Before using this equipment, obey the following warnings: Read and understand the complete Owner s Manual. Read and understand all Warnings on this machine. If this machine is being used in a commercial setting, end users may not have access to this Owner s Manual. It is the responsibility of the facility to instruct users as to the proper usage of the equipment, as well as making them aware of potential hazards. Keep children away from this machine. Watch them closely when near the machine. Moving parts that appear dangerous to adults may not appear so to children. Consult a physician before starting an exercise program. Stop exercising if you feel pain or tightness in your chest, become short of breath, or feel faint. Examine this machine for loose parts or signs of wear. Pay special attention to the steps. Contact StairMaster Customer Service for repair information. Us only genuine StairMaster replacement parts. Set up and operate your StepMill on a hard, level surface. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry while exercising. Maximum user weight limit: 275 lbs (125 kg). Do not use if you are over this weight. Stabilize the steps before stepping on them and use caution when stepping off the machine. Keep at least 19 inches (50cm) clear area around the machine. This is the recommended safe distance for access and passage around and emergency dismounts from the machine. Warn bystanders to keep a safe distance, at least 3 ft (1 m). Do not allow anyone to touch the operator while the machine is in motion. Do not over exert yourself during exercise. Do not try to exercise with more resistance than you can physically handle. When you use an electrical appliance, basic precautions must always be followed, including the following: DANGER - To decrease the risk of electric shock always unplug this appliance from the electrical outlet immediately after use and before cleaning. To decrease the risk of burns, fire, electric shock, or injury to persons: An appliance must not be left unattended when plugged in. Unplug from outlet when not in operation, and before you put on or remove parts. Close supervision is necessary when this appliance is used by or near children or disabled persons. Use this appliance only for its intended use as described in this manual. Do not use attachments that are not recommended by the manufacturer. Do not operate this appliance if it has a damaged cord or plug, if it is not working correctly, if it has been dropped or damaged, or fallen into water. 4 Safety Warning Labels Before using your product: Find and read all warning labels located on the StairMaster StepMill 3, prior to using your product. Be sure to replace any warning label if damaged, illegible, or missing. If you need replacement labels, contact StairMaster customer service.

5 Getting Started Note: Throughout this manual, all references to the left or right side and to the front or back are made as if you were on the machine, ready to exercise. Guidelines for getting on and off the StepMill 3 To avoid injury, carefully follow the instructions. 1. Hold on to the handrails, step onto the staircase, stand up straight and the steps will rotate slowly. 2. You should see the CHOOSE WORKOUT GOAL message on the display. 3. Select the QUICK START exercise program so you can control the pace of your first workout and get used to the exercise motion. 4. When you begin to exercise, the steps will rotate indicating the program is starting. 5. As you become comfortable with the exercise motion, press (LEVEL: UP) and (LEVEL: DOWN) to adjust the step rate. 6. Relax, maintain an erect posture, and use handrails for balance. Supporting your weight (on handrails) while exercising decreases the exercise intensity. 7. Before stepping off the StepMill, have the rotating steps come to a complete stop. Then, while holding onto the handrails carefully place one foot on the ground and repeat for the other foot.

6 Operating the Console HEART RATE Current Heart Rate (HR), in Beats Per Minute (BPM), is displayed in the top right corner of the display. User should consult a physician to determine an appropriate Target Heart Rate (THR) in which to exercise, based on age, weight and physical condition. CALORIES Provides a current total of the number of calories burned during a workout. Note: This number is only an approximation as a user s caloric expenditure will vary significantly based on a person s age, gender, weight and metabolism. FLOORS PER MINUTE Displays the step rate in floors per minute (FPM). LEVEL Displays the current level from FLOORS Displays the current number of floors climbed. WATTS During a workout, this statistic displays the power output at the current RPM and intensity level, displayed in watts (749 watts = 1 hp). WORKOUT The dot-matrix area of the display shows the actual course profile of the selected PROFILE exercise program. The taller the column, the higher the step rate and/or METs for that interval. The flashing column shows your current interval.

7 Operating the Console SLEEP MODE The console will enter SLEEP mode after 10 minutes of non-activity. In SLEEP mode there will be no display and the back light will be off. If any console button is pressed or if the console receives a reading from the RPM sensor, then the unit will change from SLEEP mode to IDLE mode. IDLE MODE The console will enter IDLE mode when turned on. The console will also enter IDLE mode after being in SLEEP MODE if any console button is pressed or if the console receives a reading from the RPM sensor. QUICKSTART MODE When in IDLE mode you can begin your workout immediately without having to provide any user information by simply pressing the QUICKSTART key. The default is set for a 20 minute workout and at the end of the workout the speed will decrease to level 1 and continue until the user presses STOP. The step rate may be changed at any time during the workout by pressing the UP or DOWN keys. PROGRAMS MODE In IDLE mode a large arrow will point to the left of the console to indicate that you must press the PROGRAMS key to choose a workout goal. Once the PROGRAMS key is pressed you will enter PROGRAMS mode. Once in PROGRAMS mode you will first have to select your training goal which includes: TIME GOAL Select between minutes Default 20 minutes Select amount of time you want to work out, and workout will continue over 30 time intervals to complete in desired amount of time. CALORIES GOAL Select between calories Default 350 calories Select number of calories to burn during workout. Based on selected level of intensity the console will calculate how long it will take to burn desired number of calories and workout will continue until completion. FLOORS GOAL Select between floors Default 41 floors Select number of floors to climb during workout. Based on selected level of intensity the console will calculate how long it will take to complete desired number of floors and workout will continue until completion. To cycle through the three training goals use the UP or DOWN keys, then press ENTER to select the displayed training goal. Once you select your training goal, you will be prompted to select the specific number of the goal chosen. Use the UP and DOWN arrows to select the specific number, then press the ENTER key. When pressing the UP and DOWN keys if you hold the key down it will first slowly change one number every 1/2 second. If held down for three seconds it will change one number every 1/10 second.

