1 10 TOP FITNESS TOOLS 1KETTLEBELLS Pretty much anything you can do with dumbbells, you can do with a kettlebell and even more. They re more compact, easier to store and offer more variety. Because of its compact shape, it also allows you to move easily combine cardio and strength workouts. Not sure what to do with one? Check out the Firm It Up Friday Episode #1: Kettlebells with Fabi. MrBA 3M INI TRAMPOLINE Oh Urban Rebounding classes, how I miss you! Don t like plyometrics? Do them on a mini trampoline - guaranteed to up the fun factor. Obtain the advantages to high impact sports without the impact. My favorite move is simply to get on one and do the twist. Perfect for a quick cardio blast during a writing sprint to get the blood flowing. 2JUMP ROPE It worked for Rocky and it can work for you, too! My favorite cardio class was a 45 minute Jump Rope class in Chicago. I know, crazy right? Jump Rope for 45 minutes? The toughest part about jump ropes is ceiling height and possibly unhappy neighbors down below if you re in an apartment. But that s what garages and the great outdoors were created for. And who says you can bring your own jump rope to the gym or use theirs? Start out small and buy a regular threaded jump rope. Once you become more advanced, move up to weighted jump ropes to give your arms and core a more challenging workout! 4ACTIVITY TRACKER Not only does it track your steps, it also tracks your sleep, which is just as important as diet and exercise. It s the single best way to prevent a sedentary lifestyle. The sheer act of paying attention to your steps in the first place will contribute to a more conscious and deliberate focus on your activity level. The more active you are, the fitter you become. I highly recommend the Garmin Vivofit1. It s an older model but in my opinion, the best model. It never has to be charged - the battery lasts up to 1 year - and the straps are interchangeable in many colors. I have a great comparison review of the Vivofit 1 vs 2 youtu.be/khyot7xuyyw 1

2 5HEART RATE MONITOR If you buy the Garmin Vivofit1, there s an option [which I highly recommend] to purchase it with a heart rate monitor that straps across your chest. You can track how many calories you re actually burning in a workout! It fits easily under your sports bra and works perfectly! I am 100% opposed to optical heart rate monitors that track your heart rate via a wristband, smartwatch or other non-chest strap device. They re highly inaccurate and unreliable. You re always better off with the chest strap and the straps can be easily thrown in the washing machine and dryer. I have an unboxing of the Garmin Vivofit 1 w/chest Strap HRM be/yy_pplfstva 6M USIC PLAYLISTS Whether you re lifting weights, out for a walk or doing some other form of cardio, you re going to want some music. I know there are a lot of people trying to multitask and combining workouts with audiobooks and podcasts but I m actually going to recommend that you do NOT do that. Why? You are there to workout, get your cardio levels up and increase your heart rate. Faster, high tempo music directly correlates to a more intense workout and quicker pace. The opposite also holds true. Slower music or even worse, someone lecturing you, leads to a slower, more casual workout leading to little to no results. In fact, your playlist should include only upbeat, fast tempo tunes. I recommend at least 135 beats per minute [bpm] to keep you in the fat burning zone. WIRELESS HEADPHONES If you ve ever owned a pair of earbuds, you ve probably either been frustrated with losing the soft plastic caps that go on them, having uncomfortable 7ones that hurt your ears, or having them fall out randomly at inopportune times. For that reason, I ve switched over to over the ear headphones. The sound quality is better and they stay in place better. My favorites are Beats Solo Wireless Headphones in Rose Gold, of course, but any over the ear headphones will do. 8SMARTPHONE HOLDER At some point, you re going to want to use both of your hands. There are 2 varieties: the flipbelt style around your waist or the arm band. Either one works but I prefer the flipbelt since I don t like to have a sweaty arm while I m working out. 2

3 STABILITY BALL How do you not have one already! You can sit on it, lay on it, roll around 9on it and do tons of exercises on it. 10 TAPE MEASURE Forget the scale, weight means nothing. And especially forget those newfangled fancy electronic bodyfat scales and handheld devices. They re right up there with optical heart rate monitors. Instead, measure your bust, hips, waist, arms and thighs and track those each month. WHAT TO WEAR Dri-fit. It s changed my life and it will change yours, too. I m from the generation that suffered through wearing illfitting, baggy sweats with drawstrings at the ankles and Flashdance like tops. The term no pain, no gain took on a whole new meaning when you were trying to sweat it out in uncomfortable, non-wicking clothing. Luckily for you, yoga pants are everywhere and useful for pretty much any workout you can think of. CLOTHING RETAILERS I LIKE TJ MAXX You can find lots of great brand-name items from Adidas and Nike here. LULULEHMON Beware, their sizes tend to run small, like itty bitty I have no chest small. Go up at least 2 sizes from what you would normally wear in any other brand. ATHLETA These clothes are much more forgiving and complimentary. Although they cost just as much, if not more, than the Canadian Lululehmon brand. BRICK BETTY The best part of this line is they are all about bright, cheery happy colors. 3
