by LifeCore is the responsibility of the original purchaser. If a product is shipped, delivered or transported to an area that is not a LifeCore Fitness Inc s distribution area or is out of a serviceable area, it is the purchaser s sole responsibility to find service and pay for any fees associated with servicing of a product out of LifeCore Fitness distribution or serviceable area. To obtain warranty service, you must contact the original place of purchase. In repairing the product, LifeCore may replace defective parts, or at the option of LifeCore, serviceable used parts that are equivalent to the new parts in performance. All exchanged parts and products replaced under this warranty will become the property of LifeCore. LifeCore reserves the right to change manufacturers of any parts to cover any existing warranty. Any parts determined to be defective must be returned to LifeCore to obtain warranty service. You must prepay any shipping charges, export taxes, custom duties and taxes, or any other charges associated with transportation of the parts or product. In addition, you are responsible for insuring any parts or product shipped or returned. You assume the risk of loss during shipment. Any evidence of alteration, erasing or forgery of proof-of-purchase documents will be cause to void this Limited Warranty. This warranty does not extend to any product not purchased from LifeCore or from an authorized LifeCore reseller. This Limited Warranty does not extend to any product that has been damaged or rendered defective; (a) as a result of accident, misuse, or abuse; (b) by the use of parts not manufactured or sold by LifeCore; (c) by modification of the Product or normal wear and tear; (d) operation on incorrect power supplies; or (e) as a result of service by anyone other than LifeCore, or an authorized LifeCore service provider. Product on which the serial number has been defaced or removed is not eligible for warranty service. Should any Product be submitted for warranty service be found ineligible, an estimate of repair cost will be furnished and the repair will be made if requested by you upon receipt of payment or acceptable arrangements for payment. LIFECORE MAKES NO OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OR MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR Page 18