8 Operating the Console You will then be prompted to SELECT WORKOUT PROFILE. Use the UP and DOWN keys to cycle through the different profiles. Once your desired profile is displayed press ENTER. MANUAL: Manually control the step rate while accurately calculating exercise statistics based on your weight. The workout profile is divided into 30 equal intervals within the selected workout time. STEADY: 30 interval workout that includes a warm-up period, then goes to a selected intensity level and remains there for the duration of the workout. Any changes to the level during the workout will alter the remaining intervals in the profile by the same amount. MYSTERY CHALLENGE: 30 interval workout with intensity changes randomly selected and applied to create a unique workout profile every time. Any changes to level during the workout will alter the remaining intervals in the profile by the same amount. BUILD: 30 interval workout that steadily increases intensity over the course of the workout. Any changes to level during the workout will alter the remaining intervals in the profile by the same amount. BELL SHAPED: 30 interval workout that steadily increases intensity for the first half of the workout, then decreases over the second half of the workout. Any changes to level during the workout will alter the remaining intervals in the profile by the same amount. CALORIE BURNER: 30 interval workout for users wanting to increase their aerobic capacity. The changes of intensity in the program are greater than the changes in the FAT BURNER program and are designed specifically to tax the cardio respiratory system. Any changes to speed during workout will change levels for rest of workout. FAT BURNER 30 interval workout with moderate changes in intensity level designed to stimulate fat store assimilation for users on a weight control program. Any changes to speed during workout will change levels for rest of workout. HR ZONE TRAINER (needs to detect HR signal) Allows you to exercise at a selected target heart rate by automatically varying the intensity level (resistance) during the workout. HR INTERVALS (needs to detect HR signal) Based on your HR the unit will automatically vary the intensity level (resistance) during the workout pushing your HR up to a high intensity then returning it to a lower intensity. This is designed to improve your performance (speed, strength, and endurance). Except for the HR programs, after choosing your desired profile you will then be prompted to SET INTENSITY (1-9). Use the UP and DOWN keys to select the desired intensity, then press the ENTER key to begin workout. If you choose one of the two HR programs, you will then be prompted to ENTER AGE (10-100). Use the UP and DOWN keys to select your age, then press the ENTER key to begin workout. HR ZONE TRAINER If HR ZONE TRAINER was chosen, after entering age you will be prompted to SET TARGET HR (50-190). Use the UP and DOWN keys to select the desired target HR, then press the ENTER key to begin workout. HR INTERVALS If HR INTERVALS was chosen, after entering age and target HR you will be prompted to SET REST HR (50-190). Use the UP and DOWN keys to select the desired rest HR, then press the ENTER key to begin workout. After the INTENSITY / TARGET HR / REST HR information is entered, you will be prompted to ENTER WEIGHT ( lbs). Use the UP and DOWN keys to select the desired weight, then press the ENTER key to begin workout.

9 Operating the Console BUTTON SELECTION During console input if any of the following keys are pushed, then the resulting action will occur: QUICKSTART Navigate to QUICKSTART MODE PROGRAMS Navigate to PROGRAMS MODE ENTER Confirm the information or value selected UP/DOWN Increases/decreases value STOP Navigate to IDLE MODE CLEAR/RESET First press clears information, second press navigates to IDLE MODE If there is no value input and confirmation for 1 minute, then console returns to IDLE MODE. PAUSE MODE If user stops pedaling for 5 seconds at any time during the workout (no RPM signal), then the unit enters PAUSE MODE. Console can resume workout if user presses QUICKSTART. PAUSE MODE will also be entered if the stop sensor is triggered. Console can resume workout if user presses QUICKSTART. If the STOP button is pressed or the stop sensor is triggered, then the console will enter into PAUSE MODE. WORKOUT PAUSED will be shown in the display. To resume workout press ENTER. To finish workout press STOP. The PAUSE MODE will show a countdown from 2 minutes. If the 2 minute countdown ends, then WORKOUT RESULTS will be displayed. GOAL ACHIEVED Once your program goal is achieved, GREAT WORKOUT will be displayed in the display and the console will enter COOLDOWN MODE. COOLDOWN MODE During COOLDOWN MODE the segment time will count down from 2 minutes and follow the parameters below: Ending Level Cooldown Level Cooldown Time Level minutes 3 < Level minutes 10 < Level 5 2 minutes During COOLDOWN MODE you can change the level by pressing the UP or DOWN buttons. Pressing STOP will finish the COOLDOWN MODE and results will be shown. HEART RATE MONITORING The pulse grips located on the handlebars allows users to monitor their heart rate at any time just by grasping the sensors for a few seconds until the reading appears on the display. A Polar-compatible HR chest belt (not included) transmits the heart beat signal to the receiver in the display. The display shows the HR in beats per minute and uses the HR value in HR control modes. Pacemaker users should not use a telemetry transmitter without first consulting with their doctor.

10 Maintenance INITIAL SERVICE Upon receiving your machine, use a soft, clean towel to wipe off the dust, which may have accumulated during shipping. Your new machine will require minor assembly. Refer to the Assembly Manual for details. CLEANING Do not use glass cleaners or any other household cleaners on the console. Clean the console daily with a water-dampened cloth and wipe dry after cleaning. Clean the exterior of the machine daily using soap and water or a diluted, non-mineral based household cleaner such as Fantastik. The safety and performance of this product can be maintained only if it is inspected regularly for damage and wear. Pay particular attention to components most susceptible to wear such as steps and lower side covers. Remove any damaged machine from service and replace damaged components immediately. Direct any question regarding maintenance or its function to a qualified StairMaster Technician.

11 Warranty Information STAIRMASTER LIMITED WARRANTY All StairMaster exercise products are warranted to be free from defects in materials and workmanship under the terms of recommended use and warranty coverage. Warranty coverage is valid to the original retail purchaser and is not transferable. Coverage will be calculated from the date of purchase. Original proof of purchase will be required with any associated warranty claim. Products sold or placed in non-recommended user applications will void all warranty coverage set forth by StairMaster. Parts replaced under the terms of this warranty will be warranted for the remainder of the original period only. Coverage Periods StairMaster hereby extends the following limited warranties for the application, components, and time periods indicated; STAIRMASTER STEPMILL 3 User Environment: Residential Light Commercial Frame: Lifetime 10 years Mechanical: 5 years 2 years Electronics: 2 year 1 year Wear Items: 1 year 1 year Labor: 1 year 1 year Service Procedure To order replacement part(s), the original purchaser may contact StairMaster Product Support at (888) When calling, be prepared to provide the serial number. Proof of purchase may be needed in order for StairMaster to verify warranty coverage and issue a Return Materials Authorization (RMA) number. Parts being returned to StairMaster for warranty credit must be shipped prepaid, accompanied by a packing list or tag bearing the RMA number, serial number and customer name. No credit will be issued for parts returned without prior authorization from StairMaster. StairMaster reserves the right to review defective part(s). All costs of shipping defective part(s) to and from StairMaster for inspection shall be borne solely by the original purchaser. Any repair or modification of defective part(s) by anyone other than a StairMaster Technical Representative or Authorized Service Provider will void this warranty. If StairMaster determines, in its sole discretion, that it is impractical to ship defective part(s) to StairMaster, StairMaster may designate, in its sole discretion, a repair facility to inspect and estimate the cost to repair such defective part(s). The cost, if any, of shipping defective part(s) to and from such repair facility and of such estimate shall be borne solely by the original purchaser. Defective part (s) must remain available for inspection until the claim is finalized. Whenever claims are settled, StairMaster reserves the right to be subrogated under any existing insurance policies the claimant may have. Limitations and Exclusions THIS LIMITED WARRANTY ONLY APPLIES TO THE ORIGI- NAL PURCHASER AND DOES NOT APPLY TO EXTREME ENVIORMENTAL DAMAGE, COSMETIC DAMAGE, IMPER- FECTIONS THAT ARE WITHIN DESIGN SPECIFICATION(S) OR THAT DO NOT MATERIALLY ALTER FUNCTIONALITY, OR DAMAGE DUE TO ACTS OF GOD, ACCIDENT, ABUSE, MISUSE, NEGLIGENCE, LACK OF NORMAL MAINTE- NANCE, ABNORMAL SERVICE OR HANDLING THAT DIF- FERS FROM THAT SPECIFIED FOR THIS MODEL, IM- PROPER INSTALLATION OR OPERATION. IN ADDITION, ALTERATION OR MODIFICATION OF THE PRODUCT, OR REPAIR BY ANYONE OTHER THAN A STAIRMASTER TECHNICAL REPRESENTATIVE OR AUTHORIZED SER- VICE PROVIDER WILL VOID THIS WARRANTY. Disclaimer of Warranties; Limitation of Liability THIS WARRANTY IS IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. REPAIR OR RE- PLACEMENT AS PROVIDED ABOVE SHALL BE THE SOLE AND EXCLUSIVE REMEDY AVAILABLE TO THE PUR- CHASER.
